Filifactor alocis: The Newly Discovered Kid on the Block with Special Talents.

Infection-induced periodontal disease has been primarily focused on a small group of periodontal pathogens. A paradigm shift, based on data emerging from the oral microbiome project, now suggests the involvement of as-yet-unculturable and fastidious organisms. Collectively, these studies have demonstrated that there are changes in the periodontal status associated with shifts in the composition of the bacterial community in the periodontal pocket. In addition, it is likely that the emerging new pathogens may play a more significant role in the disease. One of the organisms previously unrecogni

Flavonifractor plautii bacteremia following bacterial translocation from the gut: A case report and literature review.

A 75-year-old male, hospitalized with back pain, remained hospitalized for tests for unexplained colitis, which was diagnosed as inflammatory bowel disease unclassified and treated with antibiotics and prednisolone, resulting in Clostridioides difficile colitis. Therefore, antibiotics were discontinued, and oral metronidazole treatment was initiated; however, as the patient's fever persisted, blood cultures were performed. An anaerobic bottle of blood culture turned positive the following day. Initial Gram staining of the positive blood culture fluid showed negative rods, and restaining detect

[Bifidobacterium scardovii isolated from 2 consecutive urine samples].

Bifidobacterium scardovii species consists of facultative anaerobic gram-positive rods whose growth is stimulated by CO2 and anaerobiosis. Exceptionally it has been associated with infections in humans. An elderly male patient with a urinary tract infection due to B. scardovii and Enterococcus faecalis is presented here; both microorganisms were isolated from two consecutive urine samples. The bacillus did not grow on standard media, but on chocolate agar incubated in CO2 and on supplemented Brucella agar in an anaerobic atmosphere, incubated for 72h at 35°C. Gram staining with abundant irregu

Subgingival microbiota of renal transplant recipients.

Renal transplant patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy may experience periodontal side-effects such as gingival overgrowth. This study evaluated the subgingival microbiota of renal transplant recipients with or without periodontal tissue destruction who may have concurrent gingival enlargement. Subgingival paper point samples taken from the deepest probing sites of 38 subjects (one per patient) were examined using direct microscopy and culture techniques. A complex microflora comprising gram-positive and gram-negative cocci, rods and filaments, fusiforms, curved rods and spirochetes wa

A differential centrifugation protocol and validation criterion for enhancing mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) results in microbial identification using blood culture growth bottles.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) is a widely used tool in clinical microbiology for rapidly identifying microorganisms. This technique can be applied directly on positive blood cultures without the need for its culturing, thereby, reducing the time required for microbiological diagnosis. The present study proposes an innovative identification protocol applied to positive blood culture bottles using MALDI-TOF. We have processed 100 positive blood culture bottles, of which 36 of 37 Gram-negative bacteria (97.3 %) were correctly identified d

Comparison of direct disk diffusion and standard microtitre broth dilution susceptibility testing of blood culture isolates.

Bloodstream infections are life-threatening conditions which require timely initiation of appropriate antimicrobial therapy. The accuracy of direct disk diffusion susceptibility testing of positive blood cultures was investigated, including for the first time beta-lactam/beta-lactam-inhibitor combination antibiotics. Results of direct testing, following the guidelines of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, were compared to standard microtitre broth dilution susceptibility testing of the subcultured isolate on the Merlin MICRONAUT system. Altogether, 758 isolates and 4930 organism/

Bloodstream infections in febrile neutropenic patients: bacterial spectrum and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial infections are the major cause of morbidity and mortality among neutropenic patients. Prompt administration of empiric antimicrobial therapy for febrile neutropenic patients is considered vital. Before putting neutropenic patients on empiric antimicrobial regimens, it is essential to be aware of the spectrum of locally prevalent pathogens and their susceptibility pattern. METHODS: We studied the bacterial spectrum and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of organisms causing bloodstream infections in febrile neutropenic patients in Armed Forces Bone Marrow Transplant Cen

