Contrasting effects of biochar and compost on greenhouse gas emissions and the global warming potential of semi-arid cropping systems.

Agroecosystems in arid and semi-arid regions face growing risks of climate extremes and soil degradation. The addition of exogenous carbon can restore degraded soils by adding soil organic carbon, but its effects on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and global warming mitigation remain elusive. This study evaluated emissions of three major GHGs-nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4)-following soil amendment with biochar, compost, and a biochar + compost (BC) mixture. Biochar application reduced cumulative N2O-N and CH4-C emissions by 52% and 16%, respectively. Soil CH4-C emi

Variable effects of biochar on soil greenhouse gas emissions: A meta-analysis of climate, soil, and biochar property interactions.

Biochar application has been widely proposed as a climate-smart soil management strategy; however, related biochar studies result on soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions remain highly variable. Therefore, this study conducted a global meta-analysis to synthesize field-based evidence on the effects of biochar addition on soil carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, and to identify the key factors driving response heterogeneity under different environmental and management conditions. A total of 542 paired observations were compiled from published field experiments

Effects of Combined Application of Mushroom Residue and Chemical Fertilizer on Greenhouse Soil Quality and Microbial Community Structure and Function.

To explore the effects of different fertilization regimes on physicochemical properties and microbial ecology of greenhouse soil, we set five treatments with original soil (BS) as the control: chemical fertilizer alone (GF), high/low-rate mushroom residue combined with chemical fertilizer (MH, ML), and high/low-rate organic fertilizer combined with chemical fertilizer (OH, OL). Metagenomic sequencing and bioinformatic analyses were adopted to characterize soil nutrients, microbial communities, and C-N-P-S metabolic functions. All treatments increased soil nutrients. MH had the highest organic

Compounded effects on wetland greenhouse gas fluxes from climate change and water management along a saline to freshwater gradient.

Saline and freshwater wetlands store large amounts of carbon, which has driven interest in their role as nature-based climate solutions. Because these ecosystems can be both sinks and sources of carbon to the atmosphere as environmental conditions and human influence change, the net climate mitigation potential of wetlands at regional to global scales remains uncertain. We used a data-driven approach to measure ground-based and airborne fluxes to upscale carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes using satellite-based surface reflectances at 500-m resolution across a gradient of saline to f

The Interplay Between Climate Warming Driven by Greenhouse Gas Emissions and the Ecotoxicological Effects of Microplastics: Insights From a Meta-Analysis.

An increasing number of studies have revealed the interconnections and interactions between global warming and microplastics. However, research in this field is still in its early stages, with fragmented content and inconsistent conclusions. Therefore, this paper adopts a meta-analysis method to summarize and analyze the relevant literature in this area. After screening, a total of 39 research papers and 730 data points related to the interactions between global warming and microplastic pollution were obtained. The research results indicate that, on one hand, soil microplastic pollution signif

Modeling and optimal control applied to reduce the effects of greenhouse gases emitted from the coal-based power plant in Bangladesh.

The coal-fired power station is believed to be one of the major emitters of air pollutants, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2), which is the main sensitive driver of climate change due to global warming, consequently causing significant intimidation for the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest and nearby due to high emissions of air pollutants such as Carbon-Di-Oxide (CO2). Here, we used a compartmental mathematical model with 3 compartments to study the dynamics of greenhouse gas emissions, concentration, and uptake, which we can control by installing a chemical reactor system near

Effects of anthropogenic activities on soil microbial communities and greenhouse gas fluxes in coastal wetlands of the Yellow River Delta, China.

Coastal wetlands are key emitters of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Anthropogenic activities can alter the carbon and nitrogen cycle patterns in wetlands, thereby greatly affecting GHG fluxes. Previous studies have focused only on the effects of a single anthropogenic activity, thus, the effects of multiple anthropogenic activities on GHG fluxes and the underlying microbiological mechanisms remain unknown. Compared to natural reed areas (NA), our study investigated the four typical anthropogenic activities (Yellow River farmland (YA), sewage outfalls (SA), mariculture (MA), and oil extraction areas

Monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions and compost quality during olive mill waste co-composting at industrial scale: The effect of N and C sources.

