[Acute interstitial nephritis and hantavirus infection].

Acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) is a cause of acute kidney injury and characterized by an inflammation of the tubulointerstitial space, leading to a decline in kidney function. Multiple etiologies can cause AIN including medications, autoimmune diseases and infections. A multiplicity of drugs is associated with AIN, while antibiotics (especially beta-lactams), proton-pump inhibitors (PPI) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) are the most common. The pathognomonic triad of exanthema, fever and eosinophilia is rarely present in AIN patients. Treatment of medication-associated A

Severity Biomarkers in Puumala Hantavirus Infection.

Annually, over 10,000 cases of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) are diagnosed in Europe. Puumala hantavirus (PUUV) causes most of the European HFRS cases. PUUV causes usually a relatively mild disease, which is rarely fatal. However, the severity of the infection varies greatly, and factors affecting the severity are mostly unrevealed. Host genes are known to have an effect. The typical clinical features in PUUV infection include acute kidney injury, thrombocytopenia, and increased vascular permeability. The primary target of hantavirus is the endothelium of the vessels of differen

Coagulopathy in Acute Puumala Hantavirus Infection.

Puumala hantavirus (PUUV) causes a hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), also called nephropathia epidemica (NE), which is mainly endemic in Europe and Russia. The clinical features include a low platelet count, altered coagulation, endothelial activation, and acute kidney injury (AKI). Multiple connections between coagulation pathways and inflammatory mediators, as well as complement and kallikrein-kinin systems, have been reported. The bleeding symptoms are usually mild. PUUV-infected patients also have an increased risk for disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and thrombosis

Cardiopulmonary involvement in Puumala hantavirus infection.

BACKGROUND: Hantavirus infections cause potentially life-threatening disease in humans world-wide. Infections with American hantaviruses may lead to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome characterised by severe cardiopulmonary distress with high mortality. Pulmonary involvement in European Puumala hantavirus (PUUV) infection has been reported, whereas knowledge of potential cardiac manifestations is limited. We aimed to comprehensively investigate cardiopulmonary involvement in patients with PUUV-infection. METHODS: Twenty-seven hospitalised patients with PUUV-infection were examined with lung functi

Epidemiology, virology and clinical aspects of hantavirus infections: an overview.

At the end of 2019 and 2020s, a wave of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) epidemics worldwide has catalyzed a new era of 'communicable infectious diseases'. However, the world is not currently prepared to deal with the growing burden of COVID-19, with the unexpected arrival of Hantavirus infection heading to the next several healthcare emergencies in public. Hantavirus is a significant class of zoonotic pathogens of negative-sense single-stranded ribonucleic acid (RNA). Hemorrhagic renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) are the two major clinical manifestations. T

Eosinophilia during Hantavirus infection: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: There are emerging eosinophil-related considerations concerning viral infections. The role of eosinophils has poorly been evaluated during Hantavirus infection. METHODS: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of eosinophilia (defined as an eosinophil count above 500 cells/mm3) during haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in a large cohort of patients, and to identify factors associated with eosinophilia. RESULTS: Among 387 patients hospitalized for HFRS, 98 (25.3%) had eosinophilia. By univariate analysis, eosinophilia was significantly associated with more

Hantavirus and tuberculosis co-infection in an Indian child.

Hantaviruses are a group of antigenically distinct viruses carried out in rodents and insectivores. Humans are accidental hosts and get infected by aerosols generated from contaminated urine, faeces and saliva of infected rodents. Hantaviruses are identified as aetiological agents of two human diseases, haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Hantavirus causing pulmonary renal disease has rarely been reported in children in India. Hantavirus infection is uncommon under the age of 12 years. We report a 9-year-old girl from Mumbai, India with fever, bilateral pl

Human Dobrava-Belgrade hantavirus infection, Kosovo.

Here we describe an acute Dobrava-Belgrade virus (DOBV) infection that presented as severe hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in an active-duty U.S. soldier. The infection was acquired in northern Kosovo in spring 2013. Amplification of DOBV genome segments directly from the patient's serum sample was successfully performed. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the strain belong to DOBV genotype Dobrava and is closely related to strains circulating in Southeast Europe and Slovakia. Thus, our case confirms that DOBV genotype Dobrava is able to cause a severe form of HFRS, especiall

Acute hantavirus infection or renal transplant rejection.

