Erectile dysfunction and HTLV-I infection: a silent problem.

The human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is a retrovirus associated with a chronic myelopathy known as HTLV-I-Associated Myelopathy or Tropical Spastic Paraparesis (HAM/TSP). The main objective was to assess the frequency of erectile dysfunction (ED) in HTLV-I-infected individuals from Salvador and other cities from Bahia, Brazil, as well as to verify if sexual dysfunction correlates with urinary symptoms and overall neurological impairment. From January 2001 to April 2004, 218 HTLV-I carriers (111 male and 107 female subjects) had complete clinical, neurological, and urological evaluati

Neurological manifestations in HTLV-I-infected blood donors.

The human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-I) causes a neurological disease known as HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) in a minority of infected individuals. Although other neurological outcomes have been described their prevalence is presently unknown. To evaluate the frequency and characteristics of neurological involvement in a population of HTLV-I-infected blood donors we investigated 196 HTLV-I positive and 196 negative blood donors from a blood center of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Individuals with abnormalities at the neurological examination were exa

Infection of synoviocytes with HTLV-I induces telomerase activity.

To investigate the mechanism of synovial hyperplasia by human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) infection, the enzymatic activity of telomerase and expression of telomerase-related factors in HTLV-I infected synoviocytes were examined. Cultured synoviocytes obtained from four patients with osteoarthritis (OA) and four with traumatic joint disease (TJD) were infected by HTLV-I. Telomerase activity was detected by telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP) assay. Expression of telomerase-related mRNAs such as telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT), telomerase RNA component (hTERC), and

Inflammatory myopathy on HTLV-I infection: case report.

We describe a 41 years old woman who 17 years ago presented hypotonia and proximal muscular weakness in the upper and lower limbs. On neurological examination, the biceps, triceps and Achilles reflexes were absent; the brachioradialis reflexes were decreased and the patellar reflexes were normal. There was bilateral Babinski sign. The remainder of the neurological examination was unremarkable. In the investigation a myopathic pattern was found in the electromyography. The nerve-conduction study was normal; a ELISA method for HTLV-I antibodies was positive in the blood and in the cerebral spina

Prevalence and transmission of HTLV-I infection in Natal/KwaZulu.

A community-based seroprevalence survey for human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) was undertaken in the Ngwelezane district of Natal/KwaZulu. A total of 1,018 individuals was interviewed for risk factors and had blood drawn for serological examination. To exclude antibody cross-reactivity between anti-HTLV-I and anti-HTLV-II all Western blot HTLV-I-positive samples were further subjected to a Select HTLV test. For comparison, anonymous HIV testing was done. The areas of residence of patients with myelopathy associated with HTLV-I were also ascertained. The seroprevalence of HTLV-I wa

[A case of flaccid paraplegia associated with HTLV-I infection].

A 63-year-old female began to have progressive gait disturbance at the age of 50. Neurologic examination revealed weakness and hypotonus of bilateral leg muscles. Deep tendon reflexes were hypoactive with positive Babinski sign and vibration sense was diminished in the legs. HTLV-I antibody titers were elevated both in serum (x 131,072) and in CSF (x 512). The result of nerve conduction velocities and short latency somatosensory evoked potentials suggested mild peripheral nerve lesion. Needle EMG studies showed myogenic changes in the upper limbs and also, neurogenic changes in the lower limbs

[Seroepidemiologic data on viral infections (HTLV-I and LAV/HTLV-III) in the Caribbean region and intertropical Africa].

Since two years our laboratory is involved in the sero-epidemiology of retroviruses in Martinique, French Guiana and Equatorial Africa. French West Indies is an endemic area for HTLV-I with 3 to 5% positivity in blood donors. Such a prevalence increases with age in the general population, reaching 30% after 60 years of age. Data are given here regarding hematological and neurological syndromes observed in Martinique and associated with HTLV-I. Furthermore, we recently discovered an association between HTLV-I and the neuro-myelopathy named endemic Tropical Spastic Paraparesis. Such an associati

[Clinical and biological epidemiology of onco-retroviral HTLV-I and II infections].

Human T cell leukemia virus type I and II are endemic in South West Japan and in large parts of the equatorial belt in Central and South America, in Africa, and in some Pacific islands, areas where 1 to 5% of the general populations are infected. Pockets of high prevalence up to 15% and even 35% can be observed. The transmission of HTLV-I includes: maternal to offspring through breast feeding, sexual mainly from men to women and through blood exchange (blood transfusion, intravenous drug abusers, etc.) The diseases being proven to be caused by HTLV-I, include acute adult T cell leukemias as de

Urinary and sexual manifestations of patients infected by HTLV-I.