Phenotypical characterization, and antibiotics susceptibility patterns of skin bacteria found in podoconiosis patients in the North West Region of Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis, a non-infectious disease originating from long-term exposure of bare feet to irritant red clay soil is a lifelong, disabling disease with no specific diagnostic tool, classified into 5 stages based on the severity of leg swelling (lymphoedema). Secondary bacterial infections have been suggested to cause acute dermatolymphangioadenitis (ADLA) attacks and drive disease progression. Although the North West Region of Cameroon has a proven history of podoconiosis endemicity, the bacterial composition of lymphoedema due to this condition has not been studied. Thus, this stu

[In-vitro susceptibilites to levofloxacin and various antibacterial agents of 18,639 clinical isolates obtained from 77 centers in 2004].

A total of 18,639 clinical isolates in 19 species collected from 77 centers during 2004 in Japan were tested for their susceptibility to fluoroquinolones (FQs) and other selected antibiotics. The common respiratory pathogens, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis and Haemophilus influenzae showed a high susceptible rate against FQs. The isolation rate of beta lactamase non-producing ampicillin-resistant H. influenzae was approximately three times as large as those of western countries. Most strains of Enterobacteriaceae were also susceptible to FQs. The resist

Antimicrobial activity of doripenem (S-4661): a global surveillance report (2003).

The spectrum of activity and potency of doripenem, a broad-spectrum parenteral carbapenem currently in clinical development, was evaluated using 16 008 clinical bacterial isolates collected as part of an international surveillance project during 2003. Using reference broth microdilution methods, doripenem was found to be highly active against oxacillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci (2705 and 297 isolates, respectively; MIC90s 0.06 mg/L), with a potency greater than that of other carbapenem antibiotics. Against enterococci (1474 isolates), with the excep

Neurologic complications of anthrax: a review of the literature.

A review of the literature suggests that the major neurologic symptom complex of infection by Bacillus anthracis is a fulminant and rapidly fatal hemorrhagic meningoencephalitis and that the reported initial mode of entry can be via the cutaneous or inhalation route. For febrile patients with acute neurologic deterioration with associated findings of dark necrotic pustules on the extremities, gram-positive rods in the cerebrospinal fluid, and multifocal areas of unexplained intracerebral hemorrhage on computed tomographic scans, anthrax should be considered within the differential diagnosis. Mycobacterium wolinskyi Bloodstream Infection Associated With a Central Venous Port: A Case Report.

Mycobacterium wolinskyi is a rapidly growing non-tuberculous Mycobacterium typically associated with surgical wounds or implanted devices. We report an elderly woman with a central venous (CV) port inserted two years earlier for long-term nutritional support after gastric cancer surgery who developed a bloodstream infection caused by M. wolinskyi. Gram staining of the positive blood culture revealed slender filamentous Gram-positive rods, prompting suspicion of rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM). The organism isolated from both blood and port cultures was identified by matrix-assisted laser de

Correlation between thermal sensitivity and microorganisms isolated from deep carious dentin.

The correlation between thermal sensitivity and the microorganisms present in 29 deep carious lesions was studied. The numbers of lactobacilli and total Gram-positive rods in the carious lesions were found to be negatively related to the length of pain triggered by cold and heat stimulants. The presence of Gram-positive cocci and non-black-pigmented Bacteroides were positively associated with both cold and heat sensitivities. Black-pigmented Bacteroides, Streptococcus mutans, and total anaerobic colony counts were positively related to the heat sensitivity. Recovery of Fusobacterium nucleatum,

Ultrastructure of the subgingival microflora in juvenile periodontitis.

The ultrastructure of the subgingival deposits on the root surfaces of teeth affected by juvenile periodontitis was studied on 12 teeth from nine individuals, 15--30 years of age. The deposits consisted of either microbial masses associated with a pellicle, or of a cuticular material almost free of bacteria. Gram-negative rods and filaments were the predominant microorganisms. "Corncob" configurations consisting of filamentous bacteria surrounded by Gram-positive cocci, and "bristle brush" formations comprising corncobs surrounded by long rods were observed in the superficial layer of the plaq
