INTRODUCTION: Left-right brain asymmetry is an important feature of human neuroanatomy, with implications for cognition, behavior, and vulnerability to mental disorders. Despite evidence for lateralized brain sensitivity to hormonal fluctuations, the cortical and subcortical asymmetry profile of individuals with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a hormone-related mood disorder associated with alterations in brain structure, remains unexplored.
METHODS: In this study, a total of 68 females with PMDD and 51 healthy females underwent magnetic resonance imaging during the luteal phase of th

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain. Recent studies suggest that amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides interact with cell membranes, potentially catalyzing plaque formation. However, the effect of varying cell membrane compositions on this catalytic process requires further investigation. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate that a model gray matter membrane significantly influences the secondary structure of β-amyloid peptides. Notably, residues Asp1 and Glu22 play crucial roles in the membrane interaction. Glutamic acid at position 22, l

Various etiologic diagnoses are put forward for certain forms of infant epilepsy. We report four cases illustrating a rare cause: gray matter heterotopia. There were three girls and one boy, aged 3 months to 4 years at onset of seizures and 8 to 30 years at diagnosis of gray matter heterotopia. All patients sought healthcare because of repeated seizures. One patient also presented severe mental retardation. No consanguinity was noted. Magnetic resonance imaging showed the interposition of an ectopic ribbon of gray matter within the white matter in all cases. Ectopic gray matter formed bilatera

Since it was first described in 1958, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a demyelinating disease of the brain caused by the polyomavirus JC (JCV), has evolved tremendously. It was once considered a noninflammatory disease that affected exclusively oligodendrocytes and astrocytes in the white matter of immunosuppressed individuals and was almost always fatal. Today, we understand that PML can present during the course of an immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome and that it affects a broader range of individuals, including patients with minimal immunosuppression and those wh

Severe infant epilepsy is included within difficult etiologic diagnosis. Gray matter heterotopias are an uncommon cause. The authors report four observations of gray matter heteropias concerning three-, six-, seven- and nine-year-old girls, presenting no particular antecedents. No consanguinity was noted. The first occurrence of epilepsy ranged from the age of nine months to the age of four years. A mild mental retardation was found in three cases, and mental regression in one case. A status epilepticus was noted in three children. Magnetic resonance imaging scans showed subependymal heterotop

Anomalies of cell migration manifest themselves in many ways with various clinical and morphological aspects. Among these, heterotopic gray matter, especially when isolated, is characterized by slighter symptoms and later onset. In this paper eight cases of gray matter heterotopia are presented which have been studied over a two-year period. Magnetic Resonance imaging is emphasised for a correct diagnosis.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The authors applied diffusion-tensor imaging including measurements of mean diffusivity (MD), which is a parameter of brain tissue integrity, fractional anisotropy (FA), which is a parameter of neuronal fiber integrity, and voxel-based morphometry, which is a measure of gray and white matter volume, to detect brain tissue changes in patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy.
DESIGN: N/A.
PATIENTS: Patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy (n = 16) and age-matched healthy control subjects (n = 12) were studied.
INTERVENTIONS: Whole cerebral MD, FA measures, and the volumes of the gray an

Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects older premutation carriers (55-200 CGG repeats) of the fragile X gene. Despite the high prevalence of the FXTAS disorder, neuropathology studies of individuals affected by FXTAS are limited. We performed hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining in the hippocampus of 26 FXTAS cases and analyzed the tissue microscopically. The major neuropathological characteristics were white matter disease, intranuclear inclusions in neurons and astrocytes, and neuron loss. Astrocytes contained more and larger inclusio

Maternal deprivation (MD) in rhesus monkeys has been demonstrated to be an effective model to mimic early adversity in humans because of the close phylogenetic similarity affinity. Although behavioral and hormonal abnormalities have been observed in MD monkeys, the neurobiological underpinning of the long-term deleterious effect of MD on monkeys is still unclear. In this study, we assessed emotional changes and socio-behavioral abnormalities induced by long-term MD and assessed structural alterations of gray matter volume (GMV) and white matter integrity (WMI) in 15 MD rhesus monkeys and in 15

