Discrete modes of social information processing predict individual behavior of fish in a group.

Individual computations and social interactions underlying collective behavior in groups of animals are of great ethological, behavioral, and theoretical interest. While complex individual behaviors have successfully been parsed into small dictionaries of stereotyped behavioral modes, studies of collective behavior largely ignored these findings; instead, their focus was on inferring single, mode-independent social interaction rules that reproduced macroscopic and often qualitative features of group behavior. Here, we bring these two approaches together to predict individual swimming patterns

Vase or face? A neural correlate of shape-selective grouping processes in the human brain.

Recent neuroimaging studies have described a differential activation pattern associated with specific object images (e.g., face-related and building-related activation) in human occipito-temporal cortex. However, it is as yet unclear to what extent this selectivity is due to differences in the statistics of local object features present in the different object categories, and to what extent it reflects holistic grouping processes operating across the entire object image. To resolve this question it is essential to use images in which identical sets of local features elicit the perception of di

[ABO system blood groups and the rhesus factor in tumors and tumorlike processes of the ovaries].

Under observation were 175 patients with ovarian tumors and cysts. The distribution of ABO blood groups and Rh factor in relation to this pathology was studied as compared with the control series (2000 healthy females). There was noted an increased probability of the incidence of the majority of the ovarian tumor types among AB blood group females compared with other groups (O, A and B), and just the opposite, the probability of the tumoriform processes incidence in AB group females is considerably less than in other groups. The probability of ovarian tumors malignification proved to be the le

Understanding effects of the group process on drinking outcomes for emerging adults experiencing homelessness.

BACKGROUND: There is little research on group process for motivational interviewing-based group interventions with young people. We examine how change talk, group climate and cohesion, and facilitator empathy among emerging adults experiencing homelessness affect their drinking outcomes. METHODS: Data come from a clinical trial at three drop-in centers serving emerging adults experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles County and focus on those who received the intervention (n = 132). Participants completed baseline, 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up surveys. They were predominantly male and non-wh

Ultrasound as an Outcome Measure in Gout. A Validation Process by the OMERACT Ultrasound Working Group.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the work performed by the Outcome Measures in Rheumatology (OMERACT) Ultrasound (US) Working Group on the validation of US as a potential outcome measure in gout. METHODS: Based on the lack of definitions, highlighted in a recent literature review on US as an outcome tool in gout, a series of iterative exercises were carried out to obtain consensus-based definitions on US elementary components in gout using a Delphi exercise and subsequently testing these definitions in static images and in patients with proven gout. Cohen's κ was used to test agreement, and values of

Coating of an apatite layer on polyamide films containing sulfonic groups by a biomimetic process.

Coating organic polymers with hydroxyapatite is an attractive method for the development of materials for medical applications, as it allows hydroxyapatite to show its unique biological properties such as its ability for bone bonding and protein adsorption. The biomimetic process focuses attention on fabricating such hydroxyapatite-polymer hybrids, where bone-like apatite is deposited on an organic polymer surface in solutions mimicking physiological conditions. In this process, a bone-like apatite layer can be coated onto organic substrates either by using a simulated body fluid (SBF), which

Social-information-processing factors in reactive and proactive aggression in children's peer groups.

We examined social-information-processing mechanisms (e.g., hostile attributional biases and intention-cue detection deficits) in chronic reactive and proactive aggressive behavior in children's peer groups. In Study 1, a teacher-rating instrument was developed to assess these behaviors in elementary school children (N = 259). Reactive and proactive scales were found to be internally consistent, and factor analyses partially supported convergent and discriminant validities. In Study 2, behavioral correlates of these forms of aggression were examined through assessments by peers (N = 339). Both

The mechanism of group differences in the character of the vaccinal process in immunization against natural smallpox.

The effect of antigenic polymorphism of the ABO-system blood groups on the character of the vaccinal process after immunization against natural smallpox was investigated. The increased susceptibility of persons possessing A antigen to the harmful effect of smallpox vaccine virus is due to hereditary rather than to acquired factors. The leukocytes of peripheral blood of these persons showed a poorer binding capacity with respect to the smallpoxvaccine virus; they also exhibited a high rate of chromosomal aberration after vaccination, resulting to some extent from increased proliferative ability

Aesthetic experience as a candidate process linking group art therapy to social anxiety relief: a randomized trial with repeated process assessment.

BACKGROUND: Direct verbal disclosure may be evaluatively demanding for university students with social anxiety. Group art therapy (GAT) offers an externally focused, materially mediated mode of engagement, but its active processes remain uncertain. METHODS: In an assessor-blinded, two-arm randomized trial, 120 students with elevated social anxiety were assigned to eight weekly sessions of GAT or a structurally matched supportive discussion group (SDG). Clinical outcomes were assessed at baseline, post-intervention, and 3-month follow-up; an adapted AEQ-derived session score and two study-spec

Comorbid major depressive disorder in cognitive-behavior group treatment for social anxiety disorder: An examination of processes of symptom change.

Individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) typically have elevated depressive symptoms and approximately 50% also meet criteria for major depressive disorder (MDD; Beesdo et al., 2007). In the present study, we examined the relationship between social anxiety and depressive symptoms during cognitive-behavior group treatment (CBGT) for SAD. Specifically, we compared individuals with SAD and comorbid MDD and individuals with SAD without MDD to examine the role of MDD as a moderator of social anxiety-depression relationship. Participants were 90 individuals seeking treatment for SAD (36% were

Experiences of parents and adolescents throughout the solid-organ transplantation process: a focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Solid-organ transplantation is the optimal treatment for children and adolescents with end-stage organ failure. However, the biopsychosocial challenges faced jointly by this paediatric population have received little attention. This study is one of the few qualitative studies based on focus groups to identify the unmet care needs perceived by transplanted adolescents and parents of paediatric transplant recipients throughout the pre-, peri-, and post-surgical phases of various types of solid-organ transplantation. METHODS: Qualitative data was collected using a purposive sample se

Language exposure predicts infants' neural processing of others' actions based on language group.

What language a person speaks has been shown to divide even infants' worlds. However, open questions remain about what neural processes are involved in the differentiation of native and foreign speakers in the infant's brain. This study used electroencephalography (EEG) to examine the neural responses related to top-down attention (frontal theta synchronization), action processing (mu desynchronization), and approach-avoidance (frontal alpha asymmetry) of 8- to 12-month-old infants as they observed a native (English) speaker and a foreign (French) speaker perform a goal-directed action (i.e.,

Investigating the influence of substituent groups in TTM based radicals for the excitation process: a theoretical study.

Tri-(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl (TTM) based radicals can be promising in providing relatively high fluorescence quantum efficiency. In this study, we have evaluated the photoluminescence properties of a series of TTM-based radicals by means of DFT and TD-DFT methods. The optimized structures of the ground states (D0) and the first excited states (D1) of all the radicals are calculated and the computed emission bands are comparable with previous experimental results. knr is determined from transition dipole moments (μ12) and the energy gaps between D0 and D1 (ΔE), both of which can be regulat

Self-reported sensory processing and social participation across adult ADHD symptom groups.

INTRODUCTION: Sensory processing differences are increasingly recognized in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but their relationship with social participation remains understudied. This study examined sensory processing and social participation across three adult ADHD symptom groups and evaluated the association between sensory processing and social participation. METHODS: This cross-sectional online survey included 209 adults aged 21-65 years, categorized into self-reported ADHD diagnosis (n = 91), elevated ADHD symptoms without a reported diagnosis (n = 66), and l
