Nonlinear Gravitational Memory in the Post-Minkowskian Expansion.

We present the first computation of the nonlinear gravitational memory waveform for the scattering of two compact objects in general relativity at leading order in the post-Minkowskian expansion. We use the scattering-amplitude-based representation of the gravitational waveform, which naturally expresses the nonlinear memory as the contribution of soft gravitons emitted by the gravitational waves themselves. We perform the calculation by applying a multipolar decomposition to the waveform and using the reverse unitarity method to obtain explicit exact-in-velocity predictions. We validate the r

Gravitational redshift revisited: Inertia, geometry, and charge.

Gravitational redshift effects undoubtedly exist; moreover, the experimental setups which confirm the existence of these effects-the most famous of which being the Pound-Rebka experiment-are extremely well-known. Nonetheless-and perhaps surprisingly-there remains a great deal of confusion in the literature regarding what these experiments really establish. Our goal in the present article is to clarify these issues, in three concrete ways. First, although (i) Brown and Read (2016) are correct to point out that, given their sensitivity, the outcomes of experimental setups such as the original Po

Evidence of weight-based representations of gravitational motion.

A hypothesis gaining increasing popularity is that laypeople's representations of physical phenomena might be driven by internalized physical laws. In three experiments, we tested if such hypothesis holds true for the representation of gravitational motion. Participants were presented with realistic, real-scale virtual spheres falling vertically downward from about 2 m high. The spheres appeared to be made of either polystyrene or wood. In Experiment 1, participants adjusted the falling motion pattern until it appeared to be natural. In Experiment 2, they compared the perceived naturalness of

Subarachnoid hemorrhage from sudden gravitational changes.

Diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage is commonly attributed to the rupture of intracranial aneurysms or other vascular malformations. Non-aneurysmal hemorrhages often have a characteristic pattern or clear mechanism (e.g. trauma) with an often more benign clinical course. We report the case of a diffuse non-aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage due to sudden gravitational changes encountered during complex airflight maneuvers, complicated by hydrocephalus and cerebral vasospasm. This case illustrates a rare phenomenon that may again be encountered in the future with the advent and advancement of civil

GW240925 and GW250207: Astrophysical Calibration of Gravitational Wave Detectors.

GW240925 and GW250207 are two loud gravitational-wave signals from binary black hole coalescences observed with network signal-to-noise ratios ∼32 and ∼69, respectively, by the LIGO Hanford-LIGO Livingston-Virgo network. Gravitational-wave signals from coalescing binaries have characteristic phase and amplitude evolution predicted by general relativity. These signal waveforms, together with measured instrumental calibration uncertainties, are used to infer source parameters. However, for sufficiently loud detections, it is possible to constrain the calibration of the detectors directly using t

Carrollian-Holographic Derivation of Gravitational Flux-Balance Laws.

We demonstrate that the Bondi-van der Burg-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) evolution equations for the mass and angular momentum aspects in asymptotically flat Einstein gravity follow from local Carroll, Weyl, and diffeomorphism invariance at the null conformal boundary, upon providing a minimalistic holographic dictionary as the sole input from the bulk. This result is a significant step in the quest for a flat-space holographic correspondence and offers a geometric implementation of the radiative degrees of freedom that source the boundary theory in the presence of bulk gravitational waves.

Effects of gravitational time dilation on multi-photon interference.

The unification of quantum mechanics and general relativity remains elusive due to the lack of experimental signatures. To explore the parameter regimes where both theories are relevant, growing attention is being paid to investigating the general relativistic effects on low-energy quantum systems. Such research offers valuable insights into the connection between the two pillars of modern physics. Entanglement and gravitational time dilation capture key aspects of quantum mechanics and general relativity, respectively. Thus, the dynamical evolution of entangled systems in curved space unambig

Limits on High-Frequency Gravitational Waves in Planetary Magnetospheres.

High-frequency gravitational waves (HFGWs) carry a wealth of information on the early Universe with a tiny comoving horizon and astronomical objects of small scale but with dense energy. We demonstrate that the nearby planets, such as Earth and Jupiter, can be utilized as a laboratory for detecting the HFGWs. These GWs are then expected to convert to signal photons in the planetary magnetosphere, across the frequency band of astronomical observation. As a proof of concept, we present the first limits from the existing low-Earth-orbit satellite for specific frequency bands and project the sensi

Gravitational effects on intraocular pressure and ocular perfusion pressure.

Changes in the gravitational vector by postural changes or weightlessness induce fluid shifts, impacting ocular hemodynamics and regional pressures. This investigation explores the impact of changes in the direction of the gravitational vector on intraocular pressure (IOP), mean arterial pressure at eye level (MAPeye), and ocular perfusion pressure (OPP), which is critical for ocular health. Thirteen subjects underwent 360° of tilt (including both prone and supine positions) at 15° increments. At each angle, steady-state IOP and MAPeye were measured, and OPP calculated as MAPeye - IOP. Experim

Overcoming CSF overdrainage with the adjustable gravitational valve proSA.

