Outbreak of cryptosporidiosis associated with a disinfected groundwater supply.

In an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis in Warrington, a town in North-West England, 47 cases were recorded between November 1992 and February 1993, most within the first month. There was a strong statistical association between cases and residence in an area supplied from two groundwater sources. In a case-control study, a strong association between having drunk unboiled tap water from these sources, and a dose-response relationship were found. Oocysts were not detected in the water supply. During very heavy rainfall one source of water was found to drain surface water directly from a field conta

Vivianite recovery from anaerobic groundwater reverse osmosis concentrate.

To meet the increasing drinking water demand, membrane technologies are used to treat previously unavailable water sources. A byproduct of membrane technologies is the concentrate stream, containing valuable resources in higher concentrations. We studied the recovery of iron from different groundwater matrices and anaerobic reverse osmosis (RO) concentrates via precipitation of vivianite and the co-removal of other common groundwater divalent cations Mn2+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ during vivianite precipitation. The formed precipitates were characterized using X-Ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Micr

Magnetic nanomaterials assisted nanobiocatalysis to abate groundwater pollution.

Magnetic nanoparticles are of great interest for research as they have a wide range of applications in biotechnology, environmental science, and biomedicine. Magnetic nanoparticles are ideal for magnetic separation, improving catalysis's speed and reusability by immobilizing enzymes. Nanobiocatalysis allows the removal of persistent pollutants in a viable, cost-effective and eco-friendly manner, transforming several hazardous compounds in water into less toxic derivatives. Iron oxide and graphene oxide are the preferred materials used to confer nanomaterials their magnetic properties for this

Hexavalent Chromium Sources and Distribution in California Groundwater.

Groundwater resources in California represent a confluence of high-risk factors for hexavalent chromium contamination as a result of industrial activities, natural geology, and, potentially, land use. Here, we examine state-wide links in California between groundwater Cr(VI) concentrations and chemicals that provide signatures for source attribution. In environmental monitoring wells, Cr(VI) had the highest co-occurrence and also clustered with 1,4-dioxane and several chlorinated hydrocarbons indicative of the metal plating industry. Additionally, hotspots of Cr(VI) co-occurring with bromoform

High (36)Cl/Cl ratios in Chernobyl groundwater.

After the explosion of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in April 1986, contaminated material was buried in shallow trenches within the exclusion zone. A (90)Sr plume was evidenced downgradient of one of these trenches, trench T22. Due to its conservative properties, (36)Cl is investigated here as a potential tracer to determine the maximal extent of the contamination plume from the trench in groundwater. (36)Cl/Cl ratios measured in groundwater, trench soil water and leaf leachates are 1-5 orders of magnitude higher than the theoretical natural (36)Cl/Cl ratio. This contamination occurred aft

Arsenic removal from natural groundwater using cupric oxide.

Groundwater is a main source of drinking water for some rural areas. People in these rural areas are potentially at risk from elevated levels of arsenic (As) due to a lack of water treatment facilities. The objectives of this study were to (1) measure As concentrations in approximately 50 groundwater samples from rural domestic wells in the western United States, (2) explore the potential of cupric oxide (CuO) particles in removal of As from groundwater samples under natural conditions (i.e., without adding competing anions and adjusting the pH or oxidation state), and (3) determine the effect

Solubility enhancement effect of cyclodexin on groundwater pollutants.

Cyclodextrin (CD) molecules are polycyclic glucose oligomers that have a hydrophilic exterior and a hydrophobic cavity. This structure provides CD the characteristic of enhancing the solubility of groundwater pollutants. The degree to which CD increases the apparent aqueous solubility of certain chemicals has been defined as the solubility enhancement factor (SEF). In this study, a novel and experimentally simple method has been developed to determine the SEF, which can be mathematically obtained by ratio of apparent and traditional Henry's law constants. The effects of temperature and CD conc

Bioremediation of trichloroethylene contaminated groundwater using anaerobic process.

