[The HLA-B5 immunogenetic marker in Behçet's disease].

Twenty-three patients with Behçet's disease (BD) meeting the criteria of the international group for classification and diagnosis of BD (17 men and 6 women) were typed for HLA antigens class 1. The patients group was multinational, of them 19 were Caucasoids and 4 Mongoloids. It was shown that HLA B5 in Caucasoids occurred more frequently vs normal controls (73.7% and 15.5%, respectively). Under the correction of the antigens number up to 21, the differences continued to be statistically high. Characteristic for B5 antigen was a high relative risk and close association with the disease. In ant

A common HLA phenotype in slipped capital femoral epiphysis?

Studies from three different countries have linked the HLA B12 and DR4 antigens with slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). We questioned whether our patients shared in common either of these antigens. HLA phenotype was determined in 7 patients with SCFE, two of whom were brothers with almost identical haplotypes. The B12 antigen was found in none of our patients and the DR4 in only 3. Neither of the 2 brothers held the DR4 antigen. The commonest antigens (also shared by the 2 brothers) were B35, present in 5 and DR52 in 4 of 7 patients. We conclude that neither the previously described B12

Genetic analysis of subacute (de Quervain's) thyroiditis.

A weak association between subacute (de Quervain's) thyroiditis and HLA-DRw8 (relative risk = 2.19, X2 = 3.86) was observed. However, the association was not statistically significant if p value was corrected. Since it was confirmed that the association of subacute thyroiditis with HLA-B35 was primary, and since this association was extremely strong, the two models (dominant and recessive) for the effect of an HLA-linked gene which has a major effect on the pathogenesis of subacute thyroiditis were tested by the method described by Thomson & Bodmer using the frequency of HLA-B35 in the patient

[The possibility of predicting the development of bronchial asthma].

A total of 235 patients with bronchial asthma and preasthma and their 85 relatives of the 1st degree of kinship were investigated. A detailed clinicofunctional and immunological investigation including a study of histocompatibility antigens, revealed the relationships between bronchial asthma development and antigens A2, B13, B21, B35 carriage. The authors presented a complex of methods (provocative acetylcholine tests, anaprilin test, determination of HLA antigens) permitting the prediction of this disease in patients with an aggravated hereditary and allergological history at the preclinical

Ankylosing spondylarthritis associated with acne conglobata.

We report a case of a rare association between acne conglobata and ankylosing spondylarthritis B27 negative which occurred in a young man. The pathogenetic relationship of the association is not certain, although some researches suggest that the onset of ankylosing spondylarthritis can result from cutaneous disease. Despite the long evolution of ankylosing spondylitis, it is not severe. Thus, the presence of B35 CREG antigens confirm that locus B antigens different from B27 could be associated with a more favourable prognosis of the disease.

Comparative case control study of clinical features and human leukocyte antigen susceptibility between familial and nonfamilial vitiligo.

BACKGROUND: Various studies worldwide suggest that human leukocyte antigen (HLA) region may be involved in the genetic susceptibility of vitiligo but little information is available from India. AIM: To find the HLA associated susceptibility to develop vitiligo in Indian patients and to detect role of HLA in familial vitiligo. METHODS: This was a case controlled study which included all patients suffering from vitiligo over a period of one and half years. Clinical details were noted and sera collected from these patients were screened for the presence of HLA class I antibodies. The clinical f

Increased frequency of HLA-DR3 and 5 in the syndromes of painless thyroiditis with transient thyrotoxicosis: evidence for an autoimmune aetiology.

We studied fifty patients with painless thyroiditis with transient thyrotoxicosis (PTTT) and a low radioiodine thyroidal uptake. In 25 PTTT occurred post-partum (P) and in the remainder was unrelated to pregnancy (U). Seventeen patients with classical subacute thyroiditis were studied for comparison. All patients were typed for HLA-A, B, C, DR antigens. Four of the P patients had recurrences with each pregnancy; two had one previous attack of U; three had a maternal history of Graves' disease; 76% of the P patients had small to moderate goitres and 76% antimicrosomal antibody titres at greater

HLA haplotypes and class II molecular alleles in Sardinian and Italian patients with pemphigus vulgaris.

HLA class II antigens and DRB1, DQA1, DQB1 alleles were studied in 16 Italian and in 16 Sardinian patients with pemphigus vulgaris (PV). In the last group the complete HLA A-DQ haplotypes, including the complotypes, were defined by family studies. As in other populations, two PV susceptibility haplotypes were found: HLA-DRB1*0402, DQA1*0301, DQB1*0302 and HLA-DRB1*1401, DQA1*0104, DQB1*0503. The first haplotype was largely prevalent in the Sardinian patients and was a part of the extended haplotype HLA-A2, Cw4, B35, S31, DR4, DQ8. The strength of the allele associations to PV is in agreement w

Antigens of the HLA system in women with vulvar lichen sclerosus. Association with HLA-B21.

The cause of vulvar lichen sclerosus (VLS) is unknown. An autoimmune origin has been suggested. The HLA system is responsible for the synthesis of major histocompatibility antigens and is considered a genetic marker of the risk of or resistance to some diseases. Recently, the association between some antigens of the HLA system and diseases of proven autoimmune origin has been reported. A possible association between antigens of the HLA system and VLS has been investigated by others, with contradictory results. Here we report the results of HLA typing in 68 women with histologically proven VLS.

