Handwriting is a vital skill for everyday human activities. It has a wealth of information about writers' characteristics and can hint toward underlying neurological conditions, such as Parkinson's disease, autism, dyslexia, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Many previous studies have reported a link between personality and individual differences in handwriting, but the evidence for the relationship tends to be anecdotal in nature. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we examined whether the association between personality traits and handwriting was instantiat

BACKGROUND: First graders born prematurely perform poorly on handwriting speed and legibility. However, whether there are specific legibility factors in which preterm children demonstrate difficulty remains unknown. In addition, handwriting performance beyond the first grade and the influence of sex on handwriting performance in preterm children are still unclear. We aimed to investigate the influence of prematurity and sex on multiple dimensions of handwriting in grade two and to identify the contributors to performance.
METHODS: Sixty-three preterm (34 boys and 29 girls) and 67 full-term (2

Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder typically defined by multiple motor tics and at least one sound tic, beginning in childhood or in adolescence. Handwriting is one of the most impaired school activities for TS patients because of the presence of tics that hamper learning processes. In this paper, we present a case of handwriting tics in a TS patient highlighting the main features.

The aim of this study was to investigate the Chinese handwriting performance of typical children and children with dyslexia, and to examine whether speed and accuracy of handwriting could reliably discriminate these two groups of children. One hundred and thirty-seven children with dyslexia and 756 typical children were recruited from main stream primary schools for the study. They were requested to copy 90 Chinese characters using the Chinese Handwriting Assessment Tool (CHAT) jointly developed by a project team from two universities in Hong Kong. The process of handwriting was recorded and t

Previous literature has indicated that linguistic and motor processes influence each other during written sentence production, and that the scope of this influence varies according to spelling ability or cognitive resources available. This study investigated how the spelling deficits associated with dyslexia affect the dynamics of the interaction between central and peripheral processes and the level of anticipation that can be observed in word spelling in the context of a sentence to dictation task. Children 9-12-year-olds with and without dyslexia wrote sentences to dictation in which the le

BackgroundHandwriting changes are recognised as an early manifestation of Parkinson's disease. Whilst isolated rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder (iRBD) is strongly associated with future Parkinson's diagnosis, changes in handwriting remain under-explored.ObjectiveTo assess the handwriting of people with iRBD and develop a rating scale for detection of early disease clinical hallmarks.MethodsCross-sectional study involving 33 people with polysomnography-confirmed iRBD and 29 controls. Participants copied a standard sentence using pen and paper. A graphologist analysed each script blin

BACKGROUND: Essential tremor (ET) is among the most common neurological disorders, requiring precise diagnosis and severity assessment for personalized and effective management.
METHODS: This study explores an innovative approach to evaluate ET severity using the gold-standard Archimedes spiral test. The family-based dataset covers the entire range of tremor severity, from very mild (level 1) to advanced stages, offering a valuable resource for studying early diagnosis and tracking disease progression. The proposed method introduces a machine learning pipeline that combines Principal Componen

With over 55 million people globally affected by dementia and nearly 10 million new cases reported annually, Alzheimer's disease is a prevalent and challenging neurodegenerative disorder. Despite significant advancements in machine learning techniques for Alzheimer's disease detection, the widespread adoption of deep learning models raises concerns about their explainability. The lack of explainability in deep learning models for online handwriting analysis is a critical gap in the literature in the context of Alzheimer's disease detection. This paper addresses this challenge by interpreting p

BACKGROUND: The neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease (AD) can result in progressive decline in both cognitive functions and motor skills, which have critical need for accurate early diagnosis. However, current diagnosis approaches primarily rely on timely clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, which impede widely application for potential patients. Leveraging handwriting as a diagnostic tool offers significant potential for identifying AD in its early stages.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop an efficient, rapid, and accurate method for early diagnosis of AD by ut

