Plasma cell granuloma (PCG) is characterized by proliferation of polyclonal plasma cells with associated fibrosis and is often considered part of the heterogeneous group of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs). The thyroid is rarely affected by PCG. A patient having PCG associated with Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) prompted our literature search that revealed 18 cases of PCG, 55% (n = 10) of which occurred together with HT. The etiopathogenesis of PCG is unknown and there is no specific treatment except surgical excision for compressive symptoms. This entity has an excellent prognosis with

Plasma cell granuloma of the larynx is a rare benign lesion of unknown etiology, with only 21 cases reported previously. We report an additional case of plasma cell granuloma in which a 26-year-old man experienced a 1.5 × 3.4-cm, completely obstructing subglottic lesion. Because of the patient's young age, history of hemoptysis, bleeding from his tracheostomy, and the rarity of plasma cell granulomas, the patient was assumed to have hemangioma until proven otherwise. He presented with a partially obstructing glottic lesion 4 months later. Both the subglottic and glottic lesions were excised en

A 77-year-old man showed an asymptomatic meningeal lesion beneath the dura matter in the left fronto-parietal region on MRI during an examination for recurrent hoarsness. The lesion showed no gadolinium enhancement, and extended to neither the sulci nor skull. Neurological examinations revealed hoarseness, cochlear and vestibular dysfunction of the right ear, and mildly decreased Achilles tendon reflexes bilaterally. Laboratory findings showed marked inflammatory responses, but no abnormalities for LDH, IgG4, angiotensin-converting enzyme, or soluble IL-2 receptor. There was no serum monoclona

Plasma cell granulomas (inflammatory pseudotumors) frequently appear as localized benign tumors of the lung in patients under 30 years of age. We describe the case of a 54-year-old woman with a plasma cell granuloma originating in the left lower lobe of lung and extending into the posterior mediastinum with destruction of the T8 vertebral body and pedicle. Distinctive histologic features included granulomatous aggregation of mature plasma cells around small blood vessels and direct invasion of the posterior mediastinum with subsequent dense fibrosis and bony destruction. Immunohistochemical st

This study reports a case of plasma cell granuloma of the thyroid gland in a 47-year-old woman, presenting with a right subhyoid mass and a previous diagnosis of Hashimoto thyroiditis dating back to 1988, which was made on a subtotal thyroidectomy. Plasma cell granuloma preferentially involves the lung, with only 18 cases of thyroid gland involvement having been reported to date in the English literature. Thyroid plasma cell granuloma preferentially affects women and classically shows a prominent plasma cell infiltrate embedded in a variable degree of fibrous stroma: only 2 of the reported cas

A rare case of concurrent plasma cell granulomas (PCG) of the lung and the central nervous system (CNS) is reported. A 30-year-old man was presented with recurrent left headaches lasting for two years. Computerized tomographic (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head disclosed a process extending from the lateral aspect of the left cavernous sinus to the tentorium cerebelli and the infratemporal fossa through the foramen ovale. At the same time, chest-X ray and CT scan showed three symptomless masses of the pulmonary right lower lobe. Histological examination of cerebral samp

A 12-year old boy had a five-year course of dysphagia secondary to lower esophageal obstruction by a posterior mediastinal extension of an inflammatory pseudotumor of the lung. The case illustrates the capacity of pseudotumor to behave in a locally aggressive manner and to present in extrapulmonic sites.

