[Efficacy of teicoplanin in 25 cases of severe infections caused by gram-positive cocci].

Teicoplanin was evaluated in 25 severe infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria alone [13], in combination [9], alone then in combination [3], in an open study. Of 22 infections that could be evaluated, there were 18 cures and improvements (81.8%), 2 recurrence and 2 failures. Serum concentrations are unpredictable and steady after 5 days i.v. teicoplanin. Trough and peak concentrations are respectively less than 5 mg/l and less than 20 mg/l in 13 infections and higher in 9, unrelated with success or failure. A trough concentration greater than CMI and kind of infection seem deciding. The c

Frequency of haematogenous periprosthetic joint infection due to bacteraemia caused by gram-positive cocci.

BACKGROUND: Presence of a prosthetic joint entails a life-long risk of haematogenous periprosthetic joint infection (hPJI) during bacteraemia. For bacteraemia with Staphylococcus aureus the hPJI frequency has been described to be up to 40% and for streptococci up to 20%, with large variation among reported frequencies. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the hPJI frequency from bacteraemia with virulent gram-positive cocci in patients with hip and/or knee prosthesis. METHODS: A population and register based approach was used. Through cross-matching of blood cultures positive for virulent gra

Evaluation of direct inoculation of the BD PHOENIX system from positive BACTEC blood cultures for both Gram-positive cocci and Gram-negative rods.

BACKGROUND: Rapid identification (ID) and antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) of the causative micro-organism of bloodstream infections result in earlier targeting of antibiotic therapy. In order to obtain results of ID and AST up to 24 hours earlier, we evaluated the accuracy of direct inoculation of the Phoenix system from positive blood cultures (BACTEC) by using Serum Separator Tubes to harvest bacteria from positive blood cultures. Results were compared to those of standard Phoenix procedure. Discrepancies between the two methods were resolved by using the API system, E-test or microbr

Antimicrobial susceptibility rates in gram-positive catalase-negative cocci from sheep and goat genital microbiota.

Gram-positive catalase-negative cocci (GPCNCs) are significant components of the genital microbiota in sheep and goats. However, characterizing them can be difficult due to overlapping culture features and the limited information on their susceptibility to antibiotics. In this study, 97 foreskin and 13 vaginal swabs were investigated using a culturomic approach. Of 110 animals, 76 (69.09 %) hosted GPCNCs, including strains from Streptococcaceae (37, 33.64 %), Aerococcaceae (30, 27.27 %), Enterococcaceae (6, 5.45 %) and other minor species. With increasing antimicrobial resistance rates in live

[Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Pathogenic Gram-positive Anaerobic Cocci: Data of a University Hospital in Turkey].

Gram-positive anaerobic cocci (GPAC), a large group of anaerobic bacteria, are the members of the normal microbiota that colonizes the skin and mucosal surfaces of the human body. However, in case of a wound or when the host becomes immunocompromised, GPAC can cause invasive and most frequently mixed infections. GPAC are the second most frequently isolated bacteria in anaerobic infections. Although the studies are limited, GPAC have been reported to develop resistance to antimicrobial drugs. The resistance of the pathogens to the antimicrobials and improper therapy can cause poor clinical outc

Virulence arsenal of the most pathogenic species among the Gram-positive anaerobic cocci, Finegoldia magna.

This review focuses on the virulence arsenal of the most pathogenic species among Gram positive anaerobic cocci, Finegoldia magna according to recently published data from 2012 to 2016. Virulence factors like sortase dependent pili and F. magna adhesion factor (FAF) facilitate the start of the infection. Albumin binding protein (PAB) enhances F. magna survival. FAF, subtilisin-like extracellular serine protease (SufA) and superantigen protein L protect the bacteria from factors of innate defense system. SufA, capsule and tissue-destroying enzymes provide a deep penetration or spread of the inf

In vitro activity of daptomycin against Gram-positive cocci: the first multicentre study in Greece.

A total of 10420 Gram-positive cocci (including staphylococci, enterococci and various groups of streptococci) collected from clinically significant specimens in ten Greek hospitals during 2006--2007 were tested for their susceptibility to daptomycin. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by the broth microdilution method. Daptomycin demonstrated very high activity against Enterococcus faecalis (MIC at which 50% of the isolates were inhibited (MIC50) = 1mg/L and MIC at which 90% of the isolates were inhibited (MIC90) = 1.36 mg/L), Enterococcus faecium (MIC50 = 1.36 mg/L and

Activity of linezolid against Gram-positive cocci possessing genes conferring resistance to protein synthesis inhibitors.

Linezolid belongs to a new class of antimicrobials, the oxazolidinones, that act by inhibiting protein synthesis. To detect cross-resistance with other inhibitors of protein synthesis (chloramphenicol, macrolides, lincosamides, streptogramins, aminoglycosides and tetracyclines), the in vitro activity of linezolid was determined against isolates harbouring known genes conferring resistance to these antimicrobials. Comparative inhibitory and bactericidal activities of FCE 22101 against gram-positive cocci and anaerobes in vitro.

The inhibitory activity of penem FCE 22101 was compared with those of imipenem and other relevant antibiotics against over 500 clinical isolates of Gram-positive cocci and anaerobes. The relative bactericidal activities of FCE 22101 and imipenem were compared by a killing curve method. FCE 22101 showed good inhibitory activity against most aerobic Gram-positive cocci although generally less than imipenem. A substantial number of Staphylococcus aureus isolates (43%) were highly susceptible to imipenem (MIC less than 0.0015 mg/l); the mode MIC for FCE 22101 was 0.06 mg/l. Methicillin-resistant S

Bacteriology and antimicrobial susceptibility of gram-positive cocci isolated from pus specimens of orofacial odontogenic infections.

We recently reported the beta-lactamase production and antimicrobial susceptibility of anaerobic gram-negative rods isolated from pus specimens of 93 orofacial odontogenic infections. In this report, we determine the bacteriology and antimicrobial susceptibility of bacteria other than anaerobic gram-negative rods, mainly gram-positive cocci, isolated from the same specimens. Streptococcus constellatus and Peptostreptococcus micros were frequent isolates from all types of infection examined.
