Deciphering wine fermentation through microbiota transplantation and synthetic yeast communities.

Microbial communities play a central role in fermentation dynamics and in wine quality, by driving the fermentation process and shaping the sensory and chemical profiles of wine. Consequently, although considerable attention has been given to inoculation strategies, including commercial starter cultures, pied-de-cuve, and spontaneous fermentation, the impact of transplanting an entire microbial community independently of its original matrix has not yet been evaluated. This study compared grape berry surface microbiota transplantation by berry rinsing with the traditional pied-de-cuve approach,

Response of Wild Spotted Wing Drosophila (Drosophila suzukii) to Microbial Volatiles.

The olfactory cues used by various animals to detect and identify food items often include volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by food-associated microorganisms. Microbial VOCs have potential as lures to trap animal pests, including insect crop pests. This study investigated microorganisms whose VOCs are attractive to natural populations of the spotted wing drosophila (SWD), an invasive insect pest of ripening fruits. The microorganisms readily cultured from wild SWD and SWD-infested fruits included yeasts, especially Hanseniaspora species, and various bacteria, including Proteobacteria

Glycerol and other fermentation products of apiculate wine yeasts.

Ninety-six strains of apiculate wine yeasts were studied for their ability to produce glycerol, acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate, sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide in synthetic medium. Hanseniaspora guilliermondii produced smaller quantities of glycerol, acetaldehyde and hydrogen sulphide than Kloeckera apiculata, whereas the production of ethyl acetate and sulphur dioxide was found to be similar. Strains characterized by different capacities and properties were found for both species. The existence of apiculate strains differing in secondary compound production is of technological interest, as

Exploring Saccharomycopsis vini as a novel parasitoid-friendly attractant for efficient attract-and-kill of Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

Effective management of the fruit pest Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae) requires new strategies to reduce insecticide use and minimize their negative impact on beneficial organisms. This study evaluated the effectiveness of Saccharomycopsis vini supernatant, a formulation that retains attractive cues while offering improved storage and handling conditions compared to the non-sterile yeast suspension. In recent years, yeast-based attract-and-kill approaches have shown strong potential, with Hanseniaspora uvarum widely studied as an attractant. However, little attention has

Differential Attraction of Summer and Winter Morphs of Spotted Wing Drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, to Yeasts.

Drosophila suzukii is a pest of soft and stone fruits that is attracted to yeast volatile metabolites. Drosophila suzukii has distinct summer and winter morphs which are found in different habitats. Complex communities of yeasts likely differ between habitats and thus we hypothesized morphs differ in their attraction to yeast volatiles from different species and combinations of species. We presented D. suzukii with yeast species in isolation and in combinations, as either post-culture mixes or co-cultured, and measured activity of the flies in laboratory choice tests with a Locomotor Activity

Longitudinal alterations of gut mycobiota during 2 years after COVID-19 and its correlation with pulmonary sequela.

UNLABELLED: Pulmonary sequelae associated with COVID-19 are an increasing concern. Emerging evidence suggests that gut dysbiosis may contribute to post-acute COVID-19 syndromes; yet, the specific link between gut mycobiota and pulmonary sequelae remains unclear. We conducted a prospective study with 46 COVID-19 patients and 37 healthy controls. Longitudinal assessments of gut mycobiota were performed at admission, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years post-discharge using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 3-4 sequencing. At the 2-year follow-up, pulmonary function tests and chest computed tomography (

The sensitivity of yeasts and yeasts-like fungi to copper and sulfur could explain lower yeast biodiversity in organic vineyards.

Although differences in yeast biodiversity have often been found between vineyards subjected to organic protection or conventional protection, little is known about the effect of copper and sulfur fungicides (the only fungicides allowed in organic farming) on yeast populations. The sensitivity to copper and sulfur of 158 yeast isolates of seven different species (Aureobasidium pullulans, Hanseniaspora guilliermondii, H. uvarum, Metschnikowia sp., Pichia membranifaciens, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Starmerella bacillaris) was evaluated. The species A. pullulans and St. bacillaris appeared to b

Biotechnological potential of Non-Saccharomyces yeasts to modulate flavor profiles in specialty coffee fermentation.

Yeast inoculation in coffee during Self-Induced Anaerobic Fermentation (SIAF) has attracted attention for exploring the fermentative potential of both starter cultures and native microbiota. While Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Torulaspora delbrueckii yeasts have been extensively studied, the role of the other non-Saccharomyces yeasts in coffee fermentation remains underexplored. This study evaluated the fermentative performance of five non-Saccharomyces yeasts (Pichia kluyveri CCMA0237, Hanseniaspora uvarum CCMA0236, Wickerhamomyces anomalus CCMA1640, Meyerozyma caribbica CCMA1738, and Candida

Yeast-based attract-and-kill strategies for Drosophila suzukii management without disrupting honey bee activity.

Attract-and-kill strategies are effective, sustainable pest control methods. Formulations combining the insecticide spinosad, at a lower dose than conventional methods, with the Drosophila-associated yeast Hanseniaspora uvarum have shown promising results. Recently, Saccharomycopsis vini was identified as the most attractive yeast for ovipositing females. In this study, the potential of S. vini for use in attract-and-kill formulations against D. suzukii was evaluated alongside H. uvarum. Behavioural assays demonstrated that D. suzukii preferred S. vini when both yeasts are simultaneously prese
