Patterns of parasite abundance and distribution in island populations of Galápagos endemic birds.

Parasite life-history characteristics, the environment, and host defenses determine variation in parasite population parameters across space and time. Parasite abundance and distribution have received little attention despite their pervasive effects on host populations and community dynamics. We used analyses of variance to estimate the variability of intensity, prevalence, and abundance of 4 species of lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) infecting Galápagos doves and Galápagos hawks and 1 haemosporidian parasite (Haemosporida: Haemoproteidae) infecting the doves across island populations throughout

Quantitative PCR Analysis of Haemosporidian Infection Intensity in a Temperate Bird Community.

Avian haemosporidians are vector-borne parasites with complex transmission dynamics influenced by host ecology and environmental factors. Both prevalence and parasitemia are key measures in host-parasite studies. While prevalence reflects the proportion of infected individuals in a population, parasitemia provides insights into the intensity of infection within hosts, offering a different but complementary perspective. In this study, we used quantitative PCR (qPCR) to investigate seasonal and interannual variation in haemosporidian infection intensity among 266 individuals from six bird specie

Molecular Survey of Hemosporidian Parasites in Owls in Mainland Portugal.

Owls play an important role as avian hosts for hemosporidians, overlapping habitat use and activity with the arthropod vectors, which results in susceptibility to morbidity and, in some cases, mortality upon infection. This study aimed to analyze the hemosporidians in tissues collected from individual dead owls (n=240), in various regions of mainland Portugal, primarily obtained from wildlife rehabilitation centers (WRCs). Hemosporidian species were detected using nested PCRs, targeting the cytochrome b gene of the mitochondria. For species and lineage identification, 19 positive PCR samples w

Treasure Chest in the Taxonomic Collection: Molecular Characterization and Redescription of Haemoproteus handai, with Insights into the Phylogenetic Relationship of Haemosporidian Parasites of Parrots (Psittaciformes).

Many species of avian haemosporidian parasites have been described before molecular assessment of the infections became available. This created a discrepancy between the number of parasite species described (∼300) and the available molecular information (∼5100 lineages), with numerous morphospecies having no molecular characterization and vice versa. Lethal disease was previously reported in parrots due to the abortive development of Haemoproteus species in muscular tissues. However, the disease etiology on the parasite species levels remains insufficiently understood. This study developed mol

Molecular investigation on infection by haemosporidians in three Western Palearctic species of swift (Apodidae) and their ectoparasitic louse flies.

Swifts (Apodidae) are an unusual group of birds that spend most of their lives in flight, landing only when breeding. Although this aerial lifestyle greatly reduces their likelihood of being bitten by vectors and infected by vector-born parasites, swifts can still be heavily infested during breeding by nest-based vectors such as louse flies (Hippoboscidae). Here, we investigated host, vector, and vector-borne parasite relationships in the three most widespread swift species in the Western Palearctic (WP): common swifts (Apus apus), pallid swifts (A. pallidus), and alpine swifts (Tachymarptis m

Bird Community Composition, Migration, and Environmental Factors Jointly Influence the Global Distribution of Avian Haemosporidian Lineages.

Parasite distributions are under the influence of host occurrence and tolerable environmental conditions. In vector-borne disease systems, including avian malaria, they are further constrained by the environmental niche of the vectors. The fact that avian haemosporidians occur in a large number of migratory and non-migratory species means the role of bird migration in the global distribution of avian haemosporidians is an open question. Because avian haemosporidians refer to a large number of genetic lineages that are well characterized in terms of host and geographic range, we introduce an ec

Host Traits and Avian Malaria Parasites: Understanding the Intrinsic Connections.

Parasitism can play a key role in shaping species' adaptability to environmental changes. Understanding how intrinsic traits of bird species influence susceptibility to haemosporidian infection is critical for understanding host-parasite dynamics, especially in biodiverse tropical regions. This study aimed to determine the host traits that influence the probability of haemosporidian infection in birds in a tropical country. We compiled published haemosporidian diagnoses of birds from Colombia and data on ecological, morphological, coloration, and sexual selection (dimorphism and dichromatism)

First record and molecular diversity of haemosporidian parasites in Sula leucogaster (Boddaert, 1783) from the southeastern Brazilian coast.

Avian haemosporidian parasites are protozoans transmitted by vectors, belonging to the genera Plasmodium, Haemoproteus, and Leucocytozoon, capable of infecting various bird species. The prevalence of these parasites varies depending on factors such as the habitat and geographical location of the host and vector, as well as across different bird groups. Seabirds typically exhibit low infection rates due to the absence of vectors in marine environments. This study aimed to identify and characterize the molecular diversity of Haemosporida parasites in a population of Brown Boobies (Sula leucogast

Blood parasites of chickens in Uganda and Cameroon with molecular descriptions of Leucocytozoon schoutedeni and Trypanosoma gallinarum.

Using microscopy and PCR, we determined the prevalence of blood parasites in village chickens in Uganda and Cameroon. Of 148 individuals tested, 18.3% were infected with Leucocytozoon schoutedeni (Haemosporida, Leucocytozoidae) and 4.1% were infected with Trypanosoma gallinarum (Kinetoplastida, Trypanosomatidae). No other blood parasites were detected. Subsequent phylogenetic analysis of the cytochrome b gene of L. schoutedeni identified 2 distinct lineages that were found at all 3 sampling locations in Uganda. The sequence divergence between these 2 lineages is 1.5%. One of these lineages was

A New Species of Plasmodium of the Subgenus Novyella Infecting White-Shouldered Fire-Eyes (Pyriglena leucoptera) (Aves: Thamnophilidae) in Brazil.

