In this review, we describe the evidence from which the existence of non-MHC histocompatibility (H) antigens was deduced, the clinical setting of bone marrow transplantation in which they are important targets for T-cell responses, and the current understanding of their molecular identity. We list the peptide epitopes of the human and murine minor H antigens now identified at the molecular level, their MHC restriction molecules and the genes encoding them. Transfusion of blood products is a common lifesaving medical procedure in clinical practice. However, it poses the risk of potential adverse reactions for the recipient. Transfusion-associated graft-versus-host-disease (TA-GVHD) is a rare adverse event, fatal in >90% of cases. TA-GVHD pathophysiology is not completely understood involving two factors: (i) underlying immunosuppression and (ii) human leukocyte antigen compatibility between blood donor and recipient. OBJECTIVES: The International Haemovigilance Network's (IHN) ISTARE database collects surveillance data on all adverse reactions (AR) associated with transfusion of blood and blood components, facilitating the sharing of best practice and benchmarking for improving blood safety and quality. Up to 2012, no publications discussed certain rare AR. The aim of this study is to examine ISTARE data on AR from 2012 to 2016, focusing on hypotensive reactions, post-transfusion purpura (PTP), transfusion-associated graft versus host disease (TA-GvHD), hyperkalemia and hypocalcemia.

Hyperbilirubinemia at neonatal period is one of the major deteriorating factors of the auditory system. If left untreated, it may cause certain cerebral damage. This study aims to evaluate the impact of hyperbilirubinemia on the hearing of neonate. This study was conducted on 35 newborn babies with jaundice (bilirubin more than 20 mg/dL). The case of a 20-year-old man with lymphoblastic lymphoma in leukemic phase succumbing to acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) following intensive chemotherapy and blood transfusions is described. Such a documented association has rarely been reported in the literature. The issue of irradiating blood components prior to transfusion in patients with suspected cell-mediated immunodeficiency receiving intensive chemotherapy is raised and discussed.