HTLV-I is considered to be a virus of low morbidity, since the principal diseases associated with this viral infection, HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) and adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL), are observed in less than 5% of infected individuals. Urinary symptoms are frequent in patients with myelopathy and consist principally of nocturia, frequency, urgency, and urinary incontinence; however, the importance of these dysfunctions and their correlation with myelopathy is still to be fully clarified. This review gives particular emphasis to the high frequenc

Cutaneous and neurologic disease associated with HTLV-I infection.

Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is the etiologic agent of HTLV-I associated myelopathy (HAM)/tropical spastic paresis (TSP), and adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL). ATLL has been associated with HTLV-I in the southeastern United States. However, to our knowledge, no case reports of HAM/TSP in association with ATLL occurring in the United States have been described. We describe a 40-year-old black woman with a 10-year history of recalcitrant psoriasiform eruption and erythrodermic flares. Medical history is additionally significant for a 2-year history of HTLV-I-associated myelopa

[Mycosis fungoides in a Gabonese patient infected with HTLV-I].

Association of human T-lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1) with T-cell malignancy is well-known but its relationship with mycosis fungoides is controversial. Typical mycosis fungoides was diagnosed at tumor stage in a 58-year-old Gabonese woman also infected with HTLV-1. Infection with lymphoma of the skin is uncommon in Africa but it is probably underestimated. Association of mycosis fungoides with retrovirus infection could be coincidental since there is a high prevalence of HTLV-1 in Gabon and the only currently recognized association is T-cell leukemia/lymphoma. However recent data indicate

HTLV-I, infective dermatitis, and tropical spastic paraparesis.

Since human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV-I) was identified in 1980 as causing human disease, it has been etiologically associated with adult T-cell lymphoma/leukemia (ATL) and tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP). More recently, several new diseases have been reported in association with this virus, including infective dermatitis of Jamaican children, which we reported in 1990. Studies on infective dermatitis have shown that these children have abnormalities of immune function, and some develop other HTLV-I associated disorders, including TSP. This paper reviews the work done on infective der

HTLV-I associated arthritis: characteristics of an HTLV-I virus infected T cell line from synovial fluid.

A T cell line from mononuclear cells in the synovial fluid of a patient with polyarthritis was established. The T cell line reacted with serum samples positive for antibodies to human T cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) and with monoclonal antibody to HTLV-I p19. In Southern blotting with an env-pX-LTR HTLV-I probe and digestion of T cell line DNA with the restriction enzymes ClaI, DraI, and PstI generated fragments that were identical to those found in two HTLV-I infected T cell lines established from adult T cell leukaemia or HTLV-I associated myelopathy. The T cell line expressed CD2,

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I)-related clinical and laboratory findings for HTLV-I-infected blood donors.

Clinical and laboratory findings were examined for 111 human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I)-infected blood donors. HTLV-I provirus loads in subjects with a family history of adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) or HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) tended to be higher than those in subjects without a family history of these conditions. There were 3 asymptomatic patients with ATL, 4 with a history of uveitis, 7 with hyperreflexia in the lower limbs, and 3 with urinary frequency in the night. The mean CD4 cell/CD8 cell ratio +/- SD was significantly lower (p<.0

Relative prevalence and risk factors of HTLV-I and HTLV-II infection in US blood donors.

The clinical significance of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type II (HTLV-II) infection, unlike that of HTLV-I, is unknown, and the major known association of HTLV-II seropositivity is with intravenous drug abuse. Screening of blood donors for HTLV-I, now routine in North America, does not distinguish this retrovirus from HTLV-II. To find out more about the seroepidemiology of and risk factors for HTLV I and II, blood from 480,000 volunteer donors in five geographically separate US urban centres was tested for antibodies to HTLV-I/II and HIV-1. Confirmed HTLV-I/II seropositive donors were the

HTLV-I infection in squirrel monkeys (Saïmiri sciureus) using autologous, homologous, or heterologous HTLV-I-transformed cell lines.

Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from three adult male squirrel monkeys (Saïmiri sciureus) were transformed by human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus type I (HTLV-I) by cocultivation with lethally irradiated human MT-2 cells. Three permanent monkey T-cell lines producing HTLV-I were obtained and characterized. Six weeks after inoculation seroconversion was observed in three of three monkeys inoculated with autologous transformed T cells and in two of three monkeys receiving homologous cells. Proviral DNA was detected in their PBMC at various times after inoculation, with the highest pro
