Nonsuicidal Self-Injury in Adolescents Placed in Youth Welfare and Juvenile Justice Group Homes: Associations with Mental Disorders and Suicidality.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a frequent phenomenon in adolescents, however there is a lack of studies on the prevalence of NSSI in adolescents placed in youth welfare and juvenile justice group homes. The goal of the present study is to investigate the prevalence rates of NSSI and mental disorders in adolescents living in the youth welfare system, as well as how occasional and repetitive NSSI differ with respect to mental disorders, suicidality, and gender. The sample consisted of 397 adolescents aged 12 to19 years (mean age = 15.98, SD = 1.77, 65.7% male) placed in youth welfare and juve

Integrating Virtual Reality Simulation, Online Learning, and Group Reflection to Strengthen Dementia Care in Nursing Homes: Mixed Methods Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Long-term care facilities are increasingly caring for persons living with dementia as this population grows. Frontline care workers provide most hands-on support, yet they often have limited access to formal dementia education and training. Traditional training formats frequently fail to support experiential learning or accommodate the linguistic, cultural, and demographic diversity of the long-term care workforce. OBJECTIVE: This mixed methods pilot study examined the effects of the combined use of online learning, immersive virtual reality (VR) simulation, and facilitated group

Clusters of invasive group A streptococcal infections in family, hospital, and nursing home settings.

The spread of group A streptococcal infection to close contacts of infected persons is well recognized. With the resurgence of invasive group A streptococcal infections, there is an increased potential for clusters of patients with invasive disease. We reviewed data collected since December 1988 at the Centers for Disease Control (Atlanta) to identify clusters of infection in which one or more patients had invasive disease. Twelve family clusters were identified. Infection in index cases included the toxic shock-like syndrome and septicemia. Infection in family contacts included invasive infec

Home is where the home range is: Identifying territoriality and exhibit preferences in an ex-situ group of all-male Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus).

Here, the presence or absence of territoriality was evaluated in an all-male Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) group living in an ex-situ environment. Location data for each crocodile within the exhibit were collected three times per day over a two-year period, including two warm seasons and two cold seasons. A geographic information system (GIS) was used to create seasonal home ranges and core areas for each crocodile, to quantify the overlap of these home ranges and core areas to assess potential territoriality, and to calculate exhibit preferences of the group. Core area overlap was sig

Youth Needs at Intake into Trauma-Informed Group Homes and Response to Services: An Examination of Trauma Exposure, Symptoms, and Clinical Impression.

Trauma-informed care is recommended to improve the quality of group home services for youth. Youth exposure to trauma and associated symptoms are important factors involved in making the clinical impression that determines treatment services. This study considered three dimensions of trauma (exposure, symptoms, and clinical impression) to determine associations with behavioral incidents of youth in trauma-informed group homes and how trauma was related to changes in psychopathology from intake to discharge. Archival records of youth (N = 1,096), age 9-18 (M = 15.7 years) who received services

Expressions of Identity and Self in Daily Life at a Group Home for Older Persons With Dementia in Japan.

This study focuses on expressions of identity and self among residents at a group home for older persons with dementia in Japan--a study, which started as an explorative study on spirituality--and how residents make meaning of life. Although aware of stages of dementia illness and briefly commenting on these, the analysis does not make any specific point of it. This article views dementia from a sociocultural perspective and is based on participant observations at a group home with 19 residents, combined with interviews with 6 of them. Two central concepts for the study are discussed and drawn

Relation between empathy and aggression and behavior compliance among abused group home youth.

Physically abused youth are often described as more aggressive and noncompliant in comparison with normal children, despite inconclusive findings regarding the nature of behavior problems among these youth. The present study investigated whether empathy would be differentially related to aggression and behavior compliance of abused youth within the natural living context of a group home environment. As predicted, results suggest a strong, positive relationship between empathy and lower rates of interpersonal aggression and a strong positive relationship between empathy and higher rates of beha
