Gravicurvature loss, changes in ultrastructure and calcium balance of pea root statocytes treated with EGTA.

Calcium is known to play a key role in the regulation of a wide variety of cellular events in plants, in particular as a second messenger in the transduction of gravity signals in statocytes. In order to investigate the role of extracellular calcium in gravity perception, many investigators have used ethylene glycol-bis-(aminoethyl ether)-N,N'-tetraacetic acid (EGTA), whose main property is the ability to form stable water-soluble complex compounds with divalent metals, particularly with Ca2+ ions, that do not penetrate across plasma membrane into a cell.

Gravity receptors: an ultrastructural basis for peripheral sensory processing.

Our ultrastructural study of serial sections has shown that type II hair cells of the anterior part of the utricular macula are integrated into the afferent neural circuitry of type I cells, which are arranged in clusters. Additionally, there exists a complex system of intramacularly originating efferent-type nerve fibers and terminals. The findings taken together suggest that, on morphological grounds, complex processing of sensory information occurs in gravity receptors. Asymmetry of such a complex system may contribute to motion and Space-motion sickness.

Bipolar mood cycles and lunar tidal cycles.

In 17 patients with rapid cycling bipolar disorder, time-series analyses detected synchronies between mood cycles and three lunar cycles that modulate the amplitude of the moon's semi-diurnal gravimetric tides: the 14.8-day spring-neap cycle, the 13.7-day declination cycle and the 206-day cycle of perigee-syzygies ('supermoons'). The analyses also revealed shifts among 1:2, 1:3, 2:3 and other modes of coupling of mood cycles to the two bi-weekly lunar cycles. These shifts appear to be responses to the conflicting demands of the mood cycles' being entrained simultaneously to two different bi-we

Attentional demands of perception of passive self-motion in darkness.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether significant attentional resources are required to accurately monitor changes in bodily orientation, using vestibular information. This question was addressed firstly using a dual-task paradigm in which orientation perception tasks and a speeded auditory tone discrimination task were carried out either singly or in combination. For the active orientation perception task, subjects were seated in darkness on a motorised chair which could be rotated about an earth-vertical axis. Following passive angular displacements, subjects were required to re

Voluntary toe-walking gait initiation: electromyographical and biomechanical aspects.

This study was carried out to investigate the biomechanical constraints of toe-walking gait initiation and the associated changes in motor program compared to the well documented heel-toe walking gait initiation. Seven healthy subjects volunteered for this study. Gait was initiated on a force platform, at three self-selected speed conditions, from an erect spontaneous posture in the control situation (CS) and from a posture with heels raised in the test situation (TS). Surface electromyographical (EMG) activities of muscles soleus (Sol) and tibialis anterior (TA) were recorded on both limbs. W

[Clinical symptoms, origin, and therapy of the "pusher syndrome"].

Stroke patients may exhibit the peculiar behavior of actively pushing away from the nonhemiparetic side, leading to lateral postural imbalance and a tendency to fall towards the paralyzed side. These patients use the nonparetic extremities to stem actively against attempts of passive correction towards upright orientation. This phenomenon has been called the "pusher syndrome". Recent findings disclose that the deficit leading to contraversive pushing is an altered perception of the body's orientation in relation to gravity. Pusher patients experience their body as upright when they are actuall

Otoconin-90 deletion leads to imbalance but normal hearing: a comparison with other otoconia mutants.

Our sense of gravitation and linear acceleration is mediated by stimulation of vestibular hair cells through displacement of otoconia in the utricle and saccule (the gravity receptor organ). We recently showed that otoconin-90 (Oc90) deletion led to formation of giant otoconia. In the present study, we determined the extent to which the giant otoconia affected balance and gravity receptor sensory input and compared the findings with other otoconia mutants. We employed a wide spectrum of balance behavioral tests, including reaching and air-righting reflexes, gait, swimming, beam-crossing, rotor

Perception of spatial orientation in spasmodic torticollis. Part I: The postural vertical.

Estimates of points of entering and exiting from upright posture were obtained from 25 seated, restrained patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis (ST) and matched normal subjects exposed to cycles of 1.5 degrees/s tilts in a flight simulator. Estimates were obtained for displacements in roll and pitch about upright and for yaw tilts about a rostrocaudal, "barbecue," axis with the subjects supinated. For both pitch and roll, normal subjects estimated entering upright when they were still approximately 1 degree from machine upright and perceived themselves to be upright through a mean arc

Bioinspired dynamic inclination measurement using inertial sensors.

Biologically, the vestibular feedback is critical to the ability of human body to balance in different conditions. This balancing ability inspires analysis of the reference equilibrium position in dynamic environments. The research proposes and experimentally validates the concept of equilibrium for the human body modeled as an inverted pendulum, which is instrumental in explaining why we align the body along the surface normal when standing on a surface but not on an incline, and tend to lean backward or forward on non-static surfaces e.g. accelerating or decelerating bus. This equilibrium po

Gravity related research with fishes--perspectives in regard to the upcoming International Space Station, ISS.