Bird parasites belonging to the genus Plasmodium (Haemosporida: Plasmodiidae) are found worldwide, with over 50 described species categorized into five subgenera. The subgenus Novyella comprises 22 morphologically identified species, of which 59% are genetically associated with at least one haplotype. In the Americas, only three morphospecies have their microscopic characteristics linked to a molecular signature. In this study, we described a new species of Plasmodium (Novyella) infecting a white-shouldered fire-eye (Pyriglena leucoptera) in Brazil. Molecular analysis reveals that the new spec

Recent advances in the study of avian malaria: an overview with an emphasis on the distribution of Plasmodium spp in Brazil.

Avian malaria parasites (Plasmodium) have a worldwide distribution except for Antarctica. They are transmitted exclusively by mosquito vectors (Diptera: Culicidae) and are of particular interest to health care research due to their phylogenetic relationship with human plasmodia and their ability to cause avian malaria, which is frequently lethal in non-adapted avian hosts. However, different features of avian Plasmodium spp, including their taxonomy and aspects of their life-history traits, need to be examined in more detail. Over the last 10 years, ecologists, evolutionary biologists and wild

Integrated mapping, chromosomal sequencing and sequence analysis of Cryptosporidium parvum.

The apicomplexan Cryptosporidium parvum is one of the most prevalent protozoan parasites of humans. We report the physical mapping of the genome of the Iowa isolate, sequencing and analysis of chromosome 6, and approximately 0.9 Mbp of sequence sampled from the remainder of the genome. To construct a robust physical map, we devised a novel and general strategy, enabling accurate placement of clones regardless of clone artefacts. Analysis reveals a compact genome, unusually rich in membrane proteins. As in Plasmodium falciparum, the mean size of the predicted proteins is larger than that in oth

Identification of Haemoproteus infection in an imported grey crowned crane (Balearica regulorum) in China.

Blood parasites from the order Haemosporida infect many vertebrates and cause malaria-like diseases. In this study, a haemosporidian infection was detected in a sick grey crowned crane imported into China using a combination of morphological and molecular approaches. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein and processed for morphological identification of infective parasites using stained blood smears and microscopy. No merogony occurs in the blood cells, and sporadic pigment granules were observed. Nested-PCR assays were employed for a molecular examination, which indicated that th

The evolution of primate malaria parasites: A study on the origin and diversification of Plasmodium in lemurs.

Among the primate malaria parasites, those found in lemurs have been neglected. Here, six Plasmodium lineages were detected in 169 lemurs. Nearly complete mitochondrial genomes (mtDNA, ≈6Kb) and apicoplast loci (≈6Kb) were obtained from these parasites and other Haemosporida species. Plasmodium spp. in lemurs are a diverse clade that shares a common ancestor with other primate parasites from continental Africa. Time-trees for the mtDNA were estimated under different scenarios, and the origin of the lemur clade coincides with the proposed time of their host species' most recent common ancestor

Identification of Avian and Hemoparasite DNA in Blood-Engorged Abdomens of Culex pipiens (Diptera; Culicidae) from a West Nile Virus Epidemic region in Suburban Chicago, Illinois.

Multiple mosquito-borne parasites cocirculate in nature and potentially interact. To understand the community of parasites cocirculating with West Nile virus (WNV), we screened the bloodmeal content of Culex pipiens L. mosquitoes for three common types of hemoparasites. Blood-fed Cx. pipiens were collected from a WNV-epidemic area in suburban Chicago, IL, from May to September 2005 through 2010. DNA was extracted from dissected abdomens and subject to PCR and direct sequencing to identify the vertebrate host. RNA was extracted from the head or thorax and screened for WNV using quantitative rev

Delayed post-juvenile moult in malaria-infected Eurasian blackcaps.

Parasites have their strongest impact on fitness when host defences deplete resources needed for other critical life-history stages, such as development, breeding or migration. Among birds, one greatly neglected stage that could be altered by parasites is post-juvenile moult (PJM), through which yearling juvenile birds replace their fast-generated, low-quality juvenile feathers with adult-like feathers after leaving the nest. The earlier the birds complete PJM, the earlier they will be prepared to withstand forthcoming challenges, such as adverse winter conditions or migration. We used data fr

Unraveling the Diversity of Haemosporidians in Brazilian Non-Passerine Birds: Insights from Midwestern Brazil.

Avian haemosporidians have been widely studied because they provide important insights into parasite distribution and diversity. However, most available data come from passerines, resulting in gaps regarding other bird groups, primarily due to the difficulty of sampling non-passerines in natural environments. Thus, we aimed to detect infections caused by Plasmodium spp. and Haemoproteus spp. through molecular and morphological analyses of blood samples from non-passerine birds in Midwestern Brazil. We evaluated 344 individuals from 60 species across 16 non-passerine orders. Among them, 18.89%

Haemosporidian parasites in Kansas birds: molecular and histological evidence implicating Culicoides haematopotus (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in transmission.

Haemosporidian parasites of birds are maintained through complex interactions among vertebrate hosts, arthropod vectors, and the parasites themselves, yet their vector-parasite relationships remain poorly resolved under natural conditions in North America. Haemoproteus species are among the most prevalent avian blood parasites and have been implicated in reduced host fitness and malaria-like disease. Here, we combined molecular and histological approaches to investigate Haemoproteus prevalence in wild birds and to identify potential Culicoides biting midge vectors in Kansas. Blood meals from f