We observed the characteristics of white matter fibers and gray matter in multiple sclerosis patients, to identify changes in diffusion tensor imaging fractional anisotropy values following white matter fiber injury. We analyzed the correlation between fractional anisotropy values and changes in whole-brain gray matter volume. The participants included 20 patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis and 20 healthy volunteers as controls. All subjects underwent head magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging. Our results revealed that fractional anisotropy values decreased

Accumulating evidence has indicated that amputation induces functional reorganization in the sensory and motor cortices. However, the extent of structural changes after lower limb amputation in patients without phantom pain remains uncertain. We studied 17 adult patients with right lower limb amputation and 18 healthy control subjects using T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging. Cortical thickness and fractional anisotropy (FA) of white matter (WM) were investigated. In amputees, a thinning trend was seen in the left premotor cortex (PMC). Smaller clusters were al

OBJECTIVE: The pathophysiological spectrum of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a continuum, with the AT(N) framework defining stages based on the presence of Aβ pathology, tau pathology, and neurodegeneration. However, the spatial characteristics of gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) changes at different stages remain insufficiently defined. This study aimed to establish a cross-sectional cohort of the AD continuum using the AT(N) staging system and systematically delineate the spatial features of GM and WM changes across this spectrum.
METHODS: This study included subjects across the AD conti

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative disease associated with exposure to repetitive head impacts (RHI). In CTE, hyperphosphorylated tau (p-tau) aggregates are found in neurons at the depth of cortical sulci close to the gray matter/white matter (GM/WM) boundary. To date, CTE can only be diagnosed postmortem by neuropathological examination. Traumatic encephalopathy syndrome (TES) is the clinical syndrome purported to be associated with CTE pathology. The aim of this study is to investigate microstructural properties at the GM/WM boundary in individuals with a history o

Diffusion tensor imaging has already been extensively used to probe microstructural alterations in white matter tracts, and scarcely, in deep gray matter. However, results in literature regarding age-related degenerative mechanisms in white matter tracts and parametric changes in the putamen are inconsistent. Diffusional kurtosis imaging is a mathematical extension of diffusion tensor imaging, which could more comprehensively mirror microstructure, particularly in isotropic tissues such as gray matter. In this study, we used the diffusional kurtosis imaging method and a white-matter model that

BACKGROUND: Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) involves complex neurobiological changes that are often difficult to quantify using conventional MRI. This study aims to utilize Neurite Orientation Dispersion and Density Imaging (NODDI) combined with Gray-matter Based Spatial Statistics (GBSS) to characterize microstructural alterations in patients with HE and explore their relationship with clinical biochemical markers, specifically within the globus pallidus (GP).
METHODS: Thirty-three patients with HE and 31 healthy controls underwent 3 T MRI including a multi-shell diffusion protocol for NODDI. GB

White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are linked to gray matter volume (GMV) and cognitive abilities in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the detailed patterns of how WMHs affect brain structure and cognition in AD require more study. We examined 42 AD patients, 54 with mild cognitive impairment, and 59 normal controls. Using various correlation analyses, we explored the relationships between WMHs, GMV, and cognitive function. The findings indicate that WMHs significantly influence brain atrophy in AD, with total WMHs volume, subcortical WMHs volume, and the largest single WMH volume having th

Recent studies have demonstrated the reliable detection and analysis of white matter (WM) using the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) signal. This paper studies the multifractal spontaneous in WM based on the HCP test-retest datasets. Precisely: (1) multifractal in the WM; (2) the source of multifractal; (3) difference and similarity between the multifractal of WM and gray matter (GM). Results showed that WM appears to be multifractal and significantly different from GM, but the variability of brain regions in WM was smaller than that in GM. For example, in WM, ('Fo