During the entire evolution of life on Earth, the development of all organisms took place under constant gravity conditions, against which they achieved specific countermeasures for compensation and adaptation. On this background, it is still an open question to which extent altered gravity such as hypergravity (centrifuge) or microgravity (spaceflight) affects the normal individual development, either on the systemic level of the whole organism or on the level of individual organs or even single cells. The present review provides information on these questions, comprising gravistimulated effe

Cupulin is a zona pellucida-like domain protein and major component of the cupula from the inner ear.

The extracellular membranes of the inner ear are essential constituents to maintain sensory functions, the cupula for sensing torsional movements of the head, the otoconial membrane for sensing linear movements and accelerations like gravity, and the tectorial membrane in the cochlea for hearing. So far a number of structural proteins have been described, but for the gelatinous cupula precise data are missing. Here, we describe for the first time a major proteinogenic component of the cupula structure with an apparent molecular mass of 45 kDa from salmon. Analyses of respective peptides reveal

On the Use of Non-Contact Capacitive Sensors for the Assessment of Postural Hand Tremor of Individuals with Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinsonian tremor manifests in different types: rest, postural, and action tremors. The postural tremor occurs while a body part is held straight out from the body in a stable position against gravity. The Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), which is a subjective assessment performed by the qualitative judgment of neurologists, is the clinical standard for parkinsonian tremor assessment. Despite the common use of subjective methods, inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors are largely used in many studies as a motion capture system to objective assessment of tremors. However, th

Vestibular coriolis effect differences modeled with three-dimensional linear-angular interactions.

The vestibular coriolis (or "cross-coupling") effect is traditionally explained by cross-coupled angular vectors, which, however, do not explain the differences in perceptual disturbance under different acceleration conditions. For example, during head roll tilt in a rotating chair, the magnitude of perceptual disturbance is affected by a number of factors, including acceleration or deceleration of the chair rotation or a zero-g environment. Therefore, it has been suggested that linear-angular interactions play a role. The present research investigated whether these perceptual differences and

Size and cell number of the utricle in kinetotically swimming fish: a parabolic aircraft flight study.

Humans taking part in parabolic aircraft flights (PAFs) may suffer from space motion sickness (SMS, a kinetosis). Since it has been repeatedly shown earlier that some fish of a given batch also reveal a kinetotic behavior during PAFs (especially so-called spinning movements and looping responses) and due to the homology of the vestibular apparatus among all vertebrates, fish can be used as model systems to investigate the origin of susceptibility to motion sickness. Therefore, we examined the utricular maculae (they are responsible for the internalization of gravity in teleosteans) of fish swi

Responses of the photosynthetic flagellate, Euglena gracilis, to hypergravity.

Motility and orientation has been studied in the unicellular photosynthetic flagellate, Euglena gracilis, using real time image analysis capable of tracking up to 200 cells simultaneously in the slow rotating centrifuge microscope (NIZEMI) which allows one to observe the cells' swimming behavior during centrifugation accelerations between 1 g and 5 g. At 1 g the cells show a weak negative gravitaxis, which increases significantly at higher accelerations up to about 3 g. Though most cells were capable of swimming even against an acceleration of 4.5 g, the degree of gravitaxis decreased and some

Gravity dependence of the effect of optokinetic stimulation on the subjective visual vertical.

Accurate and precise estimates of direction of gravity are essential for spatial orientation. According to Bayesian theory, multisensory vestibular, visual, and proprioceptive input is centrally integrated in a weighted fashion based on the reliability of the component sensory signals. For otolithic input, a decreasing signal-to-noise ratio was demonstrated with increasing roll angle. We hypothesized that the weights of vestibular (otolithic) and extravestibular (visual/proprioceptive) sensors are roll-angle dependent and predicted an increased weight of extravestibular cues with increasing ro

Mathematical modelling of morphogenesis in fungi: a key role for curvature compensation ('autotropism') in the local curvature distribution model.

The assumption that the mushroom stem has the ability to undergo autonomic straightening enables a mathematical model to be written that accurately mimics the gravitropic reaction of the stems of Coprinus cinereus. The straightening mechanism is called curvature compensation here, but is equivalent to the 'autotropism' that often accompanies the gravitropic reactions of axial organs in plants. In the consequently revised local curvature distribution model, local bending rate is determined by the difference between the 'bending signal' (generated by gravitropic signal perception systems) and th

Fluidic shaping and in-situ measurement of liquid lenses in microgravity.

In the absence of gravity, surface tension dominates over the behavior of liquids. While this often poses a challenge in adapting Earth-based technologies to space, it can also provide an opportunity for novel technologies that utilize its advantages. In particular, surface tension drives a liquid body to a constant-mean-curvature shape with extremely smooth surfaces, properties which are highly beneficial for optical components. We here present the design, implementation and analysis of parabolic flight experiments demonstrating the creation and in-situ measurement of optical lenses made enti

Juno's Close Encounter With Ganymede-An Overview.

The Juno spacecraft has been in orbit around Jupiter since 2016. Two flybys of Ganymede were executed in 2021, opportunities realized by evolution of Juno's polar orbit over the intervening 5 years. The geometry of the close flyby just prior to the 34th perijove pass by Jupiter brought the spacecraft inside Ganymede's unique magnetosphere. Juno's payload, designed to study Jupiter's magnetosphere, had ample dynamic range to study Ganymede's magnetosphere. The Juno radio system was used both for gravity measurements and for study of Ganymede's ionosphere. Remote sensing of Ganymede returned new