Anaerobic remediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) contaminated soil and groundwater was studied in laboratory setups. In this process fermentation of polymeric organic materials (POMS) produced volatile fatty acids (VFAs) that were electron donors in reductive dechlorination of TCE. Shredded peanut shell was selected as low cost POM and the experiments were set up in 500 ml Erlenmeyer flasks. In the setups, approximately 25 mg of leachate contaminated soil was used as the main source of microorganisms and about 5 g of shredded peanut shell (0.5-2.36 mm) was added to produce VFAs for dechlorinat

A reactor model for pulsed pumping groundwater remediation.

A hybrid in situ bioremediation/pulsed pumping strategy has been developed to cost effectively remediate a carbon tetrachloride plume in Schoolcraft, Michigan. The pulsed pumping system uses a line of alternating injection and extraction wells perpendicular to the direction of natural groundwater flow. The wells pump periodically to clean the recirculation zone between adjacent wells. During the pump-off phase, natural groundwater flow brings new contaminant into the recirculation zone. The wells are pumped again prior to breakthrough of contaminant from the recirculation zone. A computational

Deficiency and excess of groundwater iodine and their health associations.

More than two billion people worldwide have suffered thyroid disorders from either iodine deficiency or excess. By creating the national map of groundwater iodine throughout China, we reveal the spatial responses of diverse health risks to iodine in continental groundwater. Greater non-carcinogenic risks relevant to lower iodine more likely occur in the areas of higher altitude, while those associated with high groundwater iodine are concentrated in the areas suffered from transgressions enhanced by land over-use and intensive anthropogenic overexploitation. The potential roles of groundwater

Occurrence and distribution of organic and inorganic pollutants in groundwater.

Depletion of groundwater resources and continued decline in overall groundwater quality is a cause of concern because large human population around the world uses groundwater as a source of drinking water. This paper presents a comprehensive review of studies published in the year 2018 that documented issues of groundwater pollution, sources, and distribution reported from across the world due to anthropogenic, hydroclimatogical, and natural processes. Groundwater pollution due to organic contaminants focuses particularly on pesticides, herbicides, and contaminants of emerging concern. Polluti

[A study on the veterinary antibiotics contamination in groundwater of Jiaxing].

Liquid chromatography and tandem mass (LC-MS/MS) followed with solid-phase extraction (SPE) was developed for simultaneously determining four classes (tetracyclines, quinolones, macrolides and sulfonamides) of ten commonly used veterinary antibiotics in groundwater of Jiaxing city, an important pig breeding base in the Yangtze River Delta region. Samples were taken from 10 typical rural river sections and 21 main urban river sections. Results revealed severe pollution existed in the rural river environment. The total concentration of ten antibiotics was as high as 65.6-467.0 ng x L(-1), among

In situ sequenced bioremediation of mixed contaminants in groundwater.

A mixture of chlorinated solvents (about 0.5-10 mg/l), including tetrachloroethene (PCE) and carbon tetrachloride (CT), together with a petroleum hydrocarbon, toluene (TOL), were introduced into a 24 m long x 2 m wide x 3 m deep isolated section (henceforth called a gate) of the Borden aquifer and subjected to sequential in situ treatment. An identical section of aquifer was similarly contaminated and allowed to self-remediate by natural attenuation, thus serving as a control. The control presents a rare opportunity to critically assess the performance of the treatment systems, and represents

Seasonal variations in groundwater arsenic occurrence, speciation, and human health risks under contrasting groundwater-level conditions in an arid irrigated aquifer.

Groundwater arsenic contamination in the northern Tianshan Mountains of Xinjiang, China, threatens regional drinking-water safety, yet its seasonal response to groundwater-level fluctuations remains poorly understood. We integrated UNMIX-based hydrochemical factor analysis, hydrogeochemical modeling, and Monte Carlo simulation to investigate arsenic occurrence, mobilization, speciation, and health risks. Results revealed high-arsenic groundwater (>10 μg L-1) in weakly alkaline and reducing confined aquifers at depths of 100-300 m. UNMIX resolved a hydrochemical factor with high loadings of As

Biochar/Biopolymer Composites for Potential In Situ Groundwater Remediation.

