Inventory of the terrestrial isopods in Belgium (2011-2020).

This data paper describes a recent and spatially complete inventory of the terrestrial isopods of Belgium between 2011 and 2020. During these 10 years every 10 × 10 km² cell of the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) grid in Belgium (373 grid cells) was visited in search for terrestrial isopods. Inventories covered different habitat types in every grid cell such as forest, wetlands or stream sides, and urban areas. Most of the dataset records were obtained by hand-collection methods such as turning stones and dead wood, or by sieving litter and through casual observations. These inventories we

MEG frequency tagging reveals a grid-like code during attentional movements.

Grid-cells firing fields tile the environment with a 6-fold periodicity during both locomotion and visual exploration. Here, we tested, in humans, whether movements of covert attention elicit grid-like coding using frequency tagging. Participants observed visual trajectories presented sequentially at fixed rate, allowing different spatial periodicities (e.g., 4-, 6-, and 8-fold) to have corresponding temporal periodicities (e.g., 1, 1.5, and 2 Hz), thus resulting in distinct spectral responses. We found a higher response for the (grid-like) 6-fold periodicity and localized this effect in media

The Metric Slingshot: Navigational Reuse as Width-Optimal Structural Decoupling in Continual Learning.

The mammalian brain, most extensively studied in rodents and bats, solves an enormous variety of nonspatial cognitive tasks using neural circuitry, including grid cells, place cells, and hippocampal indexing, that originally evolved for physical navigation. We formalize the above observation within the local Urysohn width (LUW) framework for continual learning. The central construct is the metric slingshot, a learned embedding ϕ: X→Z that maps an arbitrary learning problem into a navigational latent space Z where pre-evolved contraction maps (grid cells) already provide the metric machinery, s

Computational Study on Effect of KCNQ1 P535T Mutation in a Cardiac Ventricular Tissue.

Heart diseases such as arrhythmia are the main causes of sudden death. Arrhythmias are typically caused by mutations in specific genes, damage in the cardiac tissue, or due to some chemical exposure. Arrhythmias caused due to mutation is called inherited arrhythmia. Induced arrhythmias are caused due to tissue damage or chemical exposure. Mutations in genes that encode ion channels of the cardiac cells usually result in (dysfunction) improper functioning of the channel. Improper functioning of the ion channel may lead to major changes in the action potential (AP) of the cardiac cells. This fur

The efficacy of a cellular approach to resilience-oriented operation of distribution grids based on eigenvectors of the Laplacian matrix.

This study aims to address the following research query: In the event of an imminent disaster poised to impact distribution grids, what constitutes the optimal course of action for the distribution system operators to keep the lights on? To address this challenge, we propose a cost-efficient cellular model for enhancing the resilience of smart distribution grids. This model prioritizes resilience in the face of natural disasters or other disruptions that could impact service delivery. This method benefits both grid operators and consumers by ensuring reliable power supply while minimizing ener

Failure to detect entorhinal grid-like signals in a passive navigation human fMRI study.

Grid cells in the human entorhinal cortex (EC) play a critical role in spatial navigation and memory. The EC is also one of the first regions affected by ageing and Alzheimer's disease. This pre-registered functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study aimed to detect grid-cell-like signals (GLS) in a passive virtual navigation task. Contrary to our hypotheses and previous findings, we did not observe significant GLS at a population level, even in younger participants. Further exploratory analyses investigated the impact of task-engagement, as inferred from object-location memory performan

Spatial Distribution and Conservation Prioritization of Medicinal Gymnosperms in China Using an Optimal Set-Cover Approach.

To elucidate the geographical distribution patterns and hotspots of medicinal gymnosperms in China, providing a scientific basis for formulating conservation strategies for this group, we compiled 17,999 occurrence records for 148 medicinal gymnosperm species native to China. Species were categorized into all, endemic, threatened, and nationally key protected medicinal gymnosperms groups. Distributions were analyzed across 943,100 × 100 km grid cells. Priority conservation areas were identified using an optimal algorithm based on an integer linear programming set-cover formulation, which minim

Grid partitioning image analysis of highly aggregative bacterium Acinetobacter sp. Tol 5.

Bacterial cell aggregation plays a fundamental role in surface colonization, stress tolerance, and interspecies metabolite exchange. Aggregation is assessed by simple tube-settling assays and also image analysis; however, approaches for quantitatively assessing the heterotypic and homotypic cell-cell interactions among more than two types of cells have been limited. In this study, we developed grid partitioning image analysis (GPIA), a simple workflow that quantifies the compositional heterogeneity of bacterial aggregates. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) images of fluorescently label

GriC and GriD constitute a carboxylic acid reductase involved in grixazone biosynthesis in Streptomyces griseus.

