Sweet taste receptor inhibitors: Potential treatment for equine insulin dysregulation.

Hyperinsulinemia is a major risk factor for equine laminitis, a debilitating and painful foot condition. Sweet taste receptor (T1R2/3) inhibitors have been used to reduce the insulin and glucose responses to oral carbohydrates in other species. However, their effect in horses has not been investigated. It would be useful to be able to attenuate the large post-prandial insulin response that typically occurs when a carbohydrate-rich meal is fed to insulin-dysregulated horses. Here we have determined the efficacy of two T1R2/3 inhibitors, lactisole and Gymnema sylvestre, for reducing glucose upta

Antioxidants as a Link Between Diabetes and Potential Plant-Based Therapies.

The pathogenesis and advancement of diabetes mellitus and its associated complications are heavily driven by oxidative stress (OS). It happens when the body produces excessive amounts of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS). This causes cell damage and leads to chronic health issues, prompting scientific interest in antioxidant-based treatments. In the context of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, the search for new natural bioactive compounds is of particular importance. Within the realm of traditional healthcare, Ayurveda commands significant scientific interest. Botanical materials

Natural compounds as safe therapeutic options for ulcerative colitis.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease of unknown etiology. Several conventional treatments for UC such as corticosteroids, immunosuppressive agents, tumor necrosis factor antagonist, integrin blockers, and interleukin antagonist, and salicylates are available but are associated with the various limitations and side-effects. None of the above treatments helps to achieve the ultimate goal of the therapy, i.e., maintenance of remission in the long-term. Natural remedies for the treatment of UC show comparatively less side effects as compared to conventional approaches, a

Sweetness-independent bitterness suppression of rebaudioside A by sucrose in a cocoa model.

BACKGROUND: Taste interactions have been a focus of research in recent decades; however, many underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the sweet-sweet and sweet-bitter interaction mechanisms between sucrose and 60% rebaudioside A (REBA) in a complex cocoa model system. A split-tongue method was used to assess peripheral and central interaction effects, allowing the tongue to serve as its own control. The study was conducted under normal conditions and under a sweetness-blocked condition induced by a pre-rinse with Gymnema sylvestre extract. Participants (n = 65) were aged

Effects of a stimulant-free dietary supplement on body weight and fat loss in obese adults: a six-week exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, osteoarthritis, and stroke. Stimulants, such as ephedrine and caffeine and their herbal counterparts, have proved effective in facilitating body weight loss, but their use is controversial due to their undesired effects. Other nutraceuticals have shown moderate success in reducing body weight, whereas several other compounds have demonstrated little or no effect. Therefore, a tolerable and effective nutraceutical that can increase energy expenditure and/or decrease caloric
