Granular cell tumors of the esophagus.

An unusual benign multicentric esophageal granular cell tumor (granular cell myoblastoma) associated with 16 other similar tumors in the skin, vulva, breast, and tongue of 1 patient is described. There was a family history of granular cell tumors in the patient's mother; this has not been previously described. The pathologic findings and controversial histogenesis of granular cell tumors are discussed in an effort to delete the erroneous term "myoblastoma" from the radiologist's vocabulary. Granular cell tumors of the esophagus are also specifically reviewed.

Granular cell tumors of the larynx.

Granular cell tumors of the larynx are uncommon lesions. Only 15 were identified at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, New York, during the past 45 years. These tumors produce hoarseness usually and are identified as small keratotic, polypoid, or sessile nodules involving the glottic region (most often posterior glottis, arytenoid, or vocal process). These lesions can usually satisfactorily be treated by endoscopic excision. On histologic examination, pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia is frequently seen and may be misinterpreted as squamous cell carcinoma.

Granular cell tumors of the larynx.

Granular cell tumors of the larynx are relatively uncommon, always benign, and most commonly located in the posterior portion of the larynx. They are easily identified and should be differentiated from other lesions. A possible problem in the differential diagnosis is the presence of pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia, which overlies the granular cell tumor and which may mimic squamous cell carcinoma. Careful histopathologic differentiation is important because the laryngeal granular cell lesion should be managed conservatively, with transoral local excision usually being adequate. The histogen

Metastatic Granular Cell Tumor: A Rare Entity.

Granular cell tumor, which is thought to recapitulate a Schwann cell phenotype, is a very rare neoplasm that belongs to soft tissue tumors. It can be classified as benign, atypical or malignant, based on specific histological criteria, with the majority of cases exhibiting an indolent behavior. Its biology and clinical course are poorly understood and its optimal management is yet to be defined, given the rarity of cases. Here we describe an atypical granular cell tumor in the upper middle back skin that evolved after a thirty-year indolent period. Despite complete surgical removal, the patien

Granular Cell Tumor Initially Masquerading as Cellulitis.

Granular cell tumor (GCT), a rare Schwann cell-derived lesion, typically manifests as a benign skin or soft tissue growth. We report a case of GCT mimicking cellulitis on a woman's foot at first presentation. Despite initial misdiagnosis, histological examination confirmed GCT, guiding successful excision and reconstruction. Our case underscores the importance of considering granular cell tumors in atypical presentations and highlights the role of histological evaluation in accurate diagnosis and management.

Forearm Granular Cell Tumor: A Rare Entity.

Granular cell tumors are uncommon benign masses. They occur rarely and are usually solitary, nontender lesions, with a tendency to occur in the head and neck region and a predilection for the tongue. A malignant variant is even less common. To date, its origin remains uncertain. We report the case of a 19-year-old Egyptian man who presented to the Kasr eini Plastic Surgery Clinic with a swelling on the posterior aspect of his right forearm. After surgical excision and histopathological examination, it was found to be a granular cell tumor. This finding was of interest because of the rarity of

Oculomotor disturbances due to granular cell tumor.

Primary granular cell tumor of the orbit is a rare type of neoplasm. The tumor is frequently associated with extraocular muscles, and eye motility limitation is an unavoidable complication after its surgical removal. The objective of the present article is to review the literature on primary granular cell tumors of the orbit and to report a case of this uncommon neoplasia. Granular cell tumor is a benign lesion encountered in most cases (58.3%) in the inferior aspect of the orbit. Extraocular muscle involvement occurs in 72.2% of the patients, and diplopia is present in 77.1% of the cases. The

Giant granular cell tumor of the vulva.

A 55-year-old lady presented with a large skin colored growth on her vulva since the age of 15 years, which gradually increased to the present state, with the development of a new lesion on her left thigh. There were no systemic symptoms. Biopsy followed by immunohistochemistry showed features consistent with a granular cell tumor.

Granular cell tumor in the ascending colon.