Hantaviruses belong to the so-called emerging pathogens that are transmitted to humans by infected rodents and their excreta. In Central Europe, hantavirus infections usually occur in a mild to moderate form of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. In contrast to the mostly benign or even asymptomatic course of hantavirus infections in previously healthy individuals, the acute hantavirus infection in kidney transplant recipients represents an exceptional situation regarding diagnosis and therapy. We describe the case of a 44-year-old kidney transplant recipient with acute renal transplant fai

Characterization of shock in a hamster model of hantavirus infection.

Human hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) due to Andes, sin nombre and other hantaviruses is characterized by severe pulmonary capillary leak and cardiogenic shock. Hamsters, the only animal manifesting HCPS-like disease, were instrumented with radiotelemeters that enabled ambulatory intracarotid blood pressure recording within an animal biosafety level-4 facility. Following infection with Andes virus, blood pressure and heart rate decreased slowly in a biphasic manner during the first 7 days of infection, followed by a rapid fall in pressure and rapid increase in heart rate during the

Hantavirus infection: Neurologic manifestations should not be overlooked.

Hantavirus infection is primarily associated with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS), with predominant renal and pulmonary involvement. However, neurological manifestations affecting both the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS) are increasingly recognized. We conducted a narrative review of the literature to summarize the current evidence regarding hantavirus-associated neurological involvement. Reported CNS manifestations included encephalitis, encephalopathy, seizures, meningitis, neurocognitive alterations

Long-Term Consequences of Puumala Hantavirus Infection.

Several viral infections are associated with acute and long-term complications. During the past two years, there have been many reports on post-infectious symptoms of the patients suffering from COVID-19 disease. Serious complications occasionally occur during the acute phase of Puumala orthohantavirus caused nephropathia epidemica. Severe long-term consequences are rare. Fatigue for several weeks is quite common. Hormonal insufficiencies should be excluded if the patient does not recover normally.

Hantavirus Infection Is Inhibited by Griffithsin in Cell Culture.

Andes virus (ANDV) and Sin Nombre virus (SNV), highly pathogenic hantaviruses, cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in the Americas. Currently no therapeutics are approved for use against these infections. Griffithsin (GRFT) is a high-mannose oligosaccharide-binding lectin currently being evaluated in phase I clinical trials as a topical microbicide for the prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifiers: NCT04032717, NCT02875119) and has shown broad-spectrum in vivo activity against other viruses, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavi

A neuropathic pain syndrome associated with hantavirus infection.

Hantaviruses are a group of single-stranded RNA viruses of the Bunyaviridae family. "New World" hantaviruses cause hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in North America. HCPS carries with it significant mortality and those patients who survive the disease are often left with substantial morbidity. Neurologic complications of hantavirus infections are rare, with only sparse cases of central nervous system involvement having been documented in the literature. To our knowledge, there are no reports of hantavirus infection contributing to peripheral nervous system dysfunction. Here we report

Hantavirus infection: a case report from India.

The clinical presentation of hantavirus infections in India is unclear. We report here a case of hantavirus infection in a 46 year old quarry worker presenting with fever, abdominal pain, jaundice, thrombocytopenia and renal dysfunction. Seroconversion and rising anti-hantavirus IgG titers were taken as evidence of hantavirus infection. Clinicians should consider hantavirus infections in the differential diagnosis of acute febrile illness along with scrub typhus, leptospirosis and dengue.

A retrospective study of hantavirus infection in Kinmen, Taiwan.

In this retrospective study, 140 serum samples collected from 85 scrub typhus-negative patients in Kinmen Island in 2000 were tested for antibodies to hantavirus using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Seven patients (8.23%) were confirmed as having hantavirus infection as demonstrated by increased hantavirus-specific immunoglobulin M and/or immunoglobulin G antibodies in their convalescent serum samples. Analysis of indirect immunofluorescence assay showed that Seoul type was the etiologic agent. Serosurvey of rodents caught in the resident township of these hantavirus-infected human cases s

Three-week incubation period for hantavirus infection.

Occasionally a case report can provide enormous insight into the pathogenesis of an infectious disease. In this instance, 2 Iowa boys were bitten by the same mouse on May 1, 1999. Three weeks later, both boys developed sin nombre hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Thus, the incubation period of hantavirus infection has been documented. Both survived; one of the 2 boys continued to have a very high titer of hantavirus antibody 4 years after the mouse bite.
