Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS) is a rare multiple congenital anomaly neurodevelopmental syndrome of impaired cholesterol synthesis. Growth restriction and developmental delay are very common clinical manifestations of SLOS. The degree, etiology, and consequences of growth restriction in SLOS remain an area of limited knowledge to the scientific community. There have been no studies describing the growth parameters and providing reference growth charts for individuals with SLOS. Our longitudinal data from 78 patients between the ages of 0.1 and 16 years with SLOS show a growth restriction of

Children with Morquio A disease grow poorly and become physically handicapped because of systemic bone disease. The purpose of this study was to describe observed growth patterns and their relationship with the physical condition of patients with Morquio A. In a one-center study, questionnaire-based longitudinal and cross sectional data were used to develop growth curves, to assess physical activity and to determine the incidence of surgical procedures in 354 patients with Morquio A. Mean birth lengths of boys and girls were 52.6 and 52.1 cm, respectively. The mean final heights for males and

BACKGROUND: Growth faltering is prevalent in 96% of children with Phosphomannomutase-2 congenital disorder of glycosylation (PMM2-CDG). Published long-term growth data is extremely limited. Growth and weight patterns of PMM2-CDG children differ from the general population limiting the utility of existing normative growth charts to track development trajectory in comparison to peers with PMM2-CDG.
OBJECTIVE: Create PMM2-CDG disease-specific height-, weight-, and BMI-for-age reference growth charts (0-20 years).
METHODS: De-identified growth data was provided by Frontiers in Congenital Disorde

Brain charts have emerged as a highly useful approach for understanding brain development and aging on the basis of brain imaging and have shown substantial utility in describing typical and atypical brain development with respect to a given reference model. However, all existing models are fundamentally cross-sectional and cannot capture change over time at the individual level. We address this using velocity centiles, which directly map change over time and can be overlaid onto cross-sectionally derived population centiles. We demonstrate this by modelling rates of change for 24,062 scans fr

The relation between weight and age in the two years following conception describes a gentle S-shaped curve. Between 28 weeks' gestation and 18 weeks' postnatal age the relationship appears linear, indicating a uniform incremental weight gain. The linear part of this curve has been used to help select an arbitrary reference line to reflect the normal average growth of a healthy population during this period. The flattening in the fetal growth curve usually observed after 40 weeks' gestation is considered to be due to the constraint of fetal growth and is therefore ignored. Arguments are advanc

BACKGROUND: Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) with Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) shows a poor prognosis. Detecting related genes is imperative for prognosis prediction.
METHODS: The gene expression profiles of LUAD and PAH were acquired from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, respectively. The co-expression modules associated with LUAD and PAH were evaluated using the Weighted Gene Co-Expression Network Analysis (WGCNA). The relationship between key gene expression with immune-cell infiltration and the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) was evalu

AIM: To calculate growth charts for pontocerebellar hypoplasia (PCH) type 2A (PCH2A) and compare them to German reference charts, especially with regard to nutritional aspects.
METHOD: Data were gathered from a cohort of patients with genetically confirmed PCH2A, who were predominantly recruited through the German PCH patient network (65 patients [33 female, 32 male] at a mean age of 8 years 7 months). We collected data retrospectively using a parent questionnaire, and from medical records (December 2020-September 2022). Disease-specific growth charts were prepared from predominantly longitud

AIMS: To explore the clinical course of children with "single kidney" (defined as either a solitary or single functioning kidney) with reference to renal function (glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and proteinuria), body height and particularly sonomorphological features.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective monocentric study evaluated 119 children with a solitary or single functioning kidney (>90% unilateral function on isotope scan) between 1997 and 2007. Patients were followed for 6.3 years (median, range 1-17) and had at least three renal ultrasound examinations (median 8). During recr

Cockayne syndrome (CS) is a multisystem degenerative disorder divided in 3 overlapping subtypes, with a continuous phenotypic spectrum: CS2 being the most severe form, CS1 the classical form and CS3 the late-onset form. Failure to thrive and growth difficulties are among the most consistent features of CS, leaving affected individuals vulnerable to numerous medical complications, including adverse effects of undernutrition, abrupt overhydration and overfeeding. There is thus a significant need for specific growth charts. We retrospectively collected growth parameters from genetically-confirmed

