Responding to grief-related needs in older adults: protocol for a community-based matched-care trial (GriefDiff).

BACKGROUND: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) affects a significant proportion of bereaved people and may be especially burdensome in later life, when cumulative losses, health problems, and reduced social resources can hinder adjustment. Grief support is often reactive, and many older adults do not access timely, appropriate care. GriefDiff will study a differentiated, community-based model that matches intervention intensity and format to individual risk and relational needs. METHODS: GriefDiff is a mixed-methods (QUAN→QUAL) protocol. The quantitative component is a three-arm, tiered, parallel-

Traumatic loss: Mental health consequences and implications for treatment and prevention.

Traumatic loss involves the loss of loved ones in the context of potentially traumatizing circumstances and is a commonly reported traumatic event. It may give rise to disturbed grief, called prolonged grief disorder (PGD) in ICD-11 and persistent complex bereavement disorder (PCBD) in DSM-5, combined with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. The recent inclusion of grief disorders in both DSM-5 and ICD-11 have spurred research on grief-related psychopathology. This special issue on traumatic loss includes 10 articles and two letters. Topics addressed include diagnostic criteri

Nursing Interventions in Primary Care for the Management of Maladaptive Grief: A Scoping Review.

Grief is a natural and self-limited adaptation process to a new reality that emerges after a significant loss (whether real or perceived), with a broad variety of manifestations that exert an impact on a grieving person's health. The study aim was to synthesize the evidence available about the interventions carried out by Primary Health Care nurses, by means of an individual approach to reduce maladaptive grief or maladaptive grief risk. A scoping review was conducted (November and December 2023) through searches in Medline, Cinahl, Web of Science, ProQuest and Scopus using MeSH terms combined

Perceptions of grief reactions in family members of incarcerated individuals: A vignette-based experiment.

We examined perceptions of individuals grieving the loss of a family member to incarceration. Participants (N = 1095) were randomized to a vignette that varied by race-ethnicity, crime type, and grief trajectory to assess their perceptions. Results indicated: (1) participants perceived prolonged grief as less appropriate than resilience; (2) Black family members grieving someone who committed a violent crime as more appropriate compared to White family members; and (3) women endorsed both grief trajectories as more appropriate and indicated greater comfort supporting the family member. Lastly,

Seasonal affective disorder, grief reaction, and adjustment disorder.

Seasonal affective disorder is a subtype of other affective disorders. The most studied treatment is light therapy, although second-generation antidepressants are also an option. Grief reactions are normal for patients experiencing loss, and primary care providers (PCPs) should be aware of both the expected course of grief and the more severe symptoms that indicate complex grief. Adjustment disorder is a time-limited abnormal response to a stressor. PCPs can manage patients with adjustment disorder by arranging counseling, screening for suicidality, assessing for substance abuse, and ruling ou

Sleep disturbances in bereavement: A systematic review.

Severe, persistent and disabling grief occurs among a sizable minority experiencing bereavement, with diagnostic manuals newly including complicated grief (CG) disorders. Sleep disturbances/disorders have been established as worsening affective and stress-related conditions. However, the role of sleep difficulties in bereavement and CG has not received similar scientific attention. We therefore conducted a systematic review with narrative syntheses on this topic to clarify the role of sleep in bereavement (PROSPERO: CRD42018093145). We searched PubMed, Web of Science and PsychInfo for peer-rev

Grief trajectories and long-term health effects in bereaved relatives: a prospective, population-based cohort study with ten-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Bereavement may affect the health of relatives, causing increased use of health care services and increased mortality shortly after the patient's death. However, the long-term consequences for those with a high level of grief symptoms remain largely unexplored. We aimed to investigate associations between grief symptom trajectories and four long-term health outcomes among relatives bereaved by natural death: contacts to general practice and mental health services, use of psychotropic prescription medication, and mortality, over a period of 3-10 years post-bereavement. METHOD: We a

Re-entry adjustment of cross cultural workers--the role of the GP.

BACKGROUND: Re-entry adjustment affects Australian cross cultural workers returning home; and for many, loss and grief issues arise. General practitioners are often the first point of contact in the health care system and are well placed to deal with these issues. OBJECTIVE: This article examines strategies that GPs can use to support the Australian cross cultural worker on re-entry, and focuses on recognition of re-entry adjustment, the role of loss and grief issues, and the importance of dealing with these issues. DISCUSSION: Australian cross cultural workers are valued members of their co

A Combined Approach to Understanding Grief: Integration of the Two-Track Model of Bereavement (TTMB) and the Dual Process Model of Coping With Bereavement (DPM).

