Racial disparities in gun violence: current evidence, an integrated cascading perspective, knowledge gaps, policy prescriptions.

At the intersection of public health and violence is the glaring disparity surrounding racial disparities in gun violence. This mini-review summarizes what is known about racial disparities in gun violence, identifies some of the key theoretical frameworks advanced to explain the disparities and located them in an integrated cascading perspective, identifies several research gaps, and concludes by outlining a series of future research issues.

After the gun: examining police visits and intimate partner violence following incidents involving a firearm.

Laws have been enacted to keep firearms out of the hands of abusers. In this study, we examined one such effort-removal of a firearm at the scene of intimate partner violence (IPV)-to assess the subsequent occurrence and number of IPV incidents responded to by police and subsequent risk of injury to the victim. Using the 28,977 IPV calls in one large U.S. city to which officers responded during the 2013 calendar year, we identified 220 first-time incidents in which offenders used (i.e., brandished, pistol whipped, shot) a pistol, revolver, rifle, or shotgun. Officers reported removing a firear

Beyond Immediate Responses: A Systems Map of Community Factors Underlying Persistent Gun Violence in New Haven.

Gun violence is a pervasive and multifaceted public health problem. This study describes a novel application of group model building-a process that centers stakeholder voices to describe a complex problem-to investigate drivers of gun violence and design community-led interventions for prevention in New Haven, Connecticut. We recruited community leaders to participate in 2 group model building sessions in New Haven. Discussions and diagrams created during the sessions were used to produce a causal loop diagram illustrating proposed relationships between gun violence and other variables. Our re

Nutrition facts, drug facts, and model facts: putting AI ethics into practice in gun violence research.

OBJECTIVE: Firearm injury research necessitates using data from often-exploited vulnerable populations of Black and Brown Americans. In order to reduce bias against protected attributes, this study provides a theoretical framework for establishing trust and transparency in the use of AI with the general population. METHODS: We propose a Model Facts template that is easily extendable and decomposes accuracy and demographics into standardized and minimally complex values. This framework allows general users to assess the validity and biases of a model without diving into technical model documen

Position statement: The Society of Behavioral Medicine supports federal action to break the cycle of gun violence.

The United States continues to see significant issues with gun violence, resulting in significant public health concerns. Behavioral medicine is often involved in addressing the psychological aftermath of gun violence, as survivors experience higher rates of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and suicidal ideation. Black and Latino communities are disproportionately affected by gun violence due to structural inequities, with gun violence furthering the structural and health inequities experienced in these communities. While the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022 helped to improv

Gun Violence in the COVID-19 Era: Using Multiple Databases to Describe the Experience in Buffalo, NY.

ObjectivesIn 2020, the public health crises of gun violence and novel coronavirus (COVID-19) collided and interventions to decrease COVID-19 transmission displaced millions of Americans from normal activity. We analyzed the effects of COVID-19 and its resultant shutdowns on gun violence in Buffalo, NY.MethodsWe queried the Gun Violence Archive (GVA) and the hospital databases from the 2 level 1 trauma centers which serve Buffalo firearm victims between March 15th and June 24th, 2020 ("COVID") and the same time period for years 2013 (hospital data)/2014 (GVA data) through 2019 ("pre-COVID") and

Building community resilience to prevent and mitigate community impact of gun violence: conceptual framework and intervention design.

INTRODUCTION: The USA has the highest rate of community gun violence of any developed democracy. There is an urgent need to develop feasible, scalable and community-led interventions that mitigate incident gun violence and its associated health impacts. Our community-academic research team received National Institutes of Health funding to design a community-led intervention that mitigates the health impacts of living in communities with high rates of gun violence. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We adapted 'Building Resilience to Disasters', a conceptual framework for natural disaster preparedness, to

Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBM) position statement: restore CDC funding for firearms and gun violence prevention research.

