A rare case of granulomatous mastitis by Brucella species.

Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a rare, chronic, benign inflammatory disease of the breast. Here, we present a rare case of GM caused by brucellosis and present the first review to compile the cases in the literature. The diagnosis was confirmed by the patient's serological and histopathological results. The patient was successfully treated with doxycycline+rifampicin combination therapy for six weeks. In conclusion, infectious agents, especially brucellosis, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of GM in endemic regions. Diagnostic methods, such as tissue culture and serological t

Diagnosis of Idiopathic Granulomatous Mastitis in a Sudanese Woman.

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a relatively rare specific chronic inflammatory process of unknown etiology, that diagnostically overlaps with common breast pathologies in Sudan, namely breast cancer (BC) and tuberculous mastitis (TBM). We report the case of a 34-year-old female who presented with a 1-month history of a painful lump in the lower outer quadrant of her left breast. A tru-cut biopsy showed features of granulomatous inflammation suggestive of IGM. Four months later, she presented with similar features and fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) confirmed the presence of

A case of granulomatous mastitis with erythema nodosum and arthritis.

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis is an inflammatory mass in the breast. Patients typically present with a firm breast mass, often associated with inflammation of the overlying skin. Nipple retraction, peau d'orange-like changes, and axillary adenopathy may be present. We describe a 23-year-old pregnant woman with arthritis, erythema nodosum, and mastitis.

Feasibility of surgical management in patients with granulomatous mastitis.

Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a rare inflammatory breast disease of unknown etiology. Although it usually presents with sinus formation and abscesses, it may mimic the clinical characteristics of breast cancer. The aim of this study was to identify the clinical, radiologic, and pathologic characteristics of patients with GM and to show the results of surgical treatment in these patients. A chart review was performed for patients that were treated with a diagnosis of GM at the Breast Unit, Department of Surgery, Istanbul Medical Faculty, University of Istanbul, between September 1998 and Janua

Granulomatous mastitis as presenting sign of Wegener's granulomatosis.

A case where a breast tumor was the initial manifestation of Wegener's granulomatosis is presented. Breast biopsy revealed granulomatous mastitis, and treatment with tuberculostatic drugs was started. Following an initial improvement the patient finally died. Postmortem, the diagnosis of generalised Wegener's granulomatosis was made. Although Wegener's granulomatosis is a very rare cause of granulomatous mastitis, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis. A brief outline of the literature is given.

Granulomatous mastitis--a rare cause of erythema nodosum.

Granulomatous mastitis is a recently described, rare condition of unknown aetiology. It occurs in young, parous women as a tender extra-areolar breast lump and therefore needs to be differentiated from carcinoma. Histologically, a discrete granulomatous lobulitis is seen and because of morphological similarities to granulomatous thyroiditis it has been suggested it may be immunologically mediated. We present a patient in whom granulomatous mastitis presented with periarthritis and erythema nodosum, an association not previously described.

Granulomatous Mastitis Occurring during Pregnancy: A Case Report.

Background and Objectives: Granulomatous mastitis is a benign disease with a clinical presentation similar to that of breast cancer, and is most commonly observed in women of childbearing age. Although it has been suggested that autoimmune diseases are involved in its pathogenesis, no specific treatments have been established. The occurrence of this disease during pregnancy has rarely been reported. We presented the case of a 37-year-old woman who complained of left breast induration at 24 weeks' gestation. Materials and Methods: She was pregnant and manifested a dichorionic, diamniotic placen

Idiopathic Granulomatous Mastitis: Is It Still a Mysterious Entity?

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is stereotypically described as a rare, mysterious breast disorder that is difficult to diagnose and treat. Initial literature about IGM consisted of case reports and retrospective case series. Understandably, this led to arbitrary, and occasionally contradictory, surgical and medical treatment approaches. Over the last two decades, IGM has markedly departed from its classical description. It is no longer that rare disease and the spectrum of clinical presentation has widely expanded, both locally and systematically. In addition, a relatively good number

Concurrent Granulomatous Mastitis and Ductal Carcinoma In Situ.

Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a benign inflammatory breast disease that often poses diagnostic challenges due to its similar clinical and radiographic features to breast cancer. We report the case of a 34-year-old female with concurrent GM and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Initially, breast cancer was suspected based on imaging; however, a needle biopsy confirmed GM. Corticosteroid treatment led to a reduction in tumor size, but subsequent imaging continued to suggest the presence of breast cancer. Surgical excision ultimately revealed the coexistence of GM and DCIS. It is essential to con

What predicts the recurrence in ıdiopathic granulomatous mastitis?

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rarely seen chronic and benign disease of the breast. IGM usually emerges in women between 30 and 45 years of age and within the first 5 years after lactation. There is no consensus on the treatment of the disease. Steroids, immunosuppressive agents such as methotrexate and azathioprine, antibiotics, and surgical and conservative treatments can be preferred. In the present study, it was aimed to demonstrate the treatment options and follow-up data of the patients with IGM and to investigate the effective factors on recurrence if develo

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis with erythema nodosum and polyarthritis.

A 25 year-old woman presented with a painful mass in the left breast, polyarthritis and erythema nodosum. Fine needle aspiration cytology led to a diagnosis of granulomatous mastitis. Oral prednisolone rapidly improved the arthritis and the erythema nodosum. Granulomatous mastitis is a very rare, chronic inflammatory disease and only ten patients with granulomatous mastitis with erythema nodosum and polyarthitis have been described.

Granulomatous mastitis caused by sparganum. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Sparganosis is not a common disease, and its rarity makes it difficult to distinguish from others. Close examination of fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) samples, however, can aid in histologic examination of the lesion. CASE: A 64-year-old female, born and raised in a rural area in the state of Goiás, Brazil, presented with a relatively mobile and hard lump in the lower inner quadrant of the right breast. It was initially diagnosed as granulomatous mastitis, but cytologic examination of the surgical specimen revealed a sparganum larva, also revealed by anterior FNAB. CONCLUSI

Risk factors for idiopathic granulomatous mastitis: scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare, benign, inflammatory breast condition. The diagnostic challenge can cause delays in diagnosis and treatment. The quality of evidence for the diagnosis and management of IGM is low. A scoping review of existing literature was conducted to determine risk factors for IGM, with the aim of informing clinical suspicion, earlier diagnosis, and treatment of this condition. METHODS: A scoping review of the MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases (2003-2023) was performed following PRISMA-ScR

Five-year follow-up of idiopathic granulomatous mastitis.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a benign and rare chronic inflammatory disease of the breast. Although there are various treatment modalities, an ideal treatment algorithm has not been defined. AIMS: We designed this study to evaluate the clinical status, duration of remission, remission rates, and treatment algorithm in patients with IGM during a 5-year follow-up period after immunosuppressive therapy. METHODS: This study was planned retrospectively in the rheumatology outpatient clinic including 63 patients with biopsy-proven IGM. Demographic characteristics, clinica

Effect of Steroids on Granulomatous and Non-granulomatous Mastitis: A Case Series of 12 Patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a rare, chronic inflammatory breast condition characterized by granulomatous changes around the lobules and ducts, typically presenting as a unilateral, tender, swollen, and erythematous breast. First described in 1972, its exact cause remains unclear, and there is no standardized first-line treatment. Corticosteroids are commonly used with generally positive outcomes, though they carry risks of side effects and relapse. In a case series of 12 patients with GM-like symptoms, six were confirmed histologically, and all showed improvement w

Cystic neutrophilic granulomatous mastitis: radiologic features and clinical management.

BACKGROUND: Cystic neutrophilic granulomatous mastitis is a rare benign breast inflammatory disease often associated with Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii. Its clinical and radiologic features frequently mimic breast carcinoma, leading to diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a North African 41-year-old woman with pituitary insufficiency who developed a painless, enlarging breast mass. Multimodality imaging (ultrasound, mammography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging) all suggested malignancy, with magnetic resonance imaging classified as Breast Ima
