INTODUCTION: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive breast cancer subtype that lacks hormone receptors and HER2 amplification, limiting targeted therapy options. Chemotherapeutics like cisplatin and taxol are commonly used but lack selectivity, often causing harsh side effects. These limitations have led to increased interest in natural health products (NHPs) as complementary treatments due to their potential anticancer benefits and lower toxicity. Black Maitake mushroom (Grifola frondosa), used in traditional Chinese medicine, contains polysaccharides with reported anticancer a

Grifola frondosa has garnered significant popularity as an edible mushroom attributable to its exceptional taste and nutritional benefits. This study isolated APPLRP, a potent ACE-inhibitory peptide, from the alcohol-soluble fraction of Grifola frondosa. The underlying mechanisms of APPLRP in antihypertension were explored through computational chemistry, cell experiments, and zebrafish model. Results demonstrated that APPLRP was an active competitive ACE inhibitor (IC50 = 29.93 μM) that could bind to the active pocket S2 and S1' of ACE. APPLRP exhibited resistance to pepsin and pancreatin dig

Polysaccharide from Grifola frondosa is an excellent metal-ion chelating agent owing to its distinctive structure and outstanding functional activities. Our previous research has successfully synthesized novel organic chromium derived from the chelation ofG. frondosapolysaccharide-chromium (III) [GFP-Cr(III)]. The purpose of present research was to reveal the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic mechanism of GFP-Cr(III), and its relationship with the modulation of intestinal microflora. Successful fabrication of GFP-Cr(III) was verified by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), powder X-ray diffraction (

The hexapeptide APPLRP from the edible Grifola frondosa mushroom has been verified to possess significant ACE inhibitory activity and ameliorates vascular remodeling. However, in vivo effects have not been systematically investigated. The present study aimed to explore the in vivo mechanisms of antihypertensive peptide APPLRP. The APPLRP significantly reduced both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in SHRs and improved disruptions of the renin-angiotensin system in circulation, as evidenced by decreased serum Ang II levels and ACE activity. APPLRP intervention ameliorated the aortic wall th

This study describes a simple, cost-effective method for cyanide quantification in mushrooms. This involves an alkaline/SDS extraction producer to disrupt the cell wall while stabilizing volatile hydrogen cyanide as the cyanide ion (CN-) under alkaline conditions, which is subsequently recovered using Conway diffusion and quantified via pyridine-pyrazolone colorimetric analysis. This method demonstrated high sensitivity, with a limit of detection of 1.36 μg/g and limit of quantification of 4.82 μg/g. The spike recovery tests yielded an average recovery of 66-84 % (n = 9) at 10 μg/g CN- and a h

UNLABELLED: It is known that the violation of one or more functions of the liver, where the basic biochemical processes take place, is reflected in the functional state of many organs and systems, causing severe consequences. For the effective treatment of the hepatobiliary system diseases the drugs from fungi and plant materials are promising, the ingredients of which are close to natural metabolites, have different mechanisms of hepatoprotective action and, in general, can have a positive effect on liver function.
AIM: The aim of the research was to investigate the hepatoprotective properti

BACKGROUND: Commercially available edible mushroom polysaccharide (EMP) products often contain impurities such as maltodextrin, proteins and polyphenols, which interfere with accurate quality evaluation. This study aimed to establish a pretreatment protocol to purify these products and investigate the structure-activity relationships of their antioxidant activities.
RESULTS: Physicochemical analysis revealed that maltodextrin interfered with polysaccharide quantification. A pretreatment protocol using glucoamylase for maltodextrin removal and potassium ferrocyanide/zinc acetate for deproteini

Medicinal mushrooms have documented effects against different diseases, including infections and inflammatory disorders. The related Basidiomycota Agaricus blazei Murill (AbM), Hericium erinaceus (HE), and Grifola frondosa (GF) have been shown to exert antimicrobial activity against viral agents, Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and parasites in vitro and in vivo. Since the mechanism is immunomodulatory and not antibiotical, the mushrooms should be active against multi-drug resistant microbes as well. Moreover, since these Basidiomycota also have anti-inflammatory properties, they may

Mushrooms have long been used not only as food but also for the treatment of various ailments. Although at its infancy, accumulated evidence suggested that culinary-medicinal mushrooms may play an important role in the prevention of many age-associated neurological dysfunctions, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Therefore, efforts have been devoted to a search for more mushroom species that may improve memory and cognition functions. Such mushrooms include Hericium erinaceus, Ganoderma lucidum, Sarcodon spp., Antrodia camphorata, Pleurotus giganteus, Lignosus rhinocerotis, Grifol

Insulin resistance is the major factor involved in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. Although the oral drug metformin (MH) is widely used to reduce hyperglycemia, it is associated with adverse effects. Therefore, there is an urgent need to search for safe and natural foods that do not cause adverse effects as alternatives to commercial drugs. In this study, the active substances from Spirulina platensis, Grifola frondosa, Panax ginseng, and chromium-rich yeast were used to obtain Spirulina functional formulations (SFFs), and its therapeutic effects on mice with glycolipid metabolism disorde

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are a heterogeneous group of immune cells that play a central role in regulating host immune responses during fungal infections. Their recruitment is mediated by pathogen recognition receptors, particularly Dectin-1 and CARD9 signaling, which promote the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and IL-1β. Once activated, MDSCs suppress T-cell and natural killer cell functions through immunosuppressive cytokines like IL-10 and TGF-β, as well as enzymes such as arginase-1 and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO-1). This review explores the role of MDSCs

Osteoporosis is a metabolic disease of the skeleton characterized by a low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue structure, leading to increased fragility and susceptibility to fractures. It is often referred to as the "silent killer of bones" because it progresses without symptoms until a bone fracture occurs. Osteoporosis is a serious health problem, especially in aging societies, leading to fractures, limited mobility, and a decreased quality of life. Osteoporosis prevention through dietary modification should be the first step in protecting bone health before implementing any form of

BACKGROUND: Agaricus blazei Murill (AbM) is an edible Brazilian mushroom that has been used in traditional medicine for a range of diseases. It has been shown to have anti-infection and anti-tumor properties in the mouse, which are due to induction of Th1 responses. On the other hand, IgE-mediated allergy is induced by a Th2 response.
OBJECTIVE: Since according to the Th1/Th2 paradigm an increased Th1 response may promote a reduced Th2 response, the aim was to examine whether AbM had anti-allergy effects.
METHODS: A mouse model for allergy was employed, in which the mice were immunized s.c.

Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are common viral illnesses whose burden increases with age-related declines in innate immunity. Maitake mushrooms (Grifola frondosa) have immunomodulatory properties, but evidence in healthy humans, particularly regarding age-related innate immune responses, remains limited. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, healthy young adults (18-20 years) and middle-aged/older adults (40-85 years) consumed bread containing one of two maitake strains (Y10M or C5304) or a placebo daily for 11 weeks (young adults) or 18 weeks (middle-aged/ol
