Laryngeal granuloma development can be a postoperative complication of laryngeal trauma or irritation resulting from general anesthesia and endotracheal intubation. These rare benign lesions are located primarily over the cartilaginous portions of the larynx, particularly the vocal processes of the arytenoids. Airway manipulation during the intubation process and prolonged intubation periods can be contributing factors to intubation-related laryngeal granulomas, which may manifest 1 to 4 months after intubation. The patient in this case was a female who returned with complaints of throat pain

Intubation laryngeal granulomas (ILGs) are a well-known complication of endotracheal intubation. Cases other than ILGs can be categorized as unspecified laryngeal granulomas (ULGs) since their etiologies are often difficult to confirm. We intended to clarify clinical features of both ILGs and ULGs and that anticoagulant medication could cause the formation and delayed healing of ILGs in terms of wound-healing delay. We compared the results of our treatment of ILGs (n = 16) and ULGs (n = 47) treated between 1998 and 2009 to characterize these patients. The clinical course, treatment (medical vs

Vocal process granuloma (VPG) is a common benign inflammatory lesion of the posterior glottis, typically induced by intubation injury, laryngopharyngeal reflux, or vocal abuse. Clinicians usually make an initial clinical impression of VPG merely through laryngoscopy, and routine biopsy is generally not performed. However, malignant lesions arising at the vocal process may appear highly similar to laryngeal granulomas under flexible laryngoscopy. We present two patients with a history of tracheal intubation. Their granuloma-like lesions were initially regarded as benign VPG, while postoperative

In order to evaluate the long-term outcome of contact granuloma a follow-up study of 59 patients was conducted. Primary treatment consisted mainly of voice therapy or of voice therapy in combination with surgery. A careful history was taken and the patients were examined using videolaryngoscopy. The average follow-up time was 12 years (range 5-20 years). In total, 10 out of 59 patients (17%) had a granuloma at the follow-up examination, 6 of them presenting without subjective symptoms. Another 28 patients had various signs of inflammation of the posterior glottis. The history taken at follow-u

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to determine the frequency of intubation-related laryngeal granulomas (ILGs) after surgery under general anesthesia and identify risk factors, with a focus on tube type and duration.
METHODS: A single-center prospective cohort (November 2012-September 2013) of adults undergoing elective surgery expected to last at least 5 h with intubation was conducted. Fiberoptic laryngoscopy was performed on the day after extubation and at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months. Candidate variables included tube type (single lumen vs. double lumen [DLT]), intubation duration, Cormack-

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The microdebrider has become a valuable instrument for otolaryngologists. It is now used in the larynx for treatment of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, laryngeal stenosis, and debridement of large cancers for airway control. There are few reported complications reported with the use of the microdebrider in the larynx.
STUDY DESIGN: A case report.
METHODS: A patient with a vocal fold polyp underwent removal of the polyp with a microdebrider at an outside institution. He presented to our clinic 2 months after the excision with a severely strained near aphonic voice

Laryngeal granulomas are benign lesions located in the posterior third of the glottis, mainly at the level of the vocal apophysis of the arytenoid cartilage. They are typically associated with three etiological factors: endotracheal intubation, inappropriate voice use and/or gastroesophageal reflux. The formation of a post-intubation laryngeal granuloma is a late complication related to intubation injury. It is uncommon in the child, especially if the period of intubation is short. It is usually unilateral and produces dysphonia, pharyngeal foreign body sensation and cough. Treatment consists

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to elucidate the mechanisms underlying laryngeal granuloma formation in a rat model of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with mechanically injured vocal cord mucosa.
METHODS: The rat model of GERD was surgically created by tying the pyloric sphincter and ligating the transitional region between the forestomach and the glandular portion (limiting ridge). The control rats received only a midline incision. In all the animals, a plastic bar was inserted into the trachea, and moved vertically thrice in 3 seconds to cause mechanical injury of the vocal cord

A 65-year-old female who received laryngeal injections with polytef (Teflon) paste for treatment of right vocal cord paralysis first noticed a small, right anterior neck mass 17 months later. Clinically this mass slowly progressed in size and was felt to be a recurrent carotid body tumor, but at surgery, 22 months after injection, a circumscribed nodule on the anterior right lobe of the thyroid was found and histologically diagnosed as a foreign body granuloma. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive x-ray analysis (EDXA) of material in this lesion was identical to that of pol

OBJECTIVE: Laryngeal contact granuloma (LCG) is a relatively uncommon disease with chronic inflammatory stimulation, and long-term reflux irritation is a vital factor for arytenoid cartilage calcification. Our investigation compared the severity of ipsilateral arytenoid cartilage calcification with the frequency of recurrence of LCG after surgical treatment.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of prospectively gathered data over five years from 327 patients, including 153 subjects without laryngeal lesions, were age- and sex-matched normal controls, 103 patients with various other vocal cor

Laryngeal granuloma is an uncommon complication of prolonged endotracheal intubation. A 25-year-old woman with severe jaw deformity underwent sagittal split ramus osteotomy under general anesthesia. Two days after extubation, the patient complained of hoarseness, sore throat, and dyspnea. When symptoms persisted, she was evaluated in the Otolaryngology Department. She was diagnosed with laryngeal granuloma of the bilateral arytenoid cartilages, and conservative treatment was selected. Administration of corticosteroid hormones, proton pump inhibitors, and a subsequent follow-up examination perf