The Two-Track Model of Bereavement (TTMB) and the Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement (DPM) are two central models in the field of thanatology, offering theoretical frameworks for understanding how individuals cope with loss. While the two models share several fundamental principles - most notably the conceptualization of grief as a bidimensional process involving the interplay between mourning and functional adaptation to life after loss - they differ in their components, underlying theoretical assumptions, and clinical emphases, yielding complementary strengths that together can en

An Integrative Model for Treating Romantic Breakup Crises as Traumatic Relational Loss: Synthesizing Grief-Oriented, Trauma-Focused, and Relational Approaches.

This paper presents an integrative therapeutic paradigm for treating individuals experiencing a psychological crisis following a romantic breakup, often viewed as both profound and life-altering. Conceptualizing the breakup experience as involving elements of loss, trauma, and relational rupture, the proposed model integrates principles and interventions drawn from grief-and-loss therapies, trauma-informed approaches, and key principles from relational psychodynamic psychotherapy, as well as humanistic approaches. Based on the common factors model of psychotherapy integration, the model's core

Perinatal depression and anxiety symptoms as mediators between grief and PTSD: the moderated effect of social support.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress symptoms are prevalent mental phenomenon in women with previous perinatal loss due to high grief, high perinatal depression and anxiety or low social support. Although posttraumatic stress symptoms are known to have serious negative implications for women with previous perinatal loss, families and society, the mechanism through which it functions is less clear. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the moderated mediating effect of social support on perinatal anxiety and depression and its associations with grief and posttraumatic stress symptoms in

Co-occurrence of approach and avoidance in prolonged grief: a latent class analysis.

Background: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) has been included in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 Text Revision (DSM-5-TR). Loss-related avoidance behavior perpetuates grief and effective interventions for prolonged grief symptoms target such avoidance behavior. Yet, behaviors characterized by approach of loss-related cues (i.e. rumination, yearning, proximity seeking) are also implicated in prolonged grief reactions. Objective: To solve this paradox, we will test the Approach Avoidance Processing Hypothesis, wh

Through the nurse's lens: Bereavement photography and creative interventions in nursing care.

Art has long supported healing, and, in nursing, creative practices such as music, writing, and photography enhance holistic care by fostering connection, emotional well-being, and comfort during end-of-life moments. Bereavement photography, particularly in neonatal and pediatric settings, provides families with a tangible way to honor and remember their child, while also helping nurses and caregivers process their grief. Research shows that images are deeply valued as keepsakes of life and love, and when offered with ethical, culturally sensitive, and trauma-informed approaches, photography b

Homicide bereavement counseling: a survey of providers.

The opinions of 116 homicide bereavement caregivers of interventions recommended for survivors were solicited. Presenting problems, optimum treatment framework, and reasons for treatment failure were also surveyed. Respondents preferred methods associated with crisis intervention and grief counseling. Other clinical techniques were rated as moderately helpful, except family therapy, which was highly rated. Suppression of trauma imagery was deemed harmful to survivors, though diversion was recommended often in cases of complicated grief. Caregivers who are themselves survivors appeared more sen

NEO-five factor personality traits as predictors of response to two forms of group psychotherapy.

The relationships between patient personality variables and outcome for 107 psychiatric outpatients with complicated grief who completed either interpretive or supportive short-term group therapy were investigated. The personality variables were assessed prior to treatment with the NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). For patients in both forms of therapy, extraversion, conscientiousness, and openness were directly associated with favorable treatment outcome. In contrast, neuroticism was inversely related to favorable outcome for patients in both forms of therapy. Agreeableness was directly re

Mobile app for prolonged grief among bereaved parents: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Bereaved parents, who have lost a child, have an elevated risk to develop mental health problems, yet, few studies have evaluated the effect of psychosocial interventions developed for bereaved parents. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), both face to face or digitally delivered, has shown to be an effective intervention for prolonged grief symptoms. Self-help mobile apps offer various advantages and studies show improved mental health after app interventions. No app has yet been evaluated targeting prolonged grief in bereaved parents. Therefore, the aim of this planned study is

From loss to meaning: therapeutic group processes in parental grief after pediatric cancer.

BACKGROUND: The death of a child due to cancer constitutes one of the most devastating experiences for parents and is associated with profound emotional, relational, and existential consequences. Pediatric psycho-oncology highlights the need for interventions that go beyond symptom reduction and address grief as a complex process involving emotional expression, social connection, and meaning reconstruction. However, qualitative research exploring parents' lived experiences of grief-focused group therapy remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the impact of therapeutic group in

Mobile-Based Ecological Momentary Interventions for Grief in China and Switzerland: Protocol for a Collaborative and Iterative Qualitative App Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Bereavement is a common and inevitable part of life. However, it is also difficult and disruptive. Prolonged grief disorder has recently been added to the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision, and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fifth Edition). Grief is a deeply cultural experience; however, most research about grief and grief intervention is conducted in Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) countries. Support for grief is often limited and difficult to access. We propose that ecological momentary intervention
