Light mowing supports fine-root production in a temperate saline-alkaline grassland soil.

The dynamic changes and differential responses of roots - an important research hotspot in belowground ecology-are one of the most fascinating yet elusive focuses in terrestrial ecology. We conducted a two-year field experiment in a temperate saline-alkaline grassland soil of northern China to generalize the effects of mowing intensity on root production, mortality, standing crop, turnover, and lifespan. Four mowing intensities were established, including no mowing, light mowing, moderate mowing, and heavy mowing. Fine root dynamics were monitored in situ using the root-window method at 15-day

Mixed Cropping Improves Soil Fertility via Enhancing Plant Facilitation in Alpine Artificial Grassland.

By enhancing plant complementarity and facilitation, mixed cropping may accelerate soil fertility recovery and improve grassland ecosystem resilience. Nevertheless, the impacts of mixed cropping on soil fertility over a single growing season, and the underlying plant-soil interaction mechanisms, remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that mixed grass-legume-moss sowing would increase above- and belowground biomass, aggregate stability (mean weight diameter), and soil organic carbon and total nitrogen relative to monocultures, partly through relief of the nitrogen limitation of the grass by

The Anthelmintic Ingredient Moxidectin Negatively Affects Seed Germination of Three Temperate Grassland Species.

In animal farming, anthelmintics are regularly applied to control gastrointestinal nematodes. There is plenty of evidence that also non-target organisms, such as dung beetles, are negatively affected by residues of anthelmintics in faeces of domestic ungulates. By contrast, knowledge about possible effects on wild plants is scarce. To bridge this gap of knowledge, we tested for effects of the common anthelmintic formulation Cydectin and its active ingredient moxidectin on seed germination. We conducted a feeding experiment with sheep and germination experiments in a climate chamber. Three wide

Direct and Trait-Mediated Effects of Climate on Grassland Productivity Across the Alps.

Understanding how climate shapes ecosystem productivity through energetic constraints and changes in the functional properties expressed by vegetation remains challenging. This is central to trait-based biodiversity-ecosystem functioning research in mountain grasslands where warming and environmental gradients interact. Here, we distinguish direct climatic controls on productivity from indirect pathways operating through changes in canopy functional composition, physiological state, and within-plot spectral functional heterogeneity across the European Alps. Using Sentinel-2 time series (2017-2

Global grassland productivity and carbon storage benefit from functional diversity under climate change.

Functional diversity plays an important role for ecosystem services of managed grasslands such as their gross primary productivity (GPP) and soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks. Yet vegetation models assessing functional diversity have been limited to small spatial scales. We used the Lund-Potsdam-Jena managed land (LPJmL) competitor stress-tolerant ruderal (CSR) model to assess the role of functional diversity for managed grassland GPP and SOC under climate change at the global scale. LPJmL-CSR simulates functional diversity using plant functional types representing different ecological strategi

Temporal effects of grassland enclosure on root growth and glomalin-mediated carbon sequestration.

Enclosure is one of the key measures for restoring degraded grasslands. The enhancement of carbon sequestration after grassland restoration is directly related to the improvement of regional ecological quality and the achievement of carbon neutrality goals. We conducted an in-situ root growth experiment lasting for four years (6, 12, 24, and 48 months) using the internal growth core method across natural grassland and grasslands with different closure durations (5, 10, 25, and 30 years) in Yunwushan National Nature Reserve. We explored the duration effect on root growth and globulin-related so

Disentangling production and persistence of extracellular virions in grassland soils with SIP-viromics.

Viruses are abundant and ecologically important in soils, yet the persistence and production dynamics of extracellular virions remain poorly understood. We applied genome-resolved stable isotope probing viromics (SIP-viromics), combining H218O labeling with viral metagenomics, to track virion turnover in seasonally dry grassland soils following rewetting. We identified 354 viral populations (vOTUs) using individual-sample and combined virome assemblies. Only 22% of vOTUs exhibited significant 18O enrichment, indicating active replication and new virion production during the 1-week incubation;

Excess Precipitation in Early Growing Season Increases Pathogen Pressure in Semiarid Grassland Ecosystem.

Rodents are important reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens, and the Capillaria hepatica they carry pose a potential threat to public health in grassland ecosystems. Climate-driven changes in precipitation show complex effects on disease ecology, particularly in steppe grasslands where extreme weather events are becoming increasingly frequent. Here, to investigate the effects of precipitation patterns on the epidemic dynamics of C. hepatica in host populations, we conducted a 7-year manipulation experiment in twelve 0.48-ha field enclosures in semiarid steppe grassland. We found that rainfall incre

Impact of Sylvatic Plague Vaccine on Non-target Small Rodents in Grassland Ecosystems.

Oral vaccination is an emerging management strategy to reduce the prevalence of high impact infectious diseases within wild animal populations. Plague is a flea-borne zoonosis of rodents that often decimates prairie dog (Cynomys spp.) colonies in the western USA. Recently, an oral sylvatic plague vaccine (SPV) was developed to protect prairie dogs from plague and aid recovery of the endangered black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes). Although oral vaccination programs are targeted toward specific species, field distribution of vaccine-laden baits can result in vaccine uptake by non-target anima

Litter Mixing Effects Modulate UV-Induced Photodegradation Across Grasslands.

