Modulating the spectroscopy and dynamics of a proton-transfer dye by functionalizing with phenyl groups.

Molecules undergoing excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) reactions are among the most interesting systems from spectroscopic and photophysical viewpoints. These molecules can be further functionalized with electron donating or accepting groups, inducing intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) events, which might be coupled to the ESIPT ones, conferring them with different spectroscopic and photophysical properties, which can be essential to implement the related materials in many key scientific and technological fields. Here, we report new benzimidazole derivatives that are functionalized with a

Symmetry-based derivation of neuronal membrane dynamics: a Lie group approach to action potential generation.

We derive the nonlinear dynamics of neuronal membrane potential from fundamental physical symmetries using Lie group theory. Starting from three experimentally verified symmetries [rotational invariance of paramagnetic ion (Ca2 +, Na+) orientation producing SO(2), scale invariance of membrane conductance ratios producing ℝ, and time-translation symmetry producing ℝ], we prove that these independent physical observations uniquely determine the semidirect product group structure G = SO(2) ⋉ℝ2, as established in Theorem 1.4. The structure constants (γ1 = 1.58 V/s, γ2 = 0.025 V-1, γ3 = 0.003) deri

Better together: Group-level social dynamics predict individuals' psychological adjustment during a major life transition.

Establishing new social connections is critical during the transition to university, especially for students who have moved far from home. We examined how students' one-on-one connections, along with the dynamics of their social groups, related to their adjustment across a school year. Participants were 717 first-year international undergraduates at a Canadian university who participated in a transition program involving assignment to orientation groups of 20-30 students. Cross-sectionally, students' individual-level social network measures were associated with better adjustment at the start o

Structural dynamics and interactions of Xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group A (XPA98-210) with damaged DNA.

Nucleotide excision repair (NER) in higher organisms repair massive DNA abrasions caused by ultraviolet rays, and various mutagens, where Xeroderma pigmentosum group A (XPA) protein is known to be involved in damage recognition step. Any mutations in XPA cause classical Xeroderma pigmentosum disease. The extent to which XPA is required in the NER is still unclear. Here, we present the comparative study on the structural and conformational changes in globular DNA binding domain of XPA98-210 in DNA bound and DNA free state. Atomistic molecular dynamics simulation was carried out for both XPA98-2

Population dynamics of five anopheles species of the Hyrcanus group in northern Gyeonggi-do, Korea.

To investigate the population densities of potential malaria vectors, Anopheles species were collected by light traps in malaria endemic areas, Paju and Gimpo, Gyeonggi-do of Korea. Five Anopheles Hyrcanus sibling species (An. sinensis, An. pullus, An. lesteri, An. kleini, and An. belenrae) were identified by PCR. The predominant species, An. pullus was collected during the late spring and mid-summer, while higher population consists of An. sinensis were collected from late summer to early autumn. These 2 species accounted for 92.1% of all Anopheles mosquitoes collected, while the other 3 spec

Probing Protein-DNA Conformational Dynamics in DNA Damage Recognition: Xeroderma Pigmentosum Group A Stabilizes the Damaged DNA-RPA14 Complex by Controlling Conformational Fluctuation Dynamics.

DNA damage inside biological systems may result in diseases like cancer. One of the major repairing mechanisms is the nucleotide excision repair (NER) that recognizes and repairs the damage caused by several internal and external exposures, such as DNA double-strand distortion due to the chemical modifications. Recognition of lesions is the initial stage of the DNA damage repair, which occurs with the help of several proteins like Replication Protein A (RPA) and Xeroderma Pigmentosum group A (XPA). The recognition process involves complex conformational dynamics of the proteins. Studying the d

The detection of age groups by dynamic gait outcomes using machine learning approaches.

Prevalence of gait impairments increases with age and is associated with mobility decline, fall risk and loss of independence. For geriatric patients, the risk of having gait disorders is even higher. Consequently, gait assessment in the clinics has become increasingly important. The purpose of the present study was to classify healthy young-middle aged, older adults and geriatric patients based on dynamic gait outcomes. Classification performance of three supervised machine learning methods was compared. From trunk 3D-accelerations of 239 subjects obtained during walking, 23 dynamic gait outc

The Duffing oscillator: a model for the dynamics of the neuronal groups comprising the transient evoked potential.

Thirty years ago Zeeman conjectured that the dynamics of the EEG might be modeled by the "equation of motion" of a Duffing oscillator, a pendulum with a nonlinear, cubic, restoring force. In this study the idea is extended to the evoked potential (EP). A transient sensory EP reflects activity from several neuronal groups, pools of neurons that fire in synchrony, with voltage-time curves that overlap appreciably. When the dynamics of each neuronal group is modeled by a Duffing oscillator, multi-electrode transient VEPs are well predicted. Predictions based on Duffing oscillator dynamics are sub

Cluster dynamics in a two-group Stuart-Landau model analyzed by the second-order phase reduction.