BACKGROUND: Despite progress in shunt valve technology, CSF overdrainage is still one of the most frequent complications in shunt-treated hydrocephalus. Particularly with regard to young and adolescent patients, treatment of manifest overdrainage is complicated by several hardly influenceable factors such as increasing height and mobility. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficiency of the new adjustable gravitational valve, proSA. METHODS: Sixty-four shunt-treated young hydrocephalus patients aged 1.8-41.4 years (15.5 ± 10.5 years) suffering from clinical and/

Human lymphocyte sorting by gravitational field-flow fractionation.

Interest in biological studies on various cell types for many biomedical applications, from research to patient treatments, is constantly increasing. The ability to discriminate (sort) and/or quantify distinct subpopulations of cells has become increasingly important. For instance, not only detection but also the highest depletion of neoplastic cells from normal cells is an important requisite in the autologous transplantation of lymphocytes for blood cancer treatments. In this work, gravitational field-flow fractionation (GrFFF) is shown to be effective for sorting a heterogeneous mixture of

Gravitational torque drives multidecadal variations in length of day.

Fluctuations in the length of day (LOD) on decadal timescales are caused primarily by an exchange of angular momentum between the Earth's mantle and core1-3. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain this exchange, including electromagnetic4-7 and topographic8-10 coupling at the core-mantle boundary (CMB) and a gravitational torque by the inner core11,12. However, the precise nature of the core-mantle torque remains unknown. Here we show that the seismically reconstructed differential rotation of the inner core13-15 and core flows derived from magnetic field changes16,17 suggest that th

Multi-strategy collaborative optimization of gravitational search algorithm.

To address the shortcomings of the gravitational search algorithm, such as its tendency to fall into local optima, slow convergence, and low solution accuracy, this paper proposes a gravitational search algorithm based on multi-strategy cooperative optimization. The proposed algorithm balances global exploration and local exploitation. In the early iterations, particle positions are primarily updated using the original gravitational force, preserving the inherent characteristics of the gravitational search algorithm. In the later stages, particles with better fitness values are updated using a

Improved Gravitational Search Algorithm Based on Adaptive Strategies.

The gravitational search algorithm is a global optimization algorithm that has the advantages of a swarm intelligence algorithm. Compared with traditional algorithms, the performance in terms of global search and convergence is relatively good, but the solution is not always accurate, and the algorithm has difficulty jumping out of locally optimal solutions. In view of these shortcomings, an improved gravitational search algorithm based on an adaptive strategy is proposed. The algorithm uses the adaptive strategy to improve the updating methods for the distance between particles, gravitational

Direct Evidence of a Dual Cascade in Gravitational Wave Turbulence.

We present the first direct numerical simulation of gravitational wave turbulence. General relativity equations are solved numerically in a periodic box with a diagonal metric tensor depending on two space coordinates only, g_{ij}≡g_{ii}(x,y,t)δ_{ij}, and with an additional small-scale dissipative term. We limit ourselves to weak gravitational waves and to a freely decaying turbulence. We find that an initial metric excitation at intermediate wave number leads to a dual cascade of energy and wave action. When the direct energy cascade reaches the dissipative scales, a transition is observed in

Shepherding in a Self-gravitating Disk of Trans-Neptunian Objects.

A relatively massive and moderately eccentric disk of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) can effectively counteract apse precession induced by the outer planets, and in the process shepherd highly eccentric members of its population into nearly stationary configurations that are antialigned with the disk itself. We were sufficiently intrigued by this remarkable feature to embark on an extensive exploration of the full spatial dynamics sustained by the combined action of giant planets and a massive trans-Neptunian debris disk. In the process, we identified ranges of disk mass, eccentricity, and pre

Gravitational Influence on Intraocular Pressure: Implications for Spaceflight and Disease.

Spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) describes a series of morphologic and functional ocular changes in astronauts first reported by Mader and colleagues in 2011. SANS is currently clinically defined by the development of optic disc edema during prolonged exposure to the weightless (microgravity) environment, which currently occurs on International Space Station (ISS). However, as improvements in our understanding of the ocular changes emerge, the definition of SANS is expected to evolve. Other ocular SANS signs that arise during and after ISS missions include hyperopic shifts,

Gravitational Scattering of Solitonic Boson Stars: Analytics vs Numerics.

We study the scattering of two boson stars by comparing four sequences (at fixed energy and varying impact parameter) of numerical relativity simulations to an effective-one-body analytic description, taking into account both gravitational effects (point-mass and tidal) and short-range scalar-field interactions. We obtain excellent agreement between analytical and numerical results, exhibiting the importance of short-range scalar-field interactions for small impact parameters. Our Letter paves the way toward analytic waveform templates of exotic compact object binaries.