INTRODUCTION: Handwriting reflects the integration of cognitive and motor functions, making it a potential indicator of neurodegenerative changes. Handwriting deterioration often mirrors cognitive and motor decline in dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, objective assessment methods remain limited. This study is based on the AD-HS instrument, which includes 42 handwriting features and three linguistic features. Their assessment is non-trivial. To ensure an objective and reliable evaluation, the features are given exact and unambiguous definitions. The formal, quantitative

Diagnosing Parkinson's disease (PD) promptly, accessibly and effectively is crucial for improving patient outcomes, yet reaching this goal remains a challenge. Here we developed a diagnostic pen featuring a soft magnetoelastic tip and ferrofluid ink, capable of sensitively and quantitatively converting both on-surface and in-air writing motions into high-fidelity, analyzable signals for self-powered PD diagnostics. The diagnostic pen's working mechanism is based on the magnetoelastic effect in its magnetoelastic tip and the dynamic movement of the ferrofluid ink. To validate the clinical poten

BACKGROUND: Spiral drawings and handwriting tasks have long been used to assess the severity of essential tremor, but these motor tasks are somewhat less objective as the rules for scoring are not based on firm objective amplitude-based criteria. Publishing the best examples of each of the possible 0-4 ratings for these items could reduce scoring variance.
METHODS: 21 members of the Tremor Research Group each rated 94 spirals and 64 handwriting samples using TETRAS scoring criteria. For each sample, the most frequently reported score (mode; maximum of 21) was determined. Ratings not adjacent

The analysis of the writing gesture has been successfully investigated in the diagnosis of age-related diseases, but the current technologies and methods still do not allow the ecological daily monitoring of handwriting, mostly because they rely on standardized writing protocols. In this study, we first designed and validated a novel electronic ink pen, equipped with motion and writing force sensing, for the ecological daily-life monitoring of handwriting in uncontrolled environments. We used the pen to acquire writing activities from healthy adults, from which we computed useful handwriting a

Motor dysfunction is a common sign of neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), but may be difficult to detect, especially in the early stages. In this work, we examine the behavior of a wide array of interpretable features extracted from the handwriting signals of 113 subjects performing multiple tasks on a digital tablet, as part of the Neurological Signals dataset. The aim is to measure their effectiveness in characterizing NDs, including AD and PD. To this end, task-agnostic and task-specific features are extracted from 14 distinct task

Subtle changes in fine motor control and quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are important in screening for early dementia in primary care populations. In this study, an automated, non-invasive and rapid detection protocol for mild cognitive impairment based on handwriting kinetics and quantitative EEG analysis was proposed, and a classification model based on a dual fusion of feature and decision layers was designed for clinical decision-marking. Seventy-nine volunteers (39 healthy elderly controls and 40 patients with mild cognitive imp

INTRODUCTION: Patients with bipolar disorder have motor skill deficiency and cognitive dysfunction. It is suggested that these deficiencies are related to the neurodevelopmental course of the disease. The aim of this study was to examine whether or not there was a change in the handwriting of patients with bipolar disorder in periods of mania and remission.
METHOD: Two samples of handwriting and signature were taken from the cases, one on admission before treatment and one just after discharge. The first sample was taken in the period when the patients hospitalised with manic episode before m

Current models of writing do not sufficiently address the complex relationship between the 2 transcription skills: spelling and handwriting. For children with dyslexia and beginning writers, it is conceivable that spelling ability will influence rate of handwriting production. Our aim in this study was to examine execution speed and temporal characteristics of handwriting when completing sentence-copying tasks that are free from composing demands and to determine the predictive value of spelling, pausing, and motor skill on handwriting production. Thirty-one children with dyslexia (Mage = 9 ye

Muscular hyperactivity during handwriting, irregular and jerky scripts, as well as awkward and slowed pen movements are the cardinal symptoms of writer's cramp. Accordingly, impaired kinematics and increased force have been reported in writer's cramp. However, the relationship between these symptoms has rarely been investigated. In addition, measurements of finger forces have been restricted to the vertical pen pressure. In the present study, the pen of a graphic tablet was equipped with a force sensor matrix to measure also the grip force produced against the pen barrel despite highly variabl