Plasma cell granuloma (xanthomatous pseudotumor) is polymorphic at light as well as electron microscopic examination. At light microscopy the endobronchial variant of this entity was rich in plasma cells and interwoven, whorl-like, or concentrically arranged spindle cells. Foamy histiocytes and macrophages usually abundant in the intrapulmonary variant were rare. At electron microscopy particles 20 to 50 nm. in size were found at the bronchial mucosal surface but not elsewhere in the lesion. Plasma cells near the bronchial surface contained cytoplasmic fibrils, mitochondria with concentric cri

Plasma cell granuloma is a rare benign lesion characterized by the infiltration of plasma cells; primarily occurring in the lungs. It is also seen to occur in the brain, kidney stomach, heart, and so on but its intraoral occurrence is a rarity. This case report represents one of the uncommon locations in the oral cavity affected by plasma cell granuloma, its clinical and histological features, and establishes the differential diagnosis with other malignant or benign disease entities and planning the treatment accordingly. This report discusses the diagnostic enigma and the associated terminolo

A 46-year-old man was admitted with complaints of fever, cough and anterior chest pain. Chest X-ray examination disclosed an infiltrative shadow in the right upper lung field and chest CT scan strongly suggested invasion of mediastinum and anterior chest wall. Therefore, steroid therapy was selected because biopsy specimen showed proliferation of fibroblasts and mononuclear cells mainly containing plasma cells with no evidence of malignancy. After steroid therapy, chest X-ray examination showed that the infiltrative shadow was greatly reduced. However, since infiltrative shadow was increased a

Background: Plasma cell granuloma is generally considered a pseudotumor formed by reactive, polyclonal plasma cells. Although most cases can show polyclonal gammaglobulin production, quite a minority may exhibit monoclonal gammopathy, which mimics plasma cell neoplasms such as multiple myeloma or plasmacytoma. Because of this overlap, distinguishing reactive monoclonal proliferation from true malignancy is clinically essential. Case report: A 79-year-old man was presented with an anterior chest wall mass that had grown during investigation for fever of unknown origin. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose po

Drug-induced gingival overgrowth (DIGO) can be a serious concern for both patients and clinicians. DIGO is a well-documented side-effect of some pharmacologic agents, including, but not limited to, calcium channel blockers, phenytoin, and cyclosporine. Plasma cell granulomas (pseudotumors) are exceedingly rare, non-neoplastic, reactive tumor-like proliferation, primarily composed of plasma cells that manifest primarily in the lungs, but may occur in various anatomic locations. Intraoral plasma cell granulomas involving the lip, oral mucosa, tongue, and gingiva have been reported in the past. T

BACKGROUND: Granuloma of the upper aerodigestive tract is a rare presentation of immunoglobulin-G4 (IgG4)-related disease. Since the disease process was defined in 2003, only 2 cases affecting the laryngopharynx have been reported in the literature.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 62-year-old white man presented with persistent productive cough of brown sputum, globus symptoms, dysphagia, odynophagia, dysphonia, otalgia, and general malaise over a period of 2 months. Investigations revealed IgG4-positive plasma cell granuloma of the supraglottic region. This was successfully treated with oral corticos

A child had a pulmonary plasma cell granuloma/fibrous histiocytoma that recurred after lobectomy in 1952 and required pneumonectomy in 1953, at which time it extended into the mediastinum at the pulmonary hilus. A metastatic nodule was removed from within the diaphragmatic musculature. The long-term favorable outcome suggests a good prognosis after adequate surgical therapy. The possible relationship of fibrous histiocytoma/plasma cell granuloma to modified measles is discussed.

BACKGROUND: Plasma-cell granulomas, which are characterized by the non-neoplastic proliferation of plasma cells, are primarily found in the lungs and upper respiratory tracts, and are extremely rare in the central nervous system.
METHODS: An intracranial tumor of an 11-year-old boy was evaluated by histologic and radiologic examination.
RESULTS: An 11-year-old boy had a 2-month history of mild headache and nausea. A computed tomography scan showed a round, slightly high-density mass surrounded by marked edema in the left frontal lobe. On magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the mass had a sligh

The authors report a case of inflammatory plasma cell pseudo-tumor in the lung associated with mediastino-pulmonary sarcoid histological lesions. Diffusion of the latter to pulmonary parenchyma, the intensity of the follicular reaction in mediastinal lymph nodes together with a positive Kveim test suggest the fortuitous association of a mediastinal-pulmonary sarcoidosis with a plasma cell granuloma.
