[Hand disinfection as the central factor in prevention of puerperal mastitis. Clinical study and results of a survey].

The incidence of puerperal mastitis was evaluated in the course of two 12-month periods with and without additional hand disinfection at the bedside. Disinfection was available throughout both periods for all patients, mounted at the door of each room. Without additional disinfection at the bedside, 32 patients developed mastitis. With reference to the birth rate of 1095 during this period, the incidence of mastitis was 2.9%. When additional bedside disinfection was available, mastitis dropped to 8 cases per 12 months (1212 births = 0.66%) (p less than 0.001). A telephone survey, at 55 obstetr

Stability of Andes virus and its inactivation by WHO-recommended hand-rub formulations and surface disinfectants.

BACKGROUND: Hantaviruses are responsible for thousands of infections globally. In the absence of vaccines or targeted treatments for severe diseases such as haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome, medical care focuses solely on managing symptoms. As a result, preventive hygiene measures, such as disinfection, are essential to reduce transmission and minimize the virus's impact on human health. AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of commonly used disinfectants in inactivating Andes virus (ANDV) and evaluate the virus's stabilty to

A prospective study to analyse the concentration of octenidine in hand wounds after disinfection by LC-MS/MS.

Toxic reactions can appear after pressurised flushing of soft tissue with octenidine (OCT) containing disinfectants. Their use for surgical disinfection could complicate the diagnosis of possible contamination. In patients with open lacerations of their hand's subcutaneous tissue samples were taken before and after surgical disinfection with Octenisept® and analysed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). In 16 out of 20 tissue samples, OCT was detected after disinfection (lower limit of quantification (LLOQ)=10 pg/mL/mg). The concentrati

Development and virucidal activity of a novel alcohol-based hand disinfectant supplemented with urea and citric acid.

BACKGROUND: Hand disinfectants are important for the prevention of virus transmission in the health care system and environment. The development of broad antiviral spectrum hand disinfectants with activity against enveloped and non-enveloped viruses is limited due to a small number of permissible active ingredients able to inactivate viruses. METHODS: A new hand disinfectant was developed based upon 69.39 % w/w ethanol and 3.69 % w/w 2-propanol. Different amounts of citric acid and urea were added in order to create a virucidal claim against poliovirus (PV), adenovirus type 5 (AdV) and polyom

Impact of alcohol-based hand-rub disinfection on bacterial bioburden on stethoscopes in a real-world clinical setting.

In this randomized study, use of alcohol-based hand-rub disinfection significantly reduced bacterial bioburden of stethoscopes in routine clinical use. Prior cleaning of stethoscopes on the study day did not affect baseline contamination rates, which suggests that the efficacy of alcohol disinfection is short-lived and may need to be repeated between patients.

Susceptibility of Measles Virus to World Health Organization-Recommended Hand Rubs, Oral Rinses, and Surface Disinfectants.

BACKGROUND: Measles continues to pose a major public health threat worldwide. Reoccurring outbreaks are fueled by declining vaccination rates, increased global travel, migration, and disruptions in immunization programs. Consequently, hygiene measures remain essential to prevent transmission, particularly in health care settings where nosocomial infections can occur. METHODS AND RESULTS: To address this, we tested virus inactivation by common oral rinses, as primary transmission occurs via aerosols and droplets, using a quantitative suspension assay in accordance with European guidelines. We

Skin condition associated with intensive use of alcoholic gels for hand disinfection: a combination of biophysical and sensorial data.

Although hand hygiene is an important and inexpensive measure to prevent nosocomial infections in clinical settings, the compliance of healthcare workers remains low. In Europe, alcoholic hand disinfection is first choice, but there exists a limited user acceptability due to estimated adverse effects on skin condition. This study was designed to investigate skin tolerance to alcohol-based disinfecting gels and changes in skin condition depending on humectant concentration, alcohol grades, as well as type of alcohol used. A comparison of 6 alcohol-based gels was made based on a randomized doubl

Effect of a short virtual reality training on first-attempt hand-disinfection performance in an OSCE: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Reliable hygienic hand-disinfection is essential for infection prevention and control. It remains unclear whether a short VR training module improves objectively assessed procedural performance compared with conventional instruction. This single-center, parallel-group randomized controlled trial examined first-opportunity hand-disinfection performance in an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) after VR training versus a video control. METHODS: In 2025, first-year nursing students at a single Austrian University of Applied Sciences were randomized (1:1) to a 20-minute V

A preliminary analysis of hand disinfection use by travellers and their colonisation-risk with multi-resistant bacteria: A proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: International travellers have the potential to transmit multidrug-resistant bacteria. However, the role of hygiene measures during travel has yet to be investigated. METHOD: Travellers were asked about their use of disinfectants and hygiene behaviour. Stool samples were analysed for Gram-negative multi-resistant bacteria (MDRO). These data were analysed, and a new MDRO risk map was developed and compared with data from existing literature. RESULT: Of 214 travellers, 6 (2.8 %) tested positive for an MDRO before and 16 (7.5 %) after the trip, with travel in known high-risk MDRO are

Toxicological aspects of increased use of surface and hand disinfectants in Croatia during the COVID-19 pandemic: a preliminary report.

All COVID-19 prevention strategies include regular use of surface disinfectants and hand sanitisers. As these measures took hold in Croatia, the Croatian Poison Control Centre started receiving phone calls from the general public and healthcare workers, which prompted us to investigate whether the risk of suspected/symptomatic poisonings with disinfectants and sanitisers really increased. To that end we compared their frequency and characteristics in the first half of 2019 and 2020. Cases of exposures to disinfectants doubled in the first half of 2020 (41 vs 21 cases in 2019), and exposure to

In vitro-in vivo sequence studies as a method of selecting the most efficacious alcohol-based solution for hygienic hand disinfection.

The use of alcohol-based hand rubs serves to reduce hospital-acquired infections. Many products of this type are now on offer and it is essential to know how to rank their efficacy. A sequence of tests is proposed here to compare any given new alcohol-based solution against the reference solution (60% 2-isopropyl-alcohol) with 30 s of contact time: (i) in vitro (with pig skin as carrier) testing of >30 species of microorganism; (ii) in vitro assessment of residual efficacy (after 30 min of drying); (iii) in vivo study of transient microbiota (modification of the EN 1500 standard procedure) usi
