Sportverletzung Sportschaden : Organ der Gesellschaft fur Orthopadisch-Traumatologische Sportmedizin1987ger
In the Innsbruck University Clinic for Traumatology during the years 1978-1985, altogether 17,999 patients received initial treatment for injuries incurred through Alpine skiing. 3240, or 18% of these injuries were trauma to the hand. The most frequently injured area was the thumb, with 1995, or 61.6% of the cases. The most common hand injury in skiing is the socalled "ski thumb", the lesion of the ulnar ligament of the metacarpal-phalangeal joint. Finger injuries accounted for 262 cases, or 8%. The capsule-ligament lesions predominated, especially the palmar capsule lesion of the proximal int

Stab wounds of the hand should not be dismissed lightly as trifles. It may well be that deep underlying structures are destroyed even if the injury is very small, hardly visible and thus seems to be negligible. As a matter of fact, such injuries are easily overlooked particularly by the patient himself and, possibly, also by an inexperienced nurse or examiner. The most serious consequences can arise from non-diagnosed complete and incomplete injuries of tendons and nerves. The authors emphasise the importance of paying close attention to complete or partial injuries of the extensor tendons and

A systematic evaluation of the hand, looking for functional or structural damage to each of its six tissue components, is the first step in managing the acute hand problem. We review the diagnostic and therapeutic decisions that are necessary to start treatment, and especially to avoid the pitfalls and oversights that may lead to complications and continuing disability.

This study reports the causes, characteristics and treatment of injuries to the hand and wrist presented to five accident and emergency departments in a two-year survey of 13% of the Danish population. The rate of injury to the hand or wrist was 28.6% of all injuries, or 3545 per 100,000 inhabitants per year. Thirty-four percent of the accidents were domestic, 35% were leisure accidents, 26% were occupational and 5% were traffic accidents. Only 2% of the patients were admitted to hospital for further treatment or observation and 13% were referred to a hospital as out-patients. The most frequen

Growing redistribution of injuries has been recordable from winter sport activities, in recent years, with the upper extremity being more often affected than in the past. This prompted the authors to undertake follow-up checks for the purpose of verifying therapeutic success of patients treated earlier for three frequent injuries which had quite often been underestimated or even overlooked, rupture of the ulnar ligament of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb, fracture of the distal radius, and fracture of the scaphoid. Included in the follow-up check were 37 patients with rupture of the

Hand and wrist injuries in sports are some of the most common injuries reported. This review discusses common overuse injuries of the wrist including tendon injuries such as de Quervain's syndrome, subluxation of the extensor carpi ulnaris, and the common dorsal carpal impingement syndrome. The main focus of this section is the discussion of traumatic injuries to the hand in the athlete. Included is a discussion and review of fractures of the phalanges and metacarpals, common proximal interphalangeal joint injuries, and thumb carpal metacarpal and metacarpophalangeal joint injuries. OBJECTIVE: Hand injuries are a common reason for emergency room visits, and it is critical to managing the pain process effectively. This study aims to look at the demographics, pain assessment, and management of patients who visited the emergency department with hand injuries.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Healthy patients over 18 who presented to the emergency room within the first 24 hours of an acute hand injury between December 2020 and February 2021 were included. The Numerical Pain Rating Scale was employed to assess pain severity. The etiology of the trauma, pain scale, analgesic treatment,

Little is known of the scale of avoidable injuries presenting to medical services on a national level in the UK. This study aimed to assess the type and incidence of preventable wrist and hand injuries (as defined by the core research team) at a national level in the UK. 28 UK hospitals undertook a service evaluation of all hand trauma cases presenting to their units over a 2 week period in early 2021 identifying demographical and aetiological information about injuries sustained. 1909 patients were included (184 children) with a median age of 40 (IQR 25-59) years. The commonest five types of

