Use of short-radius centrifugation to augment ankle-brachial indices.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral arterial disease is mainly caused by atherosclerosis and is characterized by decreased circulation, lower blood pressure, and insufficient tissue perfusion in the lower extremities. The hemodynamics of standing and altered gravity environments have been well studied relative to arm blood pressures but are less well understood for ankle pressures. METHODS: Because regional blood pressure depends, in part, on the gravitational pressure gradient, we hypothesized that artificial gravity exposure on a short-arm centrifuge with the center of rotation above the head would incr

Artificial Gravity Attenuates the Transcriptomic Response to Spaceflight in the Optic Nerve and Retina.

The development of eye pathology is a serious concern for astronauts who spend time in deep space. Microgravity is a major component of the spaceflight environment which could have adverse effects on ocular health. The use of centrifugation to exert forces that partially or fully mimic Earth-level gravity in space is a possible countermeasure to mitigate the effects of microgravity on the eye. Therefore, we subjected mice on the International Space Station (ISS) to microgravity (0 G) or artificial gravity by centrifugation at 0.33 G, 0.67 G, and 1 G, and then performed RNA sequencing (RNA-seq)

Lumbar muscle atrophy and increased relative intramuscular lipid concentration are not mitigated by daily artificial gravity after 60-day head-down tilt bed rest.

Exposure to axial unloading induces adaptations in paraspinal muscles, as shown after spaceflights. This study investigated whether daily exposure to artificial gravity (AG) mitigated lumbar spine flattening and muscle atrophy associated with 60-day head-down tilt (HDT) bed rest (Earth-based space analog). Twenty-four healthy individuals participated in the study: 8 received 30-min continuous AG; 8 received 6 × 5-min AG interspersed with rest periods; and 8 received no AG exposure (control group). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbopelvic region was conducted at baseline (BDC) and at

Getting ready for Mars: How the brain perceives new simulated gravitational environments.

On Earth, we are continually exposed to gravity: sensory signals are constantly integrated to form an internal model of gravity. However, it is unclear whether this internal model is fixed to Earth's gravity or whether it can be applied to a new gravitational environment. Under terrestrial gravity, observers show a "gravitational bias" while judging the speed of falling versus rising objects, as they comply with the physical laws of gravity. We investigated whether this gravitational bias may be present when judging the speed of objects moving upwards or downwards in both virtual reality (VR)-

Squat exercise biomechanics during short-radius centrifugation.

INTRODUCTION: Centrifuge-induced artificial gravity (AG) with exercise is a promising comprehensive countermeasure against the physiological de-conditioning that results from exposure to weightlessness. However, body movements onboard a rotating centrifuge are affected by both the gravity gradient and Coriolis accelerations. The effect of centrifugation on squat exercise biomechanics was investigated, and differences between AG and upright squat biomechanics were quantified. METHODS: There were 28 subjects (16 male) who participated in two separate experiments. Knee position, foot reaction fo

Coherence between brain cortical function and neurocognitive performance during changed gravity conditions.

Previous studies of cognitive, mental and/or motor processes during short-, medium- and long-term weightlessness have only been descriptive in nature, and focused on psychological aspects. Until now, objective observation of neurophysiological parameters has not been carried out--undoubtedly because the technical and methodological means have not been available--, investigations into the neurophysiological effects of weightlessness are in their infancy (Schneider et al. 2008). While imaging techniques such as positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) would be hard

Effects of five days of bed rest with intermittent centrifugation on neurovestibular function.

OBJECTIVES: We tested whether intermittent short-radius centrifugation was effective for mitigating alteration in balance and gait following bed rest. METHODS: Ten male subjects were exposed to 5 days of 6° head-down tilt bed rest with: (a) no countermeasure; (b) daily 1-g centrifugation for a continuous 30-min period; and (c) daily 1-g centrifugation for six periods of 5 min. During and after the bed rest, subjects were asked to scale the severity of neurovestibular symptoms that followed centrifugation or 80° head-up tilt. Following the bed rest, equilibrium scores were derived from anterio

Brief exposure to -2 Gz reduces cerebral oxygenation in response to stand test.

The aim of the present experiment was to determine whether a single 30 s of exposure to -2 Gz (foot-to-head inertial forces) as orthostatic stress results in altered brain oxygenation control in response to active standing. Cerebral oxygenation (oxy-Hb), cerebral blood volume (CBV), and mean arterial blood pressure at brain level (MAPbrain) were recorded in 12 subjects in supine and then in standing position (10 min), before and after -2 Gz centrifugation. The decrease in oxy-Hb (-5 +/- 9 vs. -9 +/- 10 microM, P < 0.001) and in CBV (-2 +/- 11 vs. -4 +/- 12 microM, P < 0.05) upon standing was m

Artificial gravity in space and in medical research.

The history of manned space flight has repeatedly documented the fact that prolonged sojourn in space causes physiological deconditioning. Physiological deterioration has raised a legitimate concern about man's ability to adequately perform in the course of long missions and even the possibility of leading to circumstances threatening survival. One of the possible countermeasures of physiological deconditioning, theoretically more complete than others presently used since it affects all bodily systems, is artificial gravity. Space stations and spacecrafts can be equipped with artificial gravit

Artificial gravity during prolonged bed rest preserves resting metabolic rate but not muscle function: Evidence from the BRACE study.

