Novel Sulfated Oligosaccharide DP9 from Marine Algae, Gracilaria lemaneiformis: A Potent Galectin-3 Inhibitor for Pancreatic Cancer Therapy.

Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a histologic marker of pancreatic cancer and a potential therapeutic target. This study aimed to characterize a novel sulfated agarose-derived oligosaccharide (DP9) from marine algae, Gracilaria lemaneiformis, evaluate its Gal-3 inhibitory activity, and investigate its anti-pancreatic cancer mechanisms. Through controlled acid hydrolysis, a series of odd-numbered oligosaccharides (DP3-11) were obtained, in which DP9 showed the strongest Gal-3 inhibition in hemagglutination assays. Structural analysis confirmed DP9's unique composition including an alternating β (1→4)-D-ga

Effects of marine heatwaves on haploid and diploid isomorphic phases from two distant populations of Gracilaria caudata (Gracilariales, Rhodophyta).

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are becoming more common and intense, forcing the physiological limits of marine organisms and causing major ecological impacts throughout the world. This work used a well-studied species of Rhodophyta as a model to understand how different thermal ecotypes and isomorphic life history phases respond to MHWs. The thermal ecotypic populations of Gracilaria caudata in Brazil constitute an adaptive strategy for the species to remain in a wide temperature range. In this study, tetrasporophytes and unfertilized female gametophytes of G. caudata from the Tropical Southwestern

Gracilaria chorda subcritical-water extracts as ameliorant of insulin resistance induced by high-glucose in zebrafish and dexamethasone in L6 myotubes.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Insulin resistance (IR) is a pathological condition in which cells fail to respond normally to insulin. Loss of insulin sensitivity disrupts glucose homeostasis and elevates the risk of developing the metabolic syndrome that includes Type 2 diabetes. This study assesses the effect on subcritical-water extract of Gracilaria chorda (GC) at 210 °C (GCSW210) in IR induction models of high glucose (HG)-induced zebrafish larvae and dexamethasone (DEX)-induced L6 myotubes. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE: The dose of HG and DEX for IR induction in zebrafish larvae and L6 myotubes was 130

Influence of artificial light at night (ALAN) on the growth of two marine macroalgae, Gracilaria coronopifolia and Caulerpa lentillifera, in a tropical system.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) has increased worldwide along urbanised coastlines, yet the effects on marine photoautotrophs remain poorly understood. Macroalgae are habitat-forming species that provide essential ecosystem services in coastal environments and any factor impairing their performance may have far-reaching ecological consequences. This study investigated the effects of ALAN on growth rate, oxygen evolution, and palatability in two tropical macroalgae, Gracilaria coronopifolia (Rhodophyta) and Caulerpa lentillifera (Chlorophyta), from Penang, Malaysia. Samples were maintained und

[Inhibitory effect of Gracilaria lemaneformis (Bory) Weber Bosse on the co-cultured Scrippsiella trochoidea (Stein) Loeblich III under controlled laboratory conditions].

The inhibitory effects of Grcilaria lemaneiformis on the co-cultured Scrippsiella trochoidea were determined under controlled laboratory conditions, and the possible mechanism was studied. Results showed that: (1) in the separating S. trochoiea-G. lemaneormis co-culture system when the initial cell density of C. lemaneaonis was set at 0.5 g x L(-1), the growth of S. trochoidea was obviously inhibited and its maximum cell density and exponential phase were decreased compared with the control; however, the inhibitory effect was not as strong as that in the direct cell-cell contact co-culture. A novel bacterial symbiont in the seaweed Gracilaria tenuistipitata and its promising anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative potential in relation to special secreted metabolites.

Marine macroalgae host compositionally complex microbiomes that constitute an evolutionarily refined, yet largely unexplored source of structurally diverse natural products. Thus, the bioactivities of the algae may be related to those of their associated microorganisms. Here we describe the discovery of strain S.100, an endophytic bacterium isolated from the red alga Gracilaria tenuistipitata and displaying remarkable anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative activities, through a primary screening on ethyl acetate (EtAc), chloroform and n-hexane extracts of its culture. S.100 was taxonomically

A Blend Consisting of Agaran from Seaweed Gracilaria birdiae and Chromium Picolinate Is a Better Antioxidant Agent than These Two Compounds Alone.

A blend refers to the combination of two or more components to achieve properties that are superior to those found in the individual products used for their production. Gracilaria birdiae agaran (SPGb) and chromium picolinate (ChrPic) are both antioxidant agents. However, there is no documentation of blends that incorporate agarans and ChrPic. Hence, the objective of this study was to generate blends containing SPGb and ChrPic that exhibit enhanced antioxidant activity compared to SPGb or ChrPic alone. ChrPic was commercially acquired, while SPGb was extracted from the seaweed. Five blends (B1

Preliminary study on the inhibitory effect of seaweed Gracilaria verrucosa extract on biofilm formation of Candida albicans cultured from the saliva of a smoker.

Background:Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungus that might infect the oral cavity. Increased colony numbers of C. albicans in the mouth can be caused by multiple factors, such as smoking, weakened immune system, antibiotics use and immune-compromised condition. Smoking can increase expression of virulence factors of C. albicans and make it stronger. One virulence factor of C. albicans is biofilm formation. The ability of creating biofilm makes C. albicans more tolerant to commercial antifungal agents. The objective of this preliminary study was to examine the ability of the seaweed G.ve
