Opium addiction in patients with coronary artery disease: a grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: There are widespread misconceptions about the positive effects of opium on coronary artery disease (CAD). Thus, we performed a study to explore the opium addiction process contributing factors among CAD patients using a grounded theory approach. METHODS: The sample comprised 30 addicted CAD patients and their family members, physicians, nurses and friends. Purposive and theoretical sampling was employed; semi-structured interviews were conducted. Coding and constant comparative analysis techniques were as proposed by Strauss and Corbin (1998). RESULTS: The core category was 'Figh

Pathways to late-life problematic gambling in seniors: a grounded theory approach.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To develop a grounded theory on how older adults, who may not have previously experienced gambling issues, come to develop gambling problems in later life. DESIGN AND METHODS: Through semistructured in-depth interviews with 31 adults aged 56-85, routes that led the current sample of older adults to develop late-life gambling problems were identified and mapped into coherent pathways using a constructivist grounded theory methodology. RESULTS: Three main pathways to late-life problematic gambling were identified, all linked with a common theme of isolation: a grief pathw

The relationship between shame, perfectionism and Anorexia Nervosa: A grounded theory study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore the potential relationship between shame, perfectionism and Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and their impact on recovery from AN. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 people currently accessing services for AN. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using constructivist-grounded theory methodology. RESULTS: A model was developed which found a vicious cycle between shame and perfectionism. Participants tried to alleviate their feelings of shame by striving for perfectionism, however failing caused them more shame. Participants who

The Virtuous Circle: A Grounded Theory Exploration of the Good Lives Model.

Sexual offenses evoke strong emotional responses and frequently elicit demands from society that offenders be indefinitely incarcerated or treated until they are deemed safe, which may impact the provision of therapeutic treatment for offenders. However, in recent years, there has been a proposal to move toward a positive, strengths-based treatment approach, namely the Good Lives Model (GLM). The present study used semi-structured interviews and a constructivist grounded theory approach to examine the experience of 13 men who were voluntarily engaging in or had completed a GLM community-based

Learning to live with a hand nerve disorder: A constructed grounded theory.

STUDY DESIGN: Grounded theory. INTRODUCTION: The broader perspective of health offered by the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health has had a significant bearing on how we view the measurement of health outcomes after surgical or therapy interventions for peripheral nerve disorders affecting the hand. The value of the patient's perspective is now recognized and outcomes which reflect this are being advocated in the clinical management and support of this population. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This qualitative study sought to explore the liv

Understanding bladder management on a palliative care unit: a grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: Research regarding factors associated with nursing-initiated changes to bladder management at end-of-life is sparse. OBJECTIVES: To explore the process of Palliative Care Unit (PCU) nurses' approach to bladder management changes. METHODS: Nursing staff from one PCU in London, Canada were interviewed regarding bladder management care practices. A constructivist grounded theory was generated. RESULTS: Four interconnected themes emerged: humanity (compassionate support of patients); journey (making the most of a finite timeline); health condition (illness, functional decline); and

How parents manage the risk of child sexual abuse: a grounded theory.

The aim of this study is to understand how parents manage the risk of child sexual abuse, including prevention as well as early intervention and detection strategies. Using a social constructivist theoretical foundation and grounded theory methods, qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with Australian parents between 2006 and 2008. Based on the data, a balance theory was developed, which explains how parents attempt to balance the type of information given to children in order to protect their children from sexual abuse without scaring them as well as how parents manage sexual boundar

Grounded theory as a method for research in speech and language therapy.

BACKGROUND: The use of qualitative methodologies in speech and language therapy has grown over the past two decades, and there is now a body of literature, both generally describing qualitative research, and detailing its applicability to health practice(s). However, there has been only limited profession-specific discussion of qualitative methodologies and their potential application to speech and language therapy. AIM: To describe the methodology of grounded theory, and to explain how it might usefully be applied to areas of speech and language research where theoretical frameworks or model

Adaptation before and one year after liver transplantation: a longitudinal grounded theory study.

INTRODUCTION: Liver transplant recipients undergo emotional, social and existential changes. Adaptation begins before surgery and continues long after discharge. However, no longitudinal grounded theory study has described this process across the transplantation trajectory. This study explored how individuals adapted by addressing their main concerns. METHODS: Twelve adults (mean age 49.3 years, range 25-70) were interviewed pre- and post-transplantation. Data collection and analysis proceeded concurrently using Charmaz's constructivist grounded theory and the constant comparative method. RE

Value Co-Creation Between Nurses and Generative Artificial Intelligence: A Grounded Theory Study.

BACKGROUND: The role of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in nursing is increasingly shifting from a support tool toward a collaborative partner. However, the mechanisms underlying nurse-GenAI value co-creation (N-GAIVC) remain undertheorized. AIM: To develop a theoretical framework for N-GAIVC. METHODS: This study used a Straussian grounded theory approach. Between January and April 2026, 27 clinical nurses and nurse managers from hospitals across China were recruited using purposive, snowball, and theoretical sampling. Semistructured in-depth interviews and online textual data fro

Help-Seeking for Suicidality Among Rural LGBTQ+ Youth: A Constructivist Grounded Theory Study.

Rural gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) youth face heightened suicidality risk due to social and structural health inequities, including isolation, stigma, and inaccessible mental health services. However, little is known about how LGBTQ+ youth seek help when experiencing suicidality. This constructivist grounded theory study examines the help-seeking processes of rural LGBTQ+ youth experiencing suicidality. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with 15 rural-based LGBTQ+ youth (aged 16-25) in Quebec, Canada, we inductively developed the Theory Ma

Nurses' perspectives of an environment of optimum mental health: a grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: The Government's aspiration to make Kenya a middle-income country and achieve the United Nations' sustainable development goal 3, 'good health and well-being', are threatened by poor quality of mental health services. Environment and lack of a conceptual model of nursing to guide care were some of the reasons that were attributed to poor quality of mental health services. The purpose of the study was to discover and describe an appropriate conceptual model of mental health nursing practice. This paper describes the environment which is one of the metaparadigms of a conceptual model

Mechanisms of Change for Children Participating in Therapeutic Horse Riding: A Grounded Theory.

AIM: To develop a model for understanding mechanisms of change in health outcomes for riders with disabilities participating in therapeutic horse riding (THR). METHODS: Using grounded theory methods we collected and analyzed data from interviews with 16 child riders and 18 caregivers, teachers and primary therapists, and from participant-observation during THR sessions. RESULTS: The central concept underpinning the model illustrating mechanisms of change was "gaining the tools to go on." Riders' experiences suggested the THR landscape (i.e., "where the tools are gathered") allowed for an exp

Promoting participation in healthcare situations for children with JIA: a grounded theory study.

Children's right to participate in their own healthcare has increasingly become highlighted in national and international research as well as in government regulations. Nevertheless, children's participation in healthcare is unsatisfactorily applied in praxis. There is a growing body of research regarding children's participation, but research from the children's own perspective is scarce. The aim of this study was thus to explore the experiences and preferences for participation in healthcare situations among children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) as a foundation for creating strat

Comfort vs risk: a grounded theory about female adolescent behaviour in the sun.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To generate a grounded theory about female adolescent behaviour in the sun. BACKGROUND: Nurses have key roles in health promotion and skin cancer prevention. Adolescents' resistance to sun safety messages and their vulnerability to sunburn are of concern internationally. Understanding why young women do as they do in the sun may enhance skin cancer prevention, but their behaviour has not been explained before in the UK. DESIGN: The study incorporated a qualitative grounded theory design using the approach of Glaser. METHODS: Qualitative data were gleaned from group and