We analyze cluster states in an ensemble of Stuart-Landau oscillators with two subpopulations of different frequencies. Our main goal is to compare the descriptions of the system's dynamics obtained via the standard first-order phase approximation and the second-order phase reduction. We demonstrate that the second-order model not only provides quantitative improvements in the description but also reveals new dynamical states not present in the standard Kuramoto theory. In particular, it describes bistability of synchronous states in the minimal setup of two coupled oscillators and the existen

Differential Association of Viral Dynamics With Disease Severity Depending on Patients' Age Group in COVID-19.

Despite a clear association of patient's age with COVID-19 severity, there has been conflicting data on the association of viral load with disease severity. Here, we investigated the association of viral load dynamics with patient's age and severity of COVID-19 using a set of respiratory specimens longitudinally collected (mean: 4.8 times/patient) from 64 patients with broad distribution of clinical severity and age during acute phase. Higher viral burden was positively associated with inflammatory responses, as assessed by IL-6, C-reactive protein, and lactate dehydrogenase levels in patients

Effect of arterial occlusion on responses of group III and IV afferents to dynamic exercise.

Our laboratory has shown previously that a low level of dynamic exercise induced by electrical stimulation of the mesencephalic locomotor region (MLR) stimulated group III and IV muscle afferents in decerebrate unanesthetized cats (C. M. Adreani, J. M. Hill, and M. P. Kaufman. J. Appl. Physiol. 83: 1811-1817, 1997). In the present study, we have extended these findings by examining the effect of occluding the arterial supply to the dynamically exercising muscles on the afferents' responses to MLR stimulation. In decerebrate cats, we found that arterial occlusion increased the responsiveness to

[Dynamic measurement of pressure distribution on the foot sole of diabetic patients and a comparison group].

A new method known as pedography enables the measurement of plantar pressure while walking. Different areas on the sole can be separately analyzed by means of a personal computer. We studied plantar pressure in 20 patients walking normally on a horizontal platform. Four different stages of weight bearing were investigated, namely 0, 10, 20, and 30 kg, in the ten diabetics and ten non-diabetics. All diabetic suffered from peripheral neuropathy, which was clinically proven as well as a reduction in nerve conduction velocity in the peroneal nerve. Non-diabetics showed no abnormal clinical finding

Mobile-group dominated dynamics and sequence of mobility transitions in facilitated random walk model of glass.

Glassy dynamics has been a topic of ongoing debate for decades. We investigate a recently proposed facilitated random walk (FRW) model, which is a kinetically constrained model (KCM) with random constraints and is a coarse-grained version of the distinguishable-particle lattice model (DPLM) of glass. Dynamics in the FRW model with a finite density of particles are dominated by mobile groups of particles enjoying emergent facilitated dynamics. We observe a diffusion coefficient power-law with respect to the particle density, with the exponent identified as the dominant mobile group size. In add

The role of team dynamics and team acquaintance in group metacognition during medical students' collaborative learning.

BACKGROUND: Group metacognition, the capacity to reflect on a group’s cognitive processes, including awareness of other members’ information organization, planning, and efforts for improvement, plays a critical role in collaborative learning efficacy. In medical education, group metacognition supports students in discussing clinical cases, recognizing peers’ diagnostic reasoning, and jointly evaluating their team’s approach to patients care. However, factors influencing group metacognitive competency remain underexplored among medical students. We hypothesized that in collaborative learning, t

Evolution of Model Compounds and Functional Group Compositions for Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Aged Asphalt Binder.

To apply molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in the study of virgin asphalt binder, researchers have relied on basis sets of representative model structures from the SARA categories of saturated aliphatics (S), naphthenic aromatics (A), polar aromatics or resins (R), and asphaltenes (A). The evolution of these model compounds for MD of binder is reviewed with emphasis on addition of oxidized species for simulations of recycled aged binders. The level and type of oxygen functional groups in many MD simulations are not consistent with reported findings. Oxidation of primary, secondary, and terti

A network of electronic neural oscillators reproduces the dynamics of the periodically forced pyloric pacemaker group.

Low-dimensional oscillators are a valuable model for the neuronal activity of isolated neurons. When coupled, the self-sustained oscillations of individual free oscillators are replaced by a collective network dynamics. Here, dynamical features of such a network, consisting of three electronic implementations of the Hindmarsh-Rose mathematical model of bursting neurons, are compared to those of a biological neural motor system, specifically the pyloric CPG of the crustacean stomatogastric nervous system. We demonstrate that the network of electronic neurons exhibits realistic synchronized burs

Observational study: Temporal dynamics of lipoprotein(a) after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: The Biobank Working Group.

BACKGROUND: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a major cause of death in the USA and Europe, with survival rates around 10%. Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is an established cardiovascular risk factor, but its temporal profile following OHCA is unknown. METHODS: In this retrospective study at a tertiary cardiac arrest center, 50 adult patients with OHCA of presumed cardiac origin were included and stratified by 6-month neurological outcome (CPC 1-2 vs. CPC 3-5). Longitudinal Lp(a) concentrations were analyzed using a linear mixed-effects model with fixed effects for time point, neurological out