BACKGROUND: Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type III (Sanfilippo syndrome) comprises a group of rare, lysosomal storage diseases caused by the deficiency of one of four enzymes involved in the degradation of heparan sulfate. The clinical hallmark of the disease is severe neurological deterioration leading to dementia and death in the second decade of life. Adult MPS patients are generally of short stature. To date there is no clear description of the physical development of MPS III patients. The aim of this study was to document growth reference data for MPS III patients. We collected growth data

Patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS) presents with primary skeletal manifestations such as tall stature, chest wall abnormality, and scoliosis. These primary skeletal manifestations affect the growth pattern in MFS. Therefore, it is not appropriate to use normal growth charts to evaluate the growth status of MFS. We aimed to develop disease-specific growth charts for Korean MFS patients and to use these growth charts for understanding the growth patterns in MFS and managing of patients with MFS. Anthropometric data were available from 187 males and 152 females with MFS through a retrospective r

One of the hallmarks of twin pregnancies is the slower rate of fetal growth when compared with singleton pregnancies during the third trimester. The mechanisms underlying this phenomenon and whether it represents pathology or benign physiological adaptation are currently unclear. One important implication of these questions relates to the type growth charts that should be used by care providers to monitor growth of twin fetuses. If the slower growth represents pathology (ie, intrauterine growth restriction caused uteroplacental insufficiency), it would be preferable to use a singleton growth c

OBJECTIVES: This report provides detailed information on how the 2000 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) growth charts for the United States were developed, expanding upon the report that accompanied the initial release of the charts in 2000.
METHODS: The growth charts were developed with data from five national health examination surveys and limited supplemental data. Smoothed percentile curves were developed in two stages. In the first stage, selected empirical percentiles were smoothed with a variety of parametric and nonparametric procedures. In the second stage, parameters

In a 26-week carcinogenicity study in rasH2-Tg mice, squamous cell carcinoma on the epididymis was observed in a male mouse in the positive control group treated with N-methyl-N-nitrosourea. A 29-week-old male rasH2-Tg mouse that was euthanized 21 weeks after the administration of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea had a white-grayish mass on the left caput epididymis. The mass was nodular and consisted of pleomorphic tumor cells forming alveolar, sheeted, and trabecular structures suggesting epithelial tumor growth. These cells presented a cobblestone-like arrangement and formed intercellular bridges. Ke

Lean muscle mass (LMM) is an important aspect of human health. Temporalis muscle thickness is a promising LMM marker but has had limited utility due to its unknown normal growth trajectory and reference ranges and lack of standardized measurement. Here, we develop an automated deep learning pipeline to accurately measure temporalis muscle thickness (iTMT) from routine brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We apply iTMT to 23,876 MRIs of healthy subjects, ages 4 through 35, and generate sex-specific iTMT normal growth charts with percentiles. We find that iTMT was associated with specific phy

Growth faltering occurs frequently in infancy in the 22q11 Deletion syndrome (22q11 DS). The subsequent course of growth in childhood and outcome for final adult height lacks consensus. We analyzed 5,149 growth data points from 812 Caucasian subjects with 22q11 DS, from neonates to 37 years old. Charts were constructed for height, weight, body mass index, and head circumference (OFC) using the LMS Chart Maker program. These charts were compared with the WHO birth to 4 years growth standard and US CDC 2000 growth reference between 5 and 20 years. Starting from the 50th centile at birth, by 6-9

OBJECTIVE: To produce a more reliable, continuous set of occipitofrontal head circumference (OFC) growth reference charts for males and females from birth to adulthood in the United States.
STUDY DESIGN: After investigating the strengths and shortcomings of previous reports, we combined the most recent statistically reliable reports of OFC growth reference data into a locally weighted regression analysis to estimate percentile curves. We used cross-sectional prospective local pediatric data to validate our results.
RESULTS: We present new age- and sex-appropriate US OFC growth charts from bi
