[The analysis of a mobile mental health outreach team activity: from psychiatric emergencies on the street to practice of hospitalization at home for homeless people].

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Since their creation in 2005 in France, mobile mental health outreach teams (EMPP) have been working to improve the health of the homeless who, for 30 to 50% of them, present severe mental disorders. Their missions are defined by ministerial circular's specifications. Few studies have been undertaken in France to analyze the practices of these teams' professionals, nor the characteristics of the populations with whom they are involved. The EMPP described in this paper had in 2010 a greater staff than other French EMPPs. It has 15 full-time staff, including four doctors (

Dietary choices of recovering alcoholics.

Nutritional therapy can play an important role in the rehabilitation of an alcoholic. To teach these patients proper eating habits, we need to know what they eat and whether their dietary choices are nutritionally adequate compared to the recommended daily allowances (RDA). We investigated dietary choices of 70 recovering (abstinent) alcoholics who lived in a halfway house but who ate and worked elsewhere everyday. Diets were analyzed for calories, protein, B vitamins, vitamins A and C, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, iron and zinc. We found that these recovering alcoholics ate adequate amoun

Substance use and motivation: a longitudinal perspective.

BACKGROUND: Motivation to change substance use behavior is an important component of the recovery process that has usually been studied at entry into treatment. Less studied, but equally important, is the measurement of motivation over time and the role motivation plays in subsequent substance use. OBJECTIVES: The present study sought to examine longitudinal motivation toward sobriety among residents of sober living houses. METHODS: Sober living residents (n = 167) were followed at 6-month intervals over an 18-month period and assessed for motivation and substance use outcomes at each study

Rethinking the effects of homelessness on children: resiliency and competency.

An urban family shelter in New England operates an on-site early childhood education program for the children of shelter residents and families living in the community. In contrast to the findings in much of the research on young homeless children, the case examples presented here illustrate the strengths and the coping strategies of homeless children, along with their similarities to their peers in the program who have homes. The importance of understanding the complex and varied experiences children and families have with homelessness is discussed, as well as implications for early childhood

The mental health of single homeless people in Northampton hostels.

Much research evidence about homelessness and health relates to large population centres with correspondingly large homeless populations. Such results may not necessarily apply to small towns such as Northampton. A local need was identified for information relating to health and access to health care for homeless people. Seventy five single, homeless people temporarily residing at open access hostels in Northampton were interviewed. The interviews covered: recent accommodation histories recent physical health mental health access to health care current social contacts, life style and aspiratio

Cannabis use and alcohol and drug outcomes in a longitudinal sample of sober living house residents in California.

INTRODUCTION: Some evidence suggests that cannabis may be a safer substitute for other drugs. Historically, sober living houses (SLHs) have been abstinence-based environments designed for individuals in recovery to live with others in recovery. However, the evolving legal landscape around cannabis use has left SLH operators and managers in a difficult position regarding policies related to cannabis use among residents. The primary aim of this study was to examine how cannabis use relates to alcohol use, other drug use, and related problems among SLH residents. METHODS: Baseline (N = 557), 6-m

Research in supported housing.

BACKGROUND: De-institutionalization has led to the provision of various forms of housing with or without support for people with mental illness in the community. In this paper, we review the conceptual issues related to the provision of supported housing schemes, the characteristics of residents, research methods and outcomes, and the factors influencing the quality of care provided. METHODS: A Medline and hand search of published literature was complemented by information derived from contacting expert researchers in the field. FINDINGS: There is considerable diversity of models of supporte

Capacity for self-care of persons with mental illnesses living in community residences and the ability of their surrogate families to perform health care functions.

Persons with chronic mental illnesses have a higher prevalence of medical illnesses and higher mortality rates than the general population. Those living in the community are usually linked with mental health services but are expected to manage their own medical care. The ability to manage their health care and the ability of "surrogate families" to assist them were measured among residents and staff of supervised community residences. In its surrogate role, the agency promoted routine health examinations and follow-up care. Its staff was a central resource for the residents, who sought out sta

[Long stay or short stay in a protected environment?].

The authors analysed the population of a surveyed center that has been functioning for the last 20 years in Lausanne. They noticed, after having taken into account the different variables, that this population corresponds with what one can find in the literature concerning other surveyed centers. While comparing the samples of long-term with short-term patients in the surveyed center, the authors noticed that the long-term group was composed initially by younger boarders, all single and professionally less qualified than the short-term patients. The interval between the first hospitalisation a

Predictors of substance abuse treatment outcomes in Tennessee.

In planning and implementing programs to treat substance abuse, it is important to understand which factors influence post-treatment abstinence. This article identifies and analyzes several variables important in predicting the likelihood of abstinence among substance abuse clients. The data used in this study was collected from 1,350 clients treated for alcohol or drug abuse in residential, halfway house, or outpatient facilities in Tennessee. We analyzed 22 variables as possible treatment outcome predictors by using two statistical procedures: stepwise logistic regression analysis and Quick,

Access to Hepatitis C Treatment during and after Incarceration in New Jersey, United States: A Qualitative Study.

Despite effective antiviral therapy for hepatitis C virus (HCV), people who are incarcerated and those returning to the community face challenges in obtaining HCV treatment. We aimed to explore facilitators and barriers to HCV treatment during and after incarceration. From July-November 2020 and June-July 2021, we conducted 27 semi-structured interviews with residents who were formerly incarcerated in jail or prison. The interviews were audio-recorded and professionally transcribed. We used descriptive statistics to characterize the study sample and analyzed qualitative data thematically using

Eating disorders, normative eating self-efficacy and body image self-efficacy: women in recovery homes.

Although eating disorders (EDs) and ED symptoms are common among individuals in recovery for substance abuse (SA), long-term SA treatment programmes rarely address these problems. The present study examined the prevalence of EDs among women residing in Oxford Houses--low-cost, self-governed recovery homes for SA. Further, among women both with and without an ED diagnosis, the association between duration of Oxford House residency and eating-related self-efficacy scores was examined as an indicator of potential treatment effects on ED symptoms. During a telephone assessment, participants were a

Substance abuse treatment and hospitalization among a cohort of HIV-infected individuals with alcohol problems.

BACKGROUND: We examined the association of substance abuse treatment services on hospitalization among participants in the HIV-Alcohol Longitudinal Cohort (HIV-ALC) study of HIV-infected individuals with a history of alcohol problems. METHODS: A standardized questionnaire that inquired about demographics, substance use, use of substance abuse treatment services, and hospitalization was administered to 349 HIV-ALC participants. We defined substance abuse treatment services as any of the following in the past 6 months: 12 weeks in a half-way house or residential facility, 12 visits to a substan

Primary health care services for single homeless people: defects and opportunities.

BACKGROUND: An innovative residential centre in west London during 1997-1998 helped older rough sleepers leave the streets and resettle in conventional homes. Many clients presented with multiple physical illnesses complicated by chronicity and poor management. The centre initially experienced difficulties in obtaining health care for the residents, briefly relied on an A&E department for treatment of serious and minor ailments, and latterly was served by a GP practice supported by special funding. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to describe the problems of providing at short notice pr
