The stimulation of T cells by staphylococcal enterotoxins (SE) is strictly dependent on major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II-bearing cells. The phenotype distribution of seven HLA--D alleles among 72 unrelated Psoriasis vulgaris patients was investigated. Statistically significant deviation from the antigen frequency in healthy donors was found for a new HLA--D allele, locally designated EI, with a relative risk value of 5.97. This observation indicates that Psoriasis vulgaris belongs to the group of diseases with associations to HLA--B as well as HLA--D alleles.

Two siblings with chronic discoid lupus erythematosus and several family members were found with heterozygous C2 deficiency. An association with histocompatibility markers HLA-B18 and HLA-Dw2 was demonstrated, and the slow allotype of factor B was present. Linkage studies in this family suggested a close linkage between the C2 deficiency gene and genes coding for B18, Dw2, and BfS antigens. Regional variations in the human leucocyte antigen (HLA) distribution patterns of coeliac disease (CD) have been reported. This study focuses on phenotype frequencies of a cohort of Austrian paediatric CD patients in comparison with those recorded in the literature. HLA class I and II typing was performed in 136 CD patients and 667 healthy controls from the general population of the same geographical area. The HLA phenotypes of our controls agreed with those published for Caucasians. In our patients the relative risks (RR) were 6.43 for DR3 and 2.52 for DR7, the aetiologic fractions being 0.58

Several studies have supported the hypothesis that the maternal immune response to incompatible paternal HLA antigens present on the conceptus may influence pregnancy outcome. The HLA-B7/DR association was examined in a normal British population and in seven HLA-B7-positive patients with Felty's syndrome. After the exclusion of the most frequent A3-B7-DR2 association, a significant A2-B7-DR4 association was evident. This was present in six of the seven HLA-B7-positive Felty's patients and might indicate that the A2-B7-DR4 haplotype is prevalent in some forms of rheumatoid arthritis.

Coeliac disease is associated with the HLA Class I antigens A1 and B8 as well as with Class II antigens D/DR3, 7 and DC3. Multiple sclerosis, an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, is characterized by primary destruction of myelin. This review covers recent advances in neuropathology, immunogenetics, neuroimmunology, and neurovirology that have provided insights regarding its pathogenesis. Frozen sections of jejunal mucosa from control subjects and patients with both treated and untreated coeliac disease were examined for HLA class II DR, DP and DQ expression. Thirty caucasian patients suffering from classic erosive rheumatoid arthritis (RA), with a condition persisting for more than 8 years, were examined together with 67 healthy control subjects with regard to associations to HLA-DR and HLA-B-CREG antigens (B5-, B8-, B12-, B16- and B27-CREG).
