An Analysis of Hand Size and Grip Strength in a Working Population in Bogotá, Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Handgrip strength (HGS) has been extensively studied for its clinical and industrial significance, often linked to anthropometric measures like height, weight, and hand dimensions. In Colombia, research on these correlations exists but is fragmented and methodologically varied, limiting the ability to generalize findings. This lack of standardization highlights the need for a unified approach. This study aimed to address this gap by analyzing HGS in the Colombian context. METHODS: Overall, 678 subjects (48.9% female and 51.1% male) were enrolled in 2022. They were aged between 18

Association of phenotypic frailty and hand grip strength with telomere length in SLE.

OBJECTIVE: Frailty and objective hand grip strength (one of the components of the frailty phenotype) are both risk factors for worse health outcomes in SLE. Whether telomere length, an established cellular senescence marker, is a biologic correlate of the frailty phenotype and hand grip strength in patients with SLE is not clear. First, we aimed to evaluate differences in telomere length between frail and non-frail women with SLE and then assessed whether frailty or hand grip strength is differentially associated with telomere length after adjusting for relevant confounders. METHODS: Women ≥1

Grip strength characteristics using force-time curves in rheumatoid hands.

The use of force-time curves in rheumatoid hands was investigated to assess peak force, average force, total grip time, area under the curve, and variability of the plateau region of the curves to identify the impact of different rheumatoid hand deformities on grip strength. We studied 43 patients - 10 men and 33 women - with established rheumatoid arthritis affecting their hands. Mean age was 61 years and mean duration of hand involvement was 13 years. Of the 86 hands, 38 had no finger deformity, eight had metacarpophalangeal joint ulnar deviation without any additional finger deformities, 16

Hand anthropometry, grip strength, and manual dexterity: A correlational study among dental students.

OBJECTIVE: Hand anthropometry, grip strength, and manual dexterity are fundamental to the safe and the effective performance of dental procedures. While these factors are individually important, their interrelationships in dental students remain insufficiently explored. This study aimed to examine the correlation of hand anthropometric dimensions with grip strength, and manual dexterity among dental students, and to evaluate their potential implications for dental education and ergonomic instrument design. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 100 dental students. Thirty hand anthropom

One third of people exert greater handgrip strength with their non-dominant hand.

It is unknown whether non-dominant handgrip strength is more strongly associated with health-related quality of life than dominant handgrip strength. This analytical cross-sectional study aimed to determine the comparative association of dominant versus non-dominant handgrip strength with health-related quality of life. Bilateral handgrip strength assessments were performed, and health-related quality of life was assessed using the Short Form-36 questionnaire. A total of 229 participants were evaluated (49.6 ± 5.2 years; 29.9 ± 4.73 kg/m2; 52.8% female; 96.1% right-handed). Dominant handgrip s

Novel method for rubber hand illusion strength measurement based on inverse multidimensional scaling.

In the present study, we developed a novel self-report measurement method for the rubber hand illusion (RHI) strength based on inverse multidimensional scaling (MDS). In the preregistered study consisting of two experiments, participants experienced the RHI in synchronous and asynchronous conditions (Experiment 1) as well as the RHI and the arm immobilization imaginative suggestion (Experiment 2). In each condition, participants repeatedly arranged items related to distinct bodily-related experiences (including RHI or suggestion) in accordance with the perceived similarity between them. Short-term effects of running exercise on pinch strength, grip strength, and manual dexterity of the dominant and non-dominant hands.

Occupations including first responders and military require manual tasks; therefore changes in hand strength and dexterity could affect performance. We hypothesised that pinch strength, grip strength, and dexterity will change after unloaded and loaded exercise. Twenty-four male (25 ± 4.0 yrs; 86.3 ± 9.3 kg) and 10 female (25 ± 6.0 yrs; 62.1 ± 5.9 kg) participants completed 3 conditions for 5 minutes: (1) no exercise (2) run with no load at 3.0 m/s and (3) run wearing a 9.1 kg belt. Heart rate was different among conditions (p ≤ 0.05). Pinch strength was significantly different for the non-dom

Estimation of Hand Grip Strength Using a Grip Force Transducer in Healthy Volunteers.

Background Hand grip strength (HGS) is a vital measure of muscular function and serves a pivotal role in the identification of functional impairments, as well as in evaluating the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions in individuals with hand or upper extremity injuries undergoing rehabilitation. HGS represents a simple, objective, and reliable indicator of physical status, muscular performance, cardiovascular fitness, and functional disability. The primary objective of the study was to estimate HGS using a grip force transducer and to establish normative reference data for a healthy popu

Age- and gender-stratified adult myometric reference values of isometric intrinsic hand strength.

STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive normative. INTRODUCTION: Intrinsic hand strength can be impacted by hand arthritis, peripheral nerve injuries, and spinal cord injuries. Grip dynamometry does not isolate intrinsic strength, and manual muscle testing is not sensitive to change in grades 4 and 5. The Rotterdam Intrinsic Hand Myometer is a reliable and valid test of intrinsic hand strength; however, no adult normative data are available. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To describe age- and gender-stratified intrinsic hand strength norms in subjects aged 21 years and above and to determine if factors known to pr