Differences in the distribution of HLA antigens in localized and generalized form of onchocerciasis.

Fifty-nine unrelated Liberians have been studied for human leukocyte antigens (HLA). Twenty-three individuals were classified as localized and 24 as generalized onchocerciasis, and the remaining 12 subjects showed no signs of the infection. HLA-typing documented differences in phenotype frequencies for class I (A, B, C) and class II (DR) antigens between the 3 groups of tested subjects. The strongest differences were observed between the localized form and the group without infection with a predominance of HLA-B35 (52% vs. 25%), Cw4 (48% vs. 25%), DR3 (57% vs. 17%), DR5 (65% vs. 8%, DRw52 (96%

TCR-Based Therapy Directed against Kallikrein-Related Peptidase 4 Is Safe and Effective against Prostate Cancer.

The efficacy of most immunotherapies for prostate cancer is limited by poor tumor immunogenicity as evidenced by minimal T-cell infiltration. Treatment with T cells engineered to express T-cell receptors (TCR) targeting prostate-specific antigens offers a potential solution by bypassing endogenous T-cell repertoire limitations. Through differential gene expression analysis, we have identified kallikrein-related peptidases 2, 3, and 4 (KLK2, KLK3, and KLK4) and homeobox B13 (HOXB13) as strictly prostate lineage-specific genes with high expression in prostate cancer and no expression in healthy

Association between alopecia areata and HLA Class I and II in Turkey.

HLA class I and II alleles have been described in patients with alopecia areata (AA). As in other immune mediated diseases, the HLA alleles associated with AA may influence the patient's ability to respond to immune challenges from both self and non-self antigens and can offer clues to the cause, prognosis, and potential therapy for the disease. The aim of this study was to determine which HLA class I and II alleles are associated with Turkish alopecia areata patients. Sixty-three patients with AA, alopecia totalis, or alopecia universalis were included in this study and compared with seventy-

The HLA-DR phenotype of the responder is predictive of humoral response against HLA class I antigens.

Recent studies suggest that the immunogenicity of an human leukocyte antigen (HLA) incompatibility should be considered in the context of the HLA phenotype of the recipient. The HLA-DR phenotype of the responder is thought to be predictive for the strength of the alloimmune response. In order to analyze the humoral response against HLA class I antigens in the context of the HLA-DR phenotype of the responder, we selected all HLA-DR homozygous Dutch patients that were present on the Eurotransplant waiting list between 1967 and 2000 (n=1,317 patients). By logistic regression it was determined whe

High panel reactive antibody against cross-reactive group antigens as a contraindication to renal allotransplantation.

Preformed circulating cytotoxic IgG anti-HLA alloantibodies induced by previous failed grafts, blood transfusion, or pregnancy are a contraindication to allotransplantation and result in hyperacute rejection. These persistent, highly cytotoxic panel reactive antibodies (PRAs) may be specific for epitopes that are shared among HLA antigens known as cross-reactive groups (CREGs). The present investigation includes 24 subjects awaiting renal transplants with flow cytometric PRAs >30%. Eighty-seven percent of the patients developed alloantibodies specific for the mismatched antigens of previous fa

Development of Graves' disease after subacute thyroiditis: two unusual cases.

This report describes two unusual cases of subacute thyroiditis from which Graves' disease with hyperthyroidism developed seven to eight years after complete recovery. The first case is a 45-year-old woman who developed hyperthyroidism seven years after recovering from subacute thyroiditis. This patient had a genetic predisposition to both subacute thyroiditis HLA-BW35 and Graves' disease (HLA-BW46). The second case is a 60-year-old woman who developed hyperthyroidism eight years after the episode of subacute thyroiditis; her HLA showed neither BW 35 nor BW 46. It has been reported that if hyp

Unique HLA antigen frequencies in the Finnish population.

The Finnish Bone Marrow Donor Registry was established 1992 to serve Finnish patients in urgent need of bone marrow transplantation. This study details the HLA antigen frequencies, including those of the A 19 subtypes, in the Finnish population. Large regional variations were found in antigen frequencies between the different geographical areas of Finland. In particular, antigens A9, B12, B35, Cw4 and DR3 display regional frequency deviations, but B7, B8 and B15 also exhibit regional variations. The present population is the largest (n = 10,000) ever HLA-typed in Finland. 97% of the donors wer

Hepatitis C virus replication in Caucasian HIV controllers.

Whether HIV controllers, patients who spontaneously control HIV viraemia, are able to control hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, in terms of spontaneous clearance or lower HCV replication, is not well understood. To assess to what extent Caucasian HIV controllers are able to control HCV replication and potential associated factors, plasma HIV-1 and HCV RNA levels, anti-HCV antibodies, HCV genotype and human leucocyte antigens (HLA) typing were determined in samples from 75 HIV controllers (33 viraemic controllers, <1000 HIV-1 RNA copies/mL, and 42 elite controllers, <40 HIV-1 RNA copies/mL) an