The extensor tendon apparatus is a network consisting of two different systems, an intrinsic and an extrinsic system, which are subdivided into eight different zones. Isolated injuries in zones 1 and 2 can be treated nonoperatively, whereas injuries in zones 3-8 usually require surgical treatment. A decision on the suture technique, suture material and postoperative follow-up care is made depending on the zone of the injury. The concomitant injuries of joints, bones, nerves and vessels must be taken into consideration and treated. The outcome of a tendon injury depends on the location and seve

The hands and fingers play a vital role in everyday activities, which increases the risk for accidental injury. Imaging these potentially complex injuries is vital to successful diagnosis and treatment. Imaging techniques and best practices vary; multiple modalities might be needed to achieve an accurate diagnosis. This article discusses anatomy and common injuries of the hand and fingers. Methods for successful imaging also are described. A broad understanding of anatomy and imaging techniques enables radiologic technologists to better assist with hand trauma management.

BACKGROUND: Oztag is an Australian tag rugby code in which opponents are 'tackled' by removing Velcro tabs from their shorts. It is assumed to be safer than other higher-contact rugby codes.
METHODS: Oztag-related hand injuries were identified by a word search of the electronic emergency department records of Concord Repatriation General Hospital from January 2011 to October 2013. Clinical records were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: Twenty-eight presentations were identified. Mean age of patients was 24 years (range 13-38). Injuries included fractures, dislocations and ligamentous injuri

Dog bites to the hand and forearm are common. Although bites are usually minor, aggressive dogs may cause extensive bites developing to a public health problem. In a database review of dog bites to the hand applied to Emergency Department or to the Department of Hand Surgery in Malmö, Sweden 2008-2009, we found 81 cases [42 men and 39 women; median age 45 (range 2-88) years]. Three of 81 (4%) were children younger than 11 years. Six of the 81 (8%) patients included had bilateral injuries. Seventy-five patients were treated at the Department of Hand Surgery, where 31 of 75 (41%) were admitted t

BACKGROUND: Hand injuries are considered to be the most frequent body injuries, the treatment of which is of long duration and great community expense. The aim of this study was to define the most frequent causes of hand injury in the investigated materials; the severity of hand injuries and outcome of treatment performed in the typical trauma surgery ward; and overall costs of hand-injury treatment.
METHODS: Between 1987 and 2000, 1199 patients (average age 37.0 years (+/- 15) were treated for complex hand injuries in II Surgery Clinic in Cracow. Causes, places, and mechanisms of hand injuri

The immediate and long-term outcome of a mutilating hand injury can be positively influenced by health care professionals adopting a biopsychosocial perspective toward treatment and management. Such an injury produces a psychological and social impact that should be openly and candidly addressed with the injured individual and with the family. The earlier and the more skillfully these issues are addressed, the more likely it is that psychological factors will not impede functional outcome.

Mutilating hand injuries result in injury to multiple anatomic structures, which increases the possibility that secondary procedures or staged reconstruction will be necessary. Secondary procedures often are required to provide stable wound coverage, restore sensation, provide bony stability, increase range of motion, or allow prehension, all of which are performed to improve hand function. The patient, the surgeon, and the therapist must all work together to achieve the best functional result following a severe mutilating hand injury.

The Authors discuss their experience with the use of various flaps (radial artery, groin and abdomen) in the primary or delayed cover of skin defect in the hand, in a total number of 20 cases. All the three types of flaps took up well in 3-4 weeks with minimal complications. The Authors preferred the radial artery flap to the groin and abdominal flaps, in that order.

Injuries to the hand are very common in children. Because of children's tremendous capability of repair, fingertip injuries can usually be treated with dressings, and complicated closures with flaps or grafts can be avoided. Fractures are common, and the treating physician must be aware of the various ephiphyseal injuries that can occur in the hand. Because children are so active, if the hand must be immobilized, a long arm cast or valpeau dressing will usually be required.

Common injuries to the hand and wrist of athletes have been discussed under the headings of ligament injuries, fractures, tendon injuries, and neurovascular injuries. Although the frequency and mechanisms of certain injuries may be different in the athlete than in the nonathlete, the principles of proper early diagnosis and adequate treatment are the same whether the patient is an athlete or not.