We describe a case of multiple polypoid lesions that occurred in the colon of a 62-year-old man. Eight of the lesions were demonstrated by barium enema, and five were examined histologically. A small nodule in the submucosa of the ascending colon was histologically identical to granular cell tumor, characterized by nested growth of large tumor cells with ample granular cytoplasm and small round nuclei. Immunohistochemically, the cells were positive for S-100, neuron-specific enolase and vimentin, and negative for alpha-smooth muscle actin and desmin.

Granular Cell Tumor of the Ascending Colon.

Granular cell tumor (GCT) was first described by Abrikossoff in 1926. It is a mostly benign tumor with rare malignant transformation. It is defined as a soft tissue neoplasm with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. The mean age of diagnosis for GCT is around 45 years. It is rare for GCT to be found in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Within the subset of GI tract, the colon is an extremely rare site for it to be found. Franburg-Smith histopathology criteria are used to differentiate a benign from a malignant GCT. The malignant form is aggressive with high recurrence rates after resection. Histopa

Retinal granular cell tumor: a case report.

BACKGROUND: To report a rare case of granular cell tumor invading the retina. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old female complained of blurred vision for 2 weeks in her left eye. An irregular-shaped retinal mass in the inferonasal and extending to the optic disc accompanied by dense exudation and extensive serous retinal detachment was observed. Several intravitreal bevacizumab injections were ineffective for stabilizing retinal exudation and intraocular pressure (IOP). Vitrectomy was performed to re-attach the retina and obtain a tumor biopsy specimen. Histopathological analysis revealed that t

Granular cell tumor of the urinary bladder.

A 67-year-old Korean man presented with gross, painless hematuria that had lasted for the previous 2 months. Cystoscopy showed a semispherical tumor approximately 1 cm in diameter that was covered with normal bladder mucosa and extended from the bladder neck to the posterior wall of the bladder. The patient underwent transurethral resection of the tumor. Histological examination and immunohistochemical staining showed a granular cell tumor (GCT). There were no features suggesting a malignant phenotype. On follow-up, the patient has remained free of bladder recurrence. We herein report this cas

Granular cell tumor mimicking a subglottic hemangioma.

Pediatric airway tumors are uncommon. A 4-year-old girl with history of stridor since the first year of life underwent rigid laryngotracheal endoscopy revealing a left posterolateral subglottic mass occluding 80% of lumen. Complete tumor resection by open approach was undertaken. Histopathologic and immunohistochemical studies revealed granular cells tumor. The similarity of the clinical and endoscopic presentation of this tumor to the much more frequent subglottic hemangioma that usually requires a different therapeutic approach was of interest. Granular cell tumor must be considered in the d

Recurrent granular cell tumor: how to treat.

Granular cell tumor is an uncommon lesion usually located in the head and neck region (50%) with a female sex predominance. It is believed to be of primitive neuroectodermal origin. Typical clinical presentation is a small, uninflamed, slowly growing, yellowish mass approximately 2 cm in diameter. Granular cell tumor has a peculiar clinical behavior ranging from clearly benign, locally aggressive, or manifestly malignant. Treatment is surgical excision, but recurrences are possible. In this article, we present a case of recurrent benign granular cell tumor with the discussion of the treatment

Symptomatic granular cell tumor of the neurohypophysis.

Symptomatic granular cell tumors of the neurohypophysis or infundibulum are very rare neoplasms which are difficult to diagnose before operation. We report a case of symptomatic granular cell tumor of the neurohypophysis in a 36-year-old woman who had suffered from amenorrhea and general malaise for more than 1 year. No definite visual or neurological deficit was found. Laboratory examination revealed hyperprolactinemia and decrease of other pituitary hormones. T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an isointense sellar mass with suprasellar extension. Transsphenoidal subtotal t

Granular cell tumor with cirrhosis and transplantation.

Granular cell tumor is a rare cause of hepatic dysfunction. We report here on a patient who underwent liver transplantation for this ailment. In our literature review, the common bile duct was most commonly involved (56%). A wide variety of therapies were advanced for this type of lesion, spanning three decades of care. Twenty-eight patients (49%) had no follow-up reported, and another 2 (3%) were found at autopsy. Sixteen patients (28%) were followed more than 1 year, with 72% followed less than 1 year if at all. We present the first case of a granular cell tumor being treated with liver tran
