Reconstruction of Spatial Organization and Cemetery Structure of Preadult Burials at the Phaleron Burial Ground (Archaic Athens, Greece) Using Deciduous Dental Morphology.

OBJECTIVES: This paper uses deciduous dental morphology to evaluate the spatial structure of the Archaic period site of Phaleron (Athens, Greece) with the goal of identifying possible biological kin- or community structuring of the burial ground. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Deciduous morphological data (77 total root-trait combinations) were collected by the author using published standards for 231 preadult individuals from Phaleron. After pre-analysis data treatments evaluating the effects of age, sex, and inter-trait correlation, remaining variables were compared among burial subsectors using Me

Gout in the writings of eminent ancient Greek and Byzantine physicians.

Gout is a medical condition with typical recurrent attacks of acute inflammatory arthritis. The severity of this illness has been recognised from antiquity, and several ancient physicians studied it intensively. This paper presents the pathogenesis of the disease, approaches to therapy and preventive measures based on a number of original medical scripts from Hippocrates to the end of the Byzantine era.

The ancient Greek poet Sappho and the first case report of the fight-or-flight response.

Sappho has always been regarded as one of the greatest lyric poets of ancient Greece. Her famous poem Fragment 31 V., also known as the "Ode to Jealousy", accurately describes the profound emotional reaction triggered by the sight of her beloved. The poet's precise description of each sign and symptom triggered by this arousal makes Sappho 31 V., to the best of our knowledge, the first analytical description of the acute stress response, the so-called "fight-or-flight" response, in human history. Here, Fragment 31 V. is re-read from a medical point of view, correlating the ancient Greek lyric

Exploring mobility in Bronze Age Greece: A Sr isotope perspective.

The Mediterranean region saw significant socio-economic and cultural transformations during the Bronze Age, varying across regions and through time. Expanding exchange networks played an important role in these developments by connecting distant communities. To what extent these exchanges were accompanied by the migration and settlement of foreign individuals within local communities is still poorly understood. Here we present Sr isotope data from 199 skeletal samples belonging to individuals excavated at six archaeological sites from central and southern Greece to explore how mobility changed

Poseidon and Caeneus: a case of pubertal gender inversion in Greek mythology.

Disorders of sex development (DSDs) are very frequently encountered in ancient Greek mythology. One of the most striking types of DSD described in many myths is gender transformation wherein a female becomes a male or vice versa. Herein, we present via the marvelous myth of Poseidon and Caeneus a case of pubertal gender inversion. A medical interpretation of the myth whereby we attempt to form a diagnosis of this case of DSD is also presented.

Hippocrates on Pediatric Dermatology.

Hippocrates of Kos is well known in medicine, but his contributions to pediatric dermatology have not previously been examined. A systematic study of Corpus Hippocraticum was undertaken to document references of clinical and historical importance of pediatric dermatology. In Corpus Hippocraticum, a variety of skin diseases are described, along with proposed treatments. Hippocrates rejected the theory of the punishment of the Greek gods and supported the concept that dermatologic diseases resulted from a loss of balance in the body humors. Many of the terms that Hippocrates and his pupils used

[History of bipolar disorder: a consideration on ancient western literature].

We can find the description suggesting pathological shift from melancholia to mania in Diseases I (4th century BC) of Corpus Hippocraticum. However, it was 2nd century that detailed account concerning bipolar disorder in modern sense was supposed to appear. Especially the text of Aretaeus of Cappadocia contained several paragraphs indicating this disease. Thereafter in 6th century, Alexander of Tralles clearly mentioned the transition from melancholia to mania. In ancient world, both melancholia and mania embodied vast area of general mental derangement on the one hand, they had restricted mea

[Oedipus, the medicine and the "evidential paradigm"].

The inquiry about the causes of the Thebes plague characterizes Sophocles' tragedy Oedipus the King. This inquiry uses a circumstantial method (Ginzburg's "evidential paradigm") which can be compared to Peirce's abduction. The circumstantial knowledge is a proceedment of the hippocratic medicine and Sophocles undoubtedly knew it: it can also be observed in the Mesopotamian proceedments of divination and medicine from which it probably derives through a laicization process. This knowledge is related to the [see text], a type of intelligence which has to do with the development of fluent situati

[Galen's intermittent fever].

In his comprehensive Oeuvre, Galen of Pergamon, who interpreted and perfected Hippocratic medicine, made many times and in various contexts mention of the intermittent fevers, among which malaria undoubtedly held a prominent position. The following article gives an outline of Galen's theoretical concept of this infectious disease, which was of utmost importance for the history of Italy. Galen describes three different types of intermittent fevers, of which, according to his theory of humoural pathology, each one is caused by a special humour with its respective qualities. Thus the quotidian fe

The Thasian epidemic of mumps during the 5th century BC.

This article briefly reminds the readers of the huge importance of Hippocrates observation about the epidemic of mumps in Thasos during the fifth century BC. By putting great emphasis on the value of observation of the disease process, mainly from the practical point of view, the Corpus Hippocraticum gave us the first written detailed description of the disease.

[What was the plague of Athens?].

In the year 430 B.C., at the beginning of the second year of the Peloponessian War, a terrible epidemic fell upon Athens and the most populous cities in Attica. It would last for just over four years and it would kill 100.000 people, a quarter to a third of the population. We know about it through the masterly description made by Thucydides in his History of the Peloponnesian War. His narrative has withstood twentyfive centuries due to its medical interest and, above all, its great dramatic force. The description of symptoms and signs, their evolution, and the consequences upon persons and mor

["Interpreter of dreams" and "dreamer" in Homer].

In this essay I examine the figure of the homeric [Greek characters: see text], a term which recurs in two passages of the Iliad (I 63; V 149). It has been explained both with the meaning of "interpreter of dreams" and of "dreamer" using his own gifts in favour of the community. This latter seems to be the most ancient use of the word, as it results in the episode told in the first book of the Iliad (crisis in the Greek army after the plague sent by Apollo). This use has an interesting parallel in some functions of the Spartan ephors and, in the second millennium, in the professional figure of

The Aristotelian kidney.

Aristotle incorrectly observed the absence of the kidney in fish and birds and deduced that it was not essential for the existence of a living organism. This underlies his observations on structure and function of the kidney. From examination of rhesus monkeys he generalized that the right kidney is higher than the left. Aristotle did not consider that the renal pelvis is divided by a filter membrane into 2 chambers, and wrote that no blood reaches the renal pelvis. The theory of the 'filter kidney' cannot thus be attributed to Aristotle. The function of the kidney was described as being to se
