This scoping review study aimed to map the evidence about solvents' use for gutta-percha dissolution and removal during endodontic retreatments. The study protocol followed the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines, available online (https://osf.io/5vy8n/). Reporting was based on PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews. We selected dentistry studies that considered the effectiveness of solvents in gutta-percha dissolution in endodontic retreatments and compared their performance to the use of instrumentation techniques without solvents. The search and study screening were performed in PubMed and Sco

INTRODUCTION: MTA Fillapex (Angelus Solucoes Odontologicas, Londrina PR, Brazil) was introduced as a mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)-based sealer used for endodontic obturation. There is a lack of research that evaluates the ability of different solvents to soften MTA-based sealers during retreatment. This study tested the ability of 4 commonly used endodontic solvents to soften gutta-percha and MTA Fillapex to allow for the re-establishment of apical patency.
METHODS: Eighty-six extracted maxillary anterior teeth were instrumented to the working length to a size 45 (.04 taper size). Teeth w

This study examined histologically the effect of three sealers used with gutta-percha as root-end fillings placed in a replantation model. A total of 14 molar teeth were used in seven monkeys. After extraction, root ends were resected, the canals contaminated with oral bacteria, root-end cavities prepared, and fillings of gutta-percha and sealer placed prior to replantation. After 8 weeks the teeth and surrounding jaw were removed and prepared for histological examination. Six roots filled with gutta-percha plus a fortified zinc oxide-eugenol cement (IRM), 13 with gutta-percha plus zinc oxide-

INTRODUCTION: Maxillary premolars are among the teeth most susceptible to vertical root fracture (VRF) from lateral condensation of gutta-percha. These teeth are distinguished by a complex anatomy of the buccal root including a large depression in the dentin wall facing the bifurcation. It is hypothesized that tooth sectioning coupled with 2-dimensional fracture analysis is instrumental in understanding VRF in such teeth. VRF was examined by tooth sectioning following the development of a fracture mechanics analysis to predict VRF in such roots.
METHODS: The fracture morphology in teeth extra

The surface integrity of gutta-percha cones is a crucial factor in the success of endodontic procedures. Disinfecting solutions play a pivotal role in sterilizing gutta-percha cones, but their influence on gutta-percha surface topography remains a subject of concern. This systematic review aimed to present a qualitative synthesis of available laboratory studies assessing the influence of disinfecting solutions on the surface topography of gutta-percha and offers insights into the implications for clinical practice. The present review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. An advanced database search

Dental materials can stray into the maxillary sinus, causing maxillary sinusitis. We present a case of coexistent fungal rhinosinusitis and actinomycosis caused by gutta-percha points, a core-filling material used for root canal treatment. A 56-year-old man who had undergone root canal treatment with gutta-percha points visited our oral surgery department with complaints of purulent nasal discharge lasting one month. Panoramic radiography confirmed the presence of the foreign body in the left maxillary sinus. As per his wish for tooth preservation, he was referred to our department for the tra

Previous studies have shown that lateral condensation of gutta-percha and sealer can provide an adequate apical seal. The purpose of this study was to compare the level of apical dye penetration when different sealers were used. One-hundred twenty-five teeth with single root canals were biomechanically prepared using the step-back technique and irrigation with EDTAC and 1% NaOCl solutions. The teeth were divided into five groups of 25 teeth each. The control group root canals were filled with laterally condensed gutta-percha and no sealer and the other four groups were filled with laterally co

Root canal treatment (RCT) is the standard endodontic procedure for eliminating infection and preserving natural teeth. However, treatment failure can occur when residual bacteria persist within complex root canal anatomies, as current irrigation protocols do not provide direct confirmation of bacterial presence prior to obturation. Herein, we present SteriGP, an engineered Gutta-Percha (GP)-based proof-of-concept theranostic platform that integrates bacterial detection with localized photothermal disinfection during root canal treatment. SteriGP employs a ferricyanide-mediated bioreaction in

BACKGROUND: Endodontic sealers are essential for sealing gutta-percha to the dentin walls. They help to ensure that the canal remains free of microorganisms which might lead to infection. In order to perform their intended function, the sealers should properly adhere to the dentin walls and remain insoluble when set in the canal.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond strength and solubility of a novel polydimethylsiloxane-gutta-percha calcium silicate-containing root canal sealer (GuttaFlow® bioseal) and compare it with the zinc oxide and eugenol sealer (Zical®).