In grixazone biosynthesis by Streptomyces griseus, a key intermediate 3-amino-4-hydroxybenzoic acid (3,4-AHBA) is converted to another key intermediate 3-amino-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (3,4-AHBAL). Two genes griC and griD in the grixazone biosynthesis gene cluster were found to be responsible for this conversion, because disruption of each gene resulted in the extracellular accumulation of 3-acetylamino-4-hydroxybenzoic acid, a shunt product from 3,4-AHBA. Significant sequence similarity of GriC to AMP-binding proteins and of GriD to NAD(P)-dependent aldehyde dehydrogenases suggested that GriC an

Unmasking selective path integration deficits in Alzheimer's disease risk carriers.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) manifests with progressive memory loss and spatial disorientation. Neuropathological studies suggest early AD pathology in the entorhinal cortex (EC) of young adults at genetic risk for AD (APOE ε4-carriers). Because the EC harbors grid cells, a likely neural substrate of path integration (PI), we examined PI performance in APOE ε4-carriers during a virtual navigation task. We report a selective impairment in APOE ε4-carriers specifically when recruitment of compensatory navigational strategies via supportive spatial cues was disabled. A separate fMRI study revealed th

Development of non-spatial grid-like neural codes tracks inference and intelligence.

Piaget's theory posits that children develop structured knowledge schemas for inferring and assimilating new information, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. In 203 participants aged 8-25 years, we investigated how maturation of a two-dimensional (2D) knowledge map underpins inferential reasoning and knowledge assimilation. Grid-cell-like codes in the entorhinal cortex (EC) strengthened with age, reflecting schema representations in non-spatial conceptual spaces, and predicted improved inferential reasoning. These grid-like codes also supported the medial prefrontal cortex (mP

Emissions and air quality impacts of truck-to-rail freight modal shifts in the Midwestern United States.

We present an examination of the potential emissions and air quality benefits of shifting freight from truck to rail in the upper Midwestern United States. Using a novel, freight-specific emissions inventory (the Wisconsin Inventory of Freight Emissions, WIFE) and a three-dimensional Eulerian photochemical transport model (the Community Multiscale Air Quality Model, CMAQ), we quantify how specific freight mode choices impact ambient air pollution concentrations. Using WIFE, we developed two modal shift scenarios: one focusing on intraregional freight movements within the Midwest and a second o

An artificial insurance framework for a hydrogen-based microgrid to detect the advanced cyberattack model.

Microgrid systems have evolved based on renewable energies including wind, solar, and hydrogen to make the satisfaction of loads far from the main grid more flexible and controllable using both island- and grid-connected modes. Albeit microgrids can gain beneficial results in cost and energy schedules once operating in grid-connected mode, such systems are vulnerable to malicious attacks from the viewpoint of cybersecurity. With this in mind, this paper explores a novel advanced attack model named the false transferred data injection (FTDI) attack aiming to manipulatively alter the power flowi

Path Integration in Alzheimer's Disease: Orientation, Movement, and Theta Rhythmicity.

Path integration (PI), the ability to keep track of position and orientation from self-motion, is a sensitive cognitive marker of Alzheimer's disease. While entorhinal grid cells are central to PI, we focus here on the broader functional circuit supporting PI and the impact of Alzheimer's disease within it. This circuit includes orientation from head direction cells, landmark-based error correction, and signals encoding current or intended movement direction, which we suggest may rely on theta-modulated directional cells and theta sweeps in grid and place cell firing. The early vulnerability o

Drosophila photoreceptor tethering by a laminin-Eys scaffold.

Visual acuity in Drosophila requires precise photoreceptor alignment along the optical axis, maintained by longitudinal tension between a rigid cornea and a contractile retinal base. Here, we identify the rhabdomere caps-an extracellular matrix (ECM) structure that links rhabdomere tips to the integrin-decorated basal surfaces of overlying, lens-forming cone cells. Rhabdomere caps form perlecan-filled peaks shaped by a trapezoidal LanB1 (laminin) grid, which mirrors the inter-rhabdomeral space (IRS) contour. Our study revealed that Eys (eyes shut), a photoreceptor-secreted proteoglycan essenti

Minute-scale periodicity of neuronal firing in the human entorhinal cortex.

Grid cells in the entorhinal cortex demonstrate spatially periodic firing, thought to provide a spatial map on behaviorally relevant length scales. Whether such periodicity exists for behaviorally relevant time scales in the human brain remains unclear. We investigate neuronal firing during a temporally continuous experience by presenting 14 neurosurgical patients with a video while recording neuronal activity from multiple brain regions. We report on neurons that modulate their activity in a periodic manner across different time scales-from seconds to many minutes, most prevalently in the ent

Citizen science-based mapping of radiofrequency electromagnetic field exposure in Europe : A proof-of-concept validation study.

Characterising population-level radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) exposure from mobile telecommunications networks at fine spatial resolution has been limited by the cost and scale of conventional measurement methods. The ETAIN 5G Scientist app, developed within the ETAIN (Exposure To electromAgnetic fIelds and plaNetary health) project uses citizen science smartphone data to produce calibrated RF-EMF exposure maps for 4G/5G networks at 25 x 25 m 2 spatial resolution across Europe. As of 2026, the app had collected over 19 million measurements globally. We conducted a proof-of-conc