Olive mill wastes (OMW) management by composting allows to obtain valuable fertilizing products, but also implies significant fluxes of greenhouse gases (GHG). For a proper OMW composting, high C- and N co-substrates are necessary, but little is known concerning their effect on GHG emissions in OMW-industrial scale composting. In this study, different co-composting agents (cattle manure (CM), poultry manure (PM), sheep manure (SM) and pig slurry solid fraction (PSSF) as N sources and olive leaves (OLW) and urban pruning residues (UPR) as bulking agents and C sources) were used for OMW composti

Comprehensive evaluation of manganese oxides and iron oxides as metal substrate materials for constructed wetlands from the perspective of water quality and greenhouse effect.

Manganese oxides and iron oxides have been widely introduced in constructed wetlands (CWs) for sewage treatment due to their extensiveness in nature and their ability to participate in various reactions, but their effects on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions remain unclear. Here, a set of vertical subsurface-flow CWs (Control, Fe-VSSCWs, and Mn-VSSCWs) was established to comprehensively evaluate which are the better metal substrate materials for CWs, iron oxides or manganese oxides, through water quality and the global warming potential (GWP) of nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4), and carbon diox

Optimizing Olive (Olea europaea) Leaves as a Sustainable Ruminant Feed: Effects of Chemical Treatments on Nutritional Value and Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of treating olive (Olea europaea) leaves with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or urea (both at 4% for 40 d) or supplementing with polyethylene glycol (PEG) at 100 mg/g DM on their nutrient composition, gas production, methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) productions, and fermentation profile. The results showed that NaOH-treated leaves had the lowest organic matter and fiber fractions, while urea-treated olive leaves exhibited the highest crude protein content (p < 0.001). Asymptotic gas production was significantly higher (p = 0.015) in urea-

Effects of guanidinoacetic acid and live yeast cells on cattle rumen fermentation and greenhouse biogas production in vitro of ten shrub species.

Enteric gas production during rumen fermentation, enteric methane (CH4), contributes to approximately 14-18% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and a reduction of 2% to 15% in consumed energy. Therefore, reducing enteric CH4 production may have environmental (CH4 is a potent greenhouse gas), nutritional (decreased energy losses), and economic benefits (enhanced animal productivity). The trial aimed to evaluate the effects of guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) and live yeast cells (YEA) on methane, carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production, and on ruminal fermentation characteri

Biochar mitigates biodegradable microplastic-induced greenhouse gas emissions in lake sediments: Unraveling microbial mechanisms and particle-size effects.

Accumulation of biodegradable microplastics (MPs) in freshwater sediments exacerbates greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, though effective mitigation strategies are still poorly understood. This study investigated the potential of biochar (BC) for carbon sequestration and its role in suppressing MP-induced GHG emissions. Herein, we elucidated the effects of biodegradable MPs Poly (butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and different-sized (bulk- and nano-) BC on carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) emissions. Results revealed that PBAT significantly reduced sediment pH and oxidation-reduction

Synergistic effects of biochar and organic fertilizer on the regulation of microbial carbon and nitrogen metabolism in paddy soil to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions.

Biochar and organic fertilizer have been widely applied to improve soil carbon sequestration and mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in rice production systems. However, the synergistic mechanisms through which these amendments regulate microbial carbon/nitrogen (C/N) metabolism, net GHG emissions, and crop productivity in dry direct-seeded rice (DDSR) systems remain insufficiently understood. In this study, a two-year field experiment was conducted with combined treatments of organic fertilizer substitution (0% and 20%) and biochar application (0, 5, and 10 t/hm2) to evaluate their integr