Prolonged head-down tilt bed rest induces metabolic and neuromuscular deconditioning. This study examined whether supine cycling exercise, with/without artificial gravity (AG), preserves resting metabolic rate (RMR) during 60 days of bed rest, and whether RMR responses align with integrated multivariate physiological adaptations. Twenty-four healthy men were randomly assigned to control (C), cycling (EX) or cycling plus AG (EX-AG). RMR, substrate oxidation, body composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry/magnetic resonance imaging), muscle function and maximal cycling power were assessed be

Manned interplanetary missions: prospective medical problems.

The present review aimed to suggest approaches to prospective medical problems related to the health maintenance of space crews during future manned interplanetary, particularly Martian, missions up to 2-3 years with a possible stay on a planet with gravity different from that on Earth. The approaches are based on knowledge so far obtained from our analysis of the medical support of long-term orbital flights up to one year, as well as on the consideration of specific conditions of interplanetary missions. These specific conditions include not only long-term exposure to microgravity, but also a

Orientation and movement in unusual force environments.

A manned space mission to Mars might take as long as 1 year each way. Consequently, artificial gravity is being considered as a way of preventing the debilitating effects of long-duration exposure to microgravity on the human body. The present article discusses some of the problems associated with adapting to the rotation levels that might be used to generate artificial gravity. It also describes how exposure to background-force levels greater or less than the 1-G force of Earth gravity affects orientation and movement control. The primary emphasis of the article is that human movement and ori

Sensory conflict compared in microgravity, artificial gravity, motion sickness, and vestibular disorders.

UNLABELLED: Perceptual disturbances and motion sickness are often attributed to sensory conflict. We investigated several conditions: head movements in microgravity, periodic motions in 1-g, and locomotion with vestibular disorders. In every case, linear vectors such as linear and gravitational acceleration are crucial factors, as previously found for head movements in artificial gravity, and thus the importance of measuring linear vectors emerges as a common theme. By modeling the sensory conflict between the vestibular and somatosensory systems, we computed a measure of linear conflict known

Comparison of joint kinematics between upright front squat exercise and horizontal squat exercise performed on a short arm human centrifugation.

This study compared the joint kinematics between the front squat (FS) conducted in the upright (natural gravity) position and in the supine position on a short arm human centrifuge (SAHC). Male participants (N = 12) with no prior experience exercising on a centrifuge completed a FS in the upright position before (PRE) and after (POST) a FS exercise conducted on the SAHC while exposed to artificial gravity (AG). Participants completed, in randomized order, three sets of six repetitions with a load equal to body weight or 1.25 × body weight for upright squats, and 1 g and 1.25 g at the center of

[Development and application of self-powered short arm human centrifuge].

OBJECTIVE: To present the development and application of a self-powered short arm human centrifuge. METHOD: Self-powered short arm human centrifuge consisted of human power, adjustable resistance trig, short arm and supporting construction parts. It was driven by human power. The short arm turned around the supporting part so artificial gravity is produced. The physical load can be adjusted by the adjustable resistance part. G-level depends on the rotative velocity of the central shaft. Nine healthy male volunteers received self-powered short arm human centrifuge training for 5 min per day wi

Bed Rest and Intermittent Centrifugation Effects on Human Balance and Neuromotor Reflexes.

INTRODUCTION: The effects of repeated centrifugation in association with head-down tilt (HDT) bed rest (BR) on the mediation of basic reflexes associated with the major postural muscles was investigated as a potential countermeasure for maintaining balance control and neuromotor reflex function. METHODS: There were 15 male volunteers who were exposed to 21 d of 6° HDT-BR. Eight were treated with daily 1-h artificial gravity (AG) exposures aboard a short radius centrifuge that provided 1-g footward loading at heart level. The other seven served as HDT-BR control subjects. Balance control was a

Artificial G-load and chemical changes of saliva.

Effectiveness of artificial G load is expected when it is used as a countermeasure against various bio-medical mishaps which are taking place in the micro-gravity environment, and probably more importantly, to prepare re-entry to the earth 1-G environment. Regarding the salivary chemical analysis, it has been known that, in case of (experimental) motion sickness, symptomatic outputs are delivered through the autonomic nervous system, and changes in salivary chemical components occur. In this study, accordingly, quantitative analyses of salivary potassium, sodium, chloride and total protein wer

Optokinetic nystagmus, vection, and motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Two current theories concerning the etiology of motion sickness (MS)-the eye movement hypothesis and sensory conflict theory-were evaluated under conditions that manipulated the degree of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) and/or vection. METHOD: Eye movement and perceptual responses were elicited with whole field stimulation in a vertically striped rotating drum and modulated with fixation and/or a restriction of the field of view (FOV). Measures of OKN, vection, and MS were recorded under the various conditions. RESULTS: Both visual field restriction and/or fixation diminished circula

G-factor as a tool in basic research: mechanisms of orthostatic tolerance.

The inability to tolerate upright standing posture due to development of orthostatic hypotension is a clinical problem experienced by more than 500,000 people in the United States. In addition, orthostatic intolerance is an operational problem since as many as 25 to 64 percent of the crew members from U.S. space shuttle flights have been reported to experience presyncopal incidents during postflight stand tests. Last year alone, more than 10,000 cases of unexplained syncope were reported in active duty personnel in all U.S. military services. Many clinical investigations have focused on measur