This study explores the use of pine wood biochar (BC) waste gasified at 950 °C as fillers in polymer matrices to create BC@biopolymer composites with perspectives in groundwater remediation. Four biochar samples underwent different sieving and grinding processes and were extensively characterized via UV-Vis, FTIR, and FESEM-EDS, highlighting the fact that that BCs are essentially graphitic in nature with a sponge-like morphology. The grinding process influences the particle size, reducing the specific surface area by about 30% (evaluated by BET). The adsorption performances of raw BC were vali

Carbon Nanotube Based Groundwater Remediation: The Case of Trichloroethylene.

Adsorption of chlorinated organic contaminants (COCs) on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been gaining ground as a remedial platform for groundwater treatment. Applications depend on our mechanistic understanding of COC adsorption on CNTs. This paper lays out the nature of competing interactions at play in hybrid, membrane, and pure CNT based systems and presents results with the perspective of existing gaps in design strategies. First, current remediation approaches to trichloroethylene (TCE), the most ubiquitous of the COCs, is presented along with examination of forces contributing to adsorption

Groundwater arsenic contamination in Bangladesh-21 Years of research.

Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE), Bangladesh first identified their groundwater arsenic contamination in 1993. But before the international arsenic conference in Dhaka in February 1998, the problem was not widely accepted. Even in the international arsenic conference in West-Bengal, India in February, 1995, representatives of international agencies in Bangladesh and Bangladesh government attended the conference but they denied the groundwater arsenic contamination in Bangladesh. School of Environmental Studies (SOES), Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India first identified arsenic p

Field assessment of nanoscale bimetallic particles for groundwater treatment.

A field demonstration was performed in which nanoscale bimetallic (Fe/Pd) particles were gravity-fed into groundwater contaminated bytrichloroethene and other chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons at a manufacturing site. With diameters on the order of 100-200 nm, the nanoparticles are uniquely suited to rapidly degrade redox-amenable contaminants and for optimal subsurface delivery and dispersion. Approximately 1.7 kg of the nanoparticles was fed into the test area over a 2-day period, resulting in minimal clogging of the injection well. The test area was located within a well-characterized regi

Prevalence and whole-genome sequencing characterization of Salmonella in urban karst groundwater and predominantly groundwater-fed surface waters for serotypes and antimicrobial resistance.

Karst aquifers provide a significant source of drinking water around the world; however, they are prone to bacterial contamination. We investigated the prevalence, serotypes, and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) of Salmonella in urban karst groundwater and groundwater-fed surface waters. Weekly water samples (n = 443) were collected from nine groundwater sites and the Barren River in Bowling Green, KY. Additionally, cross-sectional samples were collected from 45 sites, including groundwaters and two rivers, in Tampa, FL. Salmonella was detected in 14.5% of Bowling Green samples resulting

Waste-water impacts on groundwater: Cl/Br ratios and implications for arsenic pollution of groundwater in the Bengal Basin and Red River Basin, Vietnam.

Across West Bengal and Bangladesh, concentrations of Cl in much groundwater exceed the natural, upper limit of 10 mg/L. The Cl/Br mass ratios in groundwaters range up to 2500 and scatter along mixing lines between waste-water and dilute groundwater, with many falling near the mean end-member value for waste-water of 1561 at 126 mg/L Cl. Values of Cl/Br exceed the seawater ratio of 288 in uncommon NO(3)-bearing groundwaters, and in those containing measurable amounts of salt-corrected SO(4) (SO(4) corrected for marine salt). The data show that shallow groundwater tapped by tube-wells in the Ben