The Society for Behavioral Medicine (SBM) urges restoration of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funding for firearms and gun violence prevention research. Gun violence in the United States is an important and costly public health issue in need of research attention. Unfortunately, there have been no concerted CDC-funded research efforts in this area since 1996, due to the passage of the Dickey Amendment. To remedy the information-gathering restrictions caused by the Dickey Amendment bans, it is recommended that Congress remove 'policy riders' on federal appropriations bills tha

Firearm legislation, gun violence, and mortality in children and young adults: A retrospective cohort study of 27,566 children in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Firearm violence results in the death of thousands of children in the US annually. The effects of firearm legislation on gun violence are published but widely contested. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Kid's Inpatient Database from 2000 to 2009 were queried to capture hospitalizations of children diagnosed with a firearm-related injury. Cases were categorized into five levels of firearm legislation strictness by Brady State Scorecard. Trends of injuries were explored in terms of legislative strength, age, and race. RESULTS: 27,566 children analyzed in the study. Most were adolescents

Risk and Resilience Factors of Participants in Urban Community Gun Violence Intervention & Prevention: Insights from the Advance Peace Program.

Urban community-based gun violence prevention programs engage those with the greatest risk of perpetrating violence and provide them with services and supports to help them change their behaviors. Empirical studies of this public-health-oriented strategy, called community violence intervention (CVI), have been mixed, and few have reported which risk factors are most prevalent among participants. We offer detailed descriptive data about the risks and protective factors that participants in one CVI program, called Advance Peace, displayed at the onset of the intervention. Advance Peace operates

In-person and media gun violence exposure in the United States: prevalence and disparities in a nationally representative, cross-sectional sample of adults.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge remains limited about how people experience different types of exposure to gun violence. We analyzed the prevalence of in-person and media gun violence exposure (GVE) in a nationally representative sample of US adults. METHODS: Data were collected from 8009 US adults in May 2024, using design weights for representativeness. We measured in-person GVE, including direct (e.g., being shot) and indirect (e.g., hearing gunshots) exposures, along with frequency of exposure via traditional and social media. Exposures were analyzed by racial/ethnic group and household income. Mul

What doesn't kill us, hurts us longer: a cross-sectional analysis of gun violence exposure and chronic pain in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Gun violence exposure (GVE) has been widely studied for its mental health consequences, but its relationship with chronic pain remains understudied. The study’s objective was to determine the association between direct and indirect forms of gun violence exposure and multiple chronic pain outcomes among US adults using nationally representative data. METHODS: The current study is a cross-sectional observational analysis using a probability-based, nationally representative online survey conducted in May 2024. A total of 12,822 individuals were invited to participate via the Ipsos Kno

Prospective association between neighborhood gun violence and brachial artery endothelial function in Black adolescents, and mediating roles of dietary quality and central adiposity.

Though neighborhood gun violence has been associated with increased cardiovascular risk among youth, most of this evidence is cross-sectional and there is limited understanding of pathways that might underly this relationship and could serve as intervention targets. Thus, in a sample of 400 Black adolescents from lower-income households around Chicago, we calculated incidents of neighborhood gun violence during the 5 years prior to study entry, and modeled its association with endothelial function, measured by brachial artery flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) on 3 occasions across a two-year pe

Witnessing Community Violence, Gun Carrying, and Associations with Substance Use and Suicide Risk Among High School Students - Youth Risk Behavior Survey, United States, 2021.

Community violence, including homicides involving firearms, is a significant public health concern. From 2019 to 2020, firearm-related homicides increased by 39% for youths and young adults aged 10-24 years, and rates of suicide by firearm increased by approximately 15% among the same age group. Findings from the nationally representative 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey were used to analyze disparities and correlates of witnessing community violence and gun carrying among a nationally representative sample of high school students. Chi-square tests and logistic regression accounting for the com

On the role of economic hardship in gun acquisition in the United States.

Gun-related violence in the U.S. threatens public health and strains the healthcare system. Prior work suggests that self-protection is a key driver of gun prevalence in the U.S., whereby Americans seek to acquire a gun when they fear that they themselves or their loved ones may be at risk of violence. The more the gun homicides take place in a city, the stronger the tendency to own a gun by its residents. While it is tenable that economic conditions may modulate the strength of this association, we know little about how economic hardship shapes gun ownership in the U.S. Leveraging mutual info
