Q fever in children in Greece.

The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence, epidemiology, and clinical manifestations of Q fever among hospitalized children in Greece. During a two-year period, 1,200 children with various clinical manifestations were prospectively tested for Coxiella burnetii infection by indirect immunofluorescence. Acute Q fever was diagnosed in eight (0.67%) patients. No chronic case of infection was detected. Multivariate analysis showed that children 11-14 years old and children reporting consumption of cheese from rural areas were at increased risk for this illness. Clinical manifestations

Impact of the plague in Ancient Greece.

Disease as a pivotal factor in determining the course of human events may be one og the least considered historical variables. When assessing the critical junctures of history, historians seem more inclined to focus on the impact of conquering armies, economic revolutions, and technologic breakthroughs. This analysis attempts to illustrate the seminal effects of the great plague of Athens. By depleting Athenian military personnel, depriving Athens of its charismatic leadership, and dissolving the system of ideals and principles that distinguished Athens from the rest of antiquity, the plague m

The prevalence of goat hypodermosis in Greece.

Goat hypodermosis caused by Przhevalskiana silenus is common in Greece causing quite serious losses on animal production and breeding, but no data regarding the prevalence of this parasitic disease were available within the last 17 years. Towards this end, at the slaughter house of the area of Thessaloniki, the number of affected hides due to skin penetration by P. silenus larvae was recorded and the prevalence was assessed to be 54.2%. The mean number of holes found per hide was 27.07 (ranged from 0 to 162 holes per hide). Moreover, a total of 4900 goat blood serum samples were collected from

The prevalence of bovine hypodermosis in Greece.

Hypodermosis is a common parasitic disease of great importance on cattle production and breeding worldwide. In Greece, no reliable data are available regarding the extent of this infection and therefore, as expected, no national or regional control programme is being applied. In order to cover this lack of information, a total of 4200 cattle blood sera were collected from different parts of the country and tested for hypodermosis using the ELISA method. The prevalence of the infection was found to be 37.4%, varying from place to place between 0.7 and 78.8%. The range of the infection per flock

Human and canine dirofilariasis in Greece.

Human dirofilariasis is a disease which is considered to be rare in Greece, less than 20 cases having been reported prior to 1990. The clinical manifestations were usually subcutaneous nodules, and in only two cases there was ocular dirofilariasis. Eight new cases were recognized in humans during the last six years in Athens, two of which with ophthalmic involvement. Twelve additional cases have been detected but not published in Thessaloniki. In all human cases, the worms were identified as being Dirofilaria repens (D. conjunctivae). The identification was based on the morphological observati

Heterosexual transmission of HIV in Greece.

To provide further evidence for the heterosexual transmission of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in Greece we examined 53 Greek female steady heterosexual partners of 53 anti-HIV-positive men. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission was estimated by the detection of anti-HIV antibodies. Our results showed that 27.8% (5 of 18) of the female partners of bisexuals, 33.3% (2 of 6) of intravenous drug abusers (IVDA), and 100% (4 of 4) of those who had lived for a long time in Africa were found anti-HIV positive. In contrast, only 4% (1 of 25) of the studied sexual partners of

Smallpox in Greece: A Narrative Review.

Smallpox was a highly contagious viral disease that represented a major cause of mortality prior to its global eradication in 1980. This narrative review explores the epidemiological, historical, and public health dimensions of smallpox in Greece from the 18th to the 20th century. It analyzes documented outbreaks, demographic impacts, and the evolution of disease control measures. Emphasis is placed on Greek physician contributions to early inoculation practices, implementation of vaccination programs, and legislative frameworks including the 1835 mandatory vaccination decree. The progression

Faunistic study of sandflies in Greece.

A faunistic study of phlebotomine sandflies was carried out on the mainland and on four islands in Greece between 1999 and 2004. Sandflies were collected in 18 areas, and the population structure was observed and recorded. A total of 10 species were identified; their distribution is presented here. Of these, the species Phlebotomus neglectus Tonnoir and P. perfiliewi Parrot (Diptera: Psychodidae), epidemiologically the most important vectors of leishmaniases and sandfly fever in Greece, were shown to be present in the main endemic foci of the country.

Survey of neonatal candidiasis in Greece.

In order to estimate the extent of neonatal candidiasis in Greece and to identify trends in clinical management, the present study was conducted using a questionnaire directed to Greek neonatologists and pediatric infectious disease specialists. The respondents represented 15 hospitals in the country's seven largest cities, which are currently the only Greek cities with neonatal intensive care units. Based on the responses, the incidence of neonatal candidiasis was determined to be 1.87 and 1.94 cases per unit-year for the years 2001 and 2002, respectively. Although a shift toward the isolatio

The role of the flight surgeon in Greece.

From 1915 [corrected], the first time a flight surgeon participated in an aeromedical evacuation, to the present, the role has become more fundamental by working in wars and operations, experiencing search and rescue aeromedical evacuations from mass accidents or motor accidents, treating seriously ill individuals, and caring for wounded victims of attacks either at the scene or at the hospital. The improvements in cognitive and technological standards of medical science and in the education available have contributed in upgrading the role of flight surgeons; however, their presence in flight

The operation of lithotomy in ancient Greece.

Opening the bladder via the perineum in order to remove a bladder stone was practised by the ancient Greek surgeons in very early times, probably from the days of Homer. The technique of lithotomy was described for the first time by Celsus in the first century AD and has come to be known as the lesser operation or 'apparatus parvus', so called because only to instruments are needed for it, a knife and a hook. Two fingers of the surgeon's left hand were introduced into the patient's rectum while an assistant pressed on the lower abdomen to encourage descent of the stone near the neck of the bla

Byssinosis in cotton ginneries in Greece.

The prevalence of byssinosis in a sample of cotton ginnery workers in Greece was investigated. The respiratory symptoms, F.E.V.1·0, and V.C. of 70 male ginnery workers were recorded. No case of clinical byssinosis was found, but a statistically significant relationship exists between years of exposure to cotton dust and impairment of lung function. On the contrary no significant relationship exists between smoking and lung function, or between sputum production and lung function. The findings suggest the hypothesis that the cotton dust may exert, in the case of a prolonged exposure, a chronic