UV radiation can strongly affect litter decomposition across broad climatic gradients, but the magnitude of its contribution differs among ecosystems. Current understanding of this process remains largely based on single-species litter experiments, which overlook the compositional complexity of natural litter inputs and the potential role of litter mixing in modulating UV-driven photodegradation. To address this gap, we conducted a mixed-litter decomposition experiment within a UV-manipulation network across a 25° latitudinal gradient spanning four grassland types in China. Using biomass-weigh

Herbivory disrupts invasion-associated phyllosphere and arthropod community shifts in grasslands.

Biological invasions and changing herbivore communities can jointly reshape grassland ecosystems by altering vegetation structure, microclimate, microbial communities, and trophic interactions. We examined these effects in temperate Australian grassy woodlands dominated by kangaroo grass (Themeda triandra) and invaded by African lovegrass (Eragrostis curvula). Across six livestock-grazed farms, we established nested herbivore-exclusion treatments (open, livestock excluded, and all mammals excluded) in paired subsites dominated by kangaroo grass or co-dominated by African lovegrass. We measured

Plant diversity modifies multi-trophic interactions in croplands, grasslands and forests.

Multitrophic interactions can strongly influence the structure and functioning of ecosystems, but how plant diversity influences the direction and predictability of multitrophic interactions across agricultural and natural ecosystems remains unclear. Using 149 field studies across five continents, we found that, on average, increasing plant diversity tended to exert differential top-down and bottom-up effects in croplands versus grasslands and forests. Organic and nonorganic croplands exhibited 846 and 148% higher invertebrate natural enemy-to-herbivore abundance ratios under increased plant d

Flowering Phenological Patterns of Entomophilous Plants in an Alpine Grassland of the Qilian Mountains.

Flowering phenology is a critical life-history trait determining the reproductive success of entomophilous plants in alpine ecosystems. However, comprehensive characterizations and cross-level comparative studies of these phenological patterns remains limited. In this study, we conducted high-frequency phenological monitoring of 36 entomophilous species across 15 families in a typical alpine grassland in the Qilian Mountains, extracting parameters at the individual, population, functional group, and community levels. Our results demonstrate that the community flowering season lasted approximat

Climate change reduces the net sink of CH4 and N2O in a semiarid grassland.

Atmospheric concentrations of methane (CH4 ) and nitrous oxide (N2 O) have increased over the last 150 years because of human activity. Soils are important sources and sinks of both potent greenhouse gases where their production and consumption are largely regulated by biological processes. Climate change could alter these processes thereby affecting both rate and direction of their exchange with the atmosphere. We examined how a rise in atmospheric CO2 and temperature affected CH4 and N2 O fluxes in a well-drained upland soil (volumetric water content ranging between 6% and 23%) in a semiarid

Reciprocal transport of carbon and nitrogen between plants and the hyphosphere microbiome in a temperate grassland.

Despite its relevance for plant nutrient acquisition, the role of the hyphosphere in structuring fungal-bacterial networks and mediating carbon-nitrogen (C-N) exchange under field conditions remains unclear. We therefore examined reciprocal C-N fluxes along the plant-fungi-bacteria continuum and their link to microbial community assembly across grassland soil microhabitats. Sterilized compartmentalized ingrowth cores were exposed to soil in the field for 3 months. Plants were pulse-labeled with 13CO2 and 13C was traced into microbial biomarkers over 7 d. 15N-labeled urea was supplied to a hyph

Plague bacterium as a transformer species in prairie dogs and the grasslands of western North America.

Invasive transformer species change the character, condition, form, or nature of ecosystems and deserve considerable attention from conservation scientists. We applied the transformer species concept to the plague bacterium Yersinia pestis in western North America, where the pathogen was introduced around 1900. Y. pestis transforms grassland ecosystems by severely depleting the abundance of prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) and thereby causing declines in native species abundance and diversity, including threatened and endangered species; altering food web connections; altering the import and export

Fungal necromass dominates soil organic carbon accrual after decadal active restoration of alpine grassland.

Active (seeding native grasses) and passive (natural recovery via degradation factor removal) restoration practices regulate soil organic carbon (SOC) recovery in degraded grasslands through distinct mechanisms. We quantified microbial- (amino sugars) and plant-derived (lignin phenols) C contributions to SOC after a 10-year restoration of degraded grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Active restoration increased SOC to 17.8 and 18.1 g·kg-1 in the topsoil and subsoil, respectively, whereas passive restoration maintained SOC at degraded levels (9.3 and 3.5 g·kg-1). Microbial-derived C cont

Nitrification Couples Microbial CO2 Fixation to Warming and Drought Responses in Alpine Grassland Soils.

Microbial CO2 fixation in alpine grassland soils is highly sensitive to warming and drought. Nitrogen inputs from grazing may stimulate autotrophic nitrifiers, including ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). These nitrifiers assimilate carbon through CO2 fixation, but how their activity is associated with microbial CO2 fixation under warming and drought remains unclear. Here, we investigated microbial CO2 fixation and nitrification under altered temperature and moisture using urea-amended soil microcosms with 13CO2 labeling, DN
