Locally delivered minocycline and guided tissue regeneration to treat post-juvenile periodontitis. A case report.

A case of post-juvenile periodontitis in a 28-year-old female patient is described along with new periodontal treatment modalities. Administration of minocycline-HCl with local drug delivery system was introduced as a part of initial periodontal therapy following microbiological and immunological examinations. The lesions were subsequently treated by guided tissue regeneration, which resulted in considerable gain of attachment with minimal recession of marginal gingiva. This observation suggests that the local delivery of antibiotics and regenerative therapy may prove to be effective alternati

Healing of human intrabony defects following regenerative periodontal therapy with a bovine-derived xenograft and guided tissue regeneration.

The purpose of the present study was to histologically evaluate the healing of human intrabony defects following treatment with either a bovine-derived xenograft (BDX) and guided tissue regeneration (GTR) [BDX + GTR] or a bovine-derived xenograft mixed with collagen (BDX Coll) and GTR [BDX Coll + GTR]. Eight patients with chronic periodontitis and each with one very deep intrabony defect around a tooth scheduled for extraction were treated with either a combination of BDX + GTR (five patients) or with BDX Coll + GTR (three patients). The postoperative healing was uneventful in all eight cases.

Periodontal repair in dogs: a bioabsorbable calcium carbonate coral implant enhances space provision for alveolar bone regeneration in conjunction with guided tissue regeneration.

BACKGROUND: Collapse or compression of a barrier device into a periodontal defect or onto the root surface compromises outcomes following guided tissue regeneration (GTR). Bone biomaterials have been suggested to support regeneration of alveolar bone and to improve space provision with GTR devices. The objective of this study was to evaluate space provision, alveolar bone, and cementum regeneration following use of a bioabsorbable, calcium carbonate biomaterial in conjunction with GTR. METHODS: Routine, critical size, 5 to 6 mm, supraalveolar, periodontal defects were created in 5 young adult

Effect of autogenous cortical bone grafting in conjunction with guided tissue regeneration in the treatment of intraosseous periodontal defects.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this clinical trial was to evaluate the additional benefit of using guided tissue regeneration (GTR) with autogenous cortical bone (ACB) grafting versus ACB grafting alone for the regenerative treatment of intraosseous periodontal defects. METHODS: Via a split-mouth design, 12 patients with chronic periodontitis (five men, seven women; mean age, 45.3±4.6 years) who had probing pocket depths (PPDs) of ≥6 mm following initial periodontal therapy were randomly assigned to two treatments in contralateral areas of the dentition: a combination of ACB grafting and GTR (with a

Early wound healing outcomes after regenerative periodontal surgery with enamel matrix derivatives or guided tissue regeneration: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Proper wound healing after regenerative surgical procedures is an essential issue for clinical success. Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) and application of enamel matrix derivatives (EMD) are common means to regenerate periodontal tissues. Both methods bear considerable advantages due to their special characteristics, but also go along with certain disadvantages. Today, there is no consensus in the literature whether GTR or EMD show better results regarding early wound healing, which is considered a crucial stage in periodontal regeneration. Therefore, the aim of the present system

Single flap approach with and without guided tissue regeneration and a hydroxyapatite biomaterial in the management of intraosseous periodontal defects.

BACKGROUND: The single flap approach (SFA) is a minimally invasive procedure designed for periodontal reconstructive procedures of intraosseous periodontal defects characterized by a dominant unilateral, buccal or oral, extension. This study evaluates the adjunctive effect of guided tissue regeneration (GTR) combined with a hydroxyapatite (HA) biomaterial in the management of intraosseous periodontal defects accessed with SFA compared to SFA alone. METHODS: Twenty-four intraosseous defects (in 24 patients) were randomly allocated to treatment with SFA or SFA + HA/GTR. Clinical outcomes were a

Guided tissue regeneration with bioabsorbable and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene barrier membranes in the treatment of naturally occurring periodontal defects in dogs.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the healing events and compare the effects of guided tissue regeneration (GTR) using 3 different membranes: a weakly cross-linked bioabsorbable bovine collagen membrane; a strongly cross-linked bioabsorbable bovine collagen membrane; and a non-resorbable ePTFE membrane. Twenty adult female beagle dogs with naturally occurring periodontitis were subjected to periodontal probing and scaling. In both right and left mandibular quadrants, mucoperiosteal flaps were raised, and after debridement, the roots of experimental premolar teeth received apical

Periodontal regeneration in class III furcation defects of beagle dogs using guided tissue regenerative therapy with platelet-derived growth factor.

We developed an effective regenerative therapy, referred to as platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB)-modulated guided tissue regenerative (GTR) therapy (P-GTR), capable of achieving periodontal regeneration of horizontal (Class III) furcation defects in the beagle dog. To determine its efficacy, repair and regeneration of horizontal furcation defects by P-GTR therapy and GTR therapy were compared. Chronically inflamed horizontal furcation defects were created around the second (P2) and fourth mandibular premolars (P4). After demineralization of the root surfaces with citric acid, the sur

Effect of root conditioning on periodontal wound healing with and without guided tissue regeneration: a pilot study. II. Autoradiographic evaluation.

This investigation deals with the proliferation and migration of the progenitor cells during the healing of closed periodontal wounds. Periodontal surgical defects affecting the bone and dentin were created in four mongrel dogs. The defects were treated with topical applications of citric acid, tetracycline, or sterile water with and without the placement of nonresorbable membranes. The dogs were killed at 1, 3, 7, and 21 days after surgery. One hour before they were killed, they were intravenously injected with tritiated thymidine. Tissues were processed and routinely prepared for autoradiogr

Effect of root conditioning on periodontal wound healing with and without guided tissue regeneration: a pilot study. 1. Histologic evaluation.

Closed fenestration wounds in four mongrel dogs were used to study the source of fibroblast proliferation and extracellular matrix production during healing; the arrangement and attachment of newly formed collagenous fibers; and the cementogenesis and osteogenesis at healing sites. Fenestration wounds were made through the alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, cementum, and dentin, and citric acid, tetracycline, or sterile water was applied to the dentinal walls for 3 minutes. Nonresorbable membranes were randomly placed over half of the defects. Animals were killed at 1, 3, 7, or 21 days and r

Scanning electron microscopic observations of cell populations and bacterial contamination of membranes used for guided periodontal tissue regeneration in humans.

Fourteen intrabony periodontal defects and six furcation defects (Class II) were treated by a flap procedure which included the use of a polytetrafluoroethylene membrane to allow guided tissue regeneration. After 4 to 6 weeks of healing, the membranes were retrieved and examined by scanning electron microscopy for the presence of adherent cells and other tissue elements. The cervical open pore-structured collar of the membrane, which in most cases had become partially exposed to the oral cavity, had a deposit of bacterial plaque. Bacterial Bacterial colonies and a scatter of single cells in so
