Active Lubrication Brakes in Tabletop and Hand-Held Haptic Surgical Drilling Simulators.

Haptic user interfaces that provide both kinesthetic and vibrotactile feedback have strong potential to enhance a wide range of medical training simulations. Yet, designing such devices remains challenging due to constraints related to integration, workspace, cost, and the need for diverse feedback types. To address these issues, we investigated the applicability of a novel type of brake based on the active lubrication principle. This actuator is compact, low-cost, and able to deliver both kinesthetic and vibrotactile feedback. To demonstrate its advantages, we focused on maxillofacial drillin

Propeller-Based Handheld Force-Feedback Device for Navigation.

This article presents an evaluation of CrazyJoystick, a propeller-based handheld force-feedback device, for spatial navigation tasks in real-world and virtual reality environments. Building upon prior work validating the device's on-demand aerial deployment and directional cue discriminability, we investigated whether propeller-based kinesthetic torque cues can support effective wayfinding during continuous locomotion. We developed navigation-specific algorithms that generate egocentric directional cues using hierarchical decision logic optimized for dynamic heading corrections. Two user studi

Multi-Dimensional Perception of Two-Channel Skin-Stretch: Effects of Cue Pattern and Spatial Configuration.

Assistive robots lack natural proprioceptive feedback, often forcing users to rely on vision. With recent advances, haptic interfaces can now accommodate the multidimensional nature of proprioceptive information. Skin-stretch is one promising haptic modality to provide proprioceptive information that resembles natural body mechanisms and conveys both magnitude and direction information, enabling compact multi-channel designs. While prior studies have examined perceptibility and channel interference, the ability of participants to integrate information across multiple channels remains not well

Horizontal Plane Haptic Redirection: Realizing Haptic Feedback for the Virtual Inclined Plane in VR.

Some interactions in virtual environments need to be operated on inclined planes. If a real inclined plane can be found in the real environment that corresponds exactly to the angle of the virtual inclined plane to provide haptic feedback, the user's immersion can be enhanced. However, it is not easy to find such a real inclined plane in the real environment. We proposed a horizontal plane haptic redirection scheme, where users interacting with virtual inclined planes in virtual environments can obtain haptic feelings by using real horizontal planes that are easily available in the real world

From Keystrokes to Auditory Textures: Structural Acoustic Analysis of an Emergent Haptic Soundscape.

This paper examines emergent environmental haptics via structural acoustic analysis of Babbling Brook, a large-scale installation of forty solenoid-actuated computer keyboards (eighty solenoids) and an eight-channel synthetic keystroke layer. Whereas most arts-haptics research addresses direct-contact interfaces and wearables for individual users, environmental phenomena are difficult to measure in walk-through galleries and have received little attention. The work spans four density modes: at low densities listeners perceive discrete keystrokes, while at high densities the auditory texture ap

Feedback Type May Change the EMG Pattern and Kinematics During Robot Supported Upper Limb Reaching Task.

Haptic interfaces and virtual reality (VR) technology have been increasingly introduced in rehabilitation, facilitating the provision of various feedback and task conditions. However, correspondence between the feedback/task conditions and movement strategy during reaching tasks remains a question. To investigate movement strategy, we assessed velocity parameters and peak latency of electromyography. Ten neuromuscularly intact volunteers participated in the measurement using haptic interface and VR. Concurrent visual feedback and various terminal feedback (e.g., visual, haptic, visual and hapt

Recognizing emotions induced by wearable haptic vibration using noninvasive electroencephalogram.

The integration of haptic technology into affective computing has led to a new field known as affective haptics. Nonetheless, the mechanism underlying the interaction between haptics and emotions remains unclear. In this paper, we proposed a novel haptic pattern with adaptive vibration intensity and rhythm according to the volume, and applied it into the emotional experiment paradigm. To verify its superiority, the proposed haptic pattern was compared with an existing haptic pattern by combining them with conventional visual-auditory stimuli to induce emotions (joy, sadness, fear, and neutral)

"Feeling" the Stretch: Enhancing Embodiment in Virtual Arm Elongation Through Spatiotemporal Modulation of Visio-Haptic Feedback.

The perceived realism of virtual body illusions, such as arm elongation, is dependent on congruent sensory feedback. This paper explores the effects of visio-haptic stimulation on the sense of embodiment in Virtual Reality (VR). We conducted three experiments. The first identified the optimal parameters for vibrotactile feedback by varying stimulation location and motor activation duration (250, 500, 750 ms) during a fixed visual task of 40% arm elongation over 18 seconds. We found that sequential stimulations along the entire arm with a 500ms duration per motor were the most effective. From t

CathSym: Device and Method to Bring Haptic Feedback to Urinary Catheterization Training.

Urinary catheterization is one of the most widely taught procedures in the medical field. Current simulation-based training methods allow the students to be trained on non-realistic mannequins that do not adequately develop their psychomotor skills. This lack of proper training translates into increased likelihood of the medical professional causing damage to the patients' urethra in the form of false passages when faced with a difficult catheterization. The leading cause of this damage is the overuse of force that diverts the catheter head into the soft tissue. With the emergence of haptic fe

Intuitive Cell Manipulation Microscope System with Haptic Device for Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection Simplification.

In recent years, the demand for effective intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) for the treatment of male infertility has increased. The ICSI operation is complicated as it involves delicate organs and requires a high level of skill. Several cell manipulation systems that do not require such skills have been proposed; notably, several automated methods are available for cell rotation. However, these methods are unfeasible for the delicate ICSI medical procedure because of safety issues. Thus, this study proposes a microscopic system that enables intuitive micropipette manipulation using a ha

Write Together: Using Haptic Coupling to Enhance Children's Handwriting.

The acquisition of handwriting is a challenging task for children, requiring consistent exercise throughout primary school. Many children struggle to develop fluent handwriting, which in turn may impact their academic success and affect their self-esteem. The emergence of new technologies supporting handwriting exercise and allowing active interactions with educators, caregivers, and/or peers has led researchers to explore the potential use of these new tools. Studies show that haptic technology and exploiting experts' trajectory feedback may improve students' performance better than one-way i

Investigating the Effectiveness of Haptic Resistive Force Feedback to Improve Tremors in Parkinson's Disease: A Training Impact Study.

The goal of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of haptic resistive force feedback in improving the upper limb tremors in Parkinson's Disease (PD) during a button push task. We developed a haptic-mixed reality (HMR) button push simulation system that provides virtual button touch feedback synchronized with mixed reality 3D buttons and various levels of kinesthetic resistance force against hand movements. Two user studies were conducted: one to ensure the system's usability with 25 healthy individuals, and another to measure tremor improvement over a five-day training program with s

The increasing sensory richness of digitally-mediated experience.

Digital interfaces were once sensorially sparse. Contemporary technologies have changed this dramatically, expanding the sensory richness of digital interfaces across visual, auditory, haptic, olfactory, and even gustatory modalities, collectively narrowing the perceptual gap between digital and physical worlds. We present findings from a growing, multidisciplinary body of evidence examining how these evolving sensory affordances shape individuals' perceptions, judgments, and behaviors. We conclude by offering a selection of future research directions with particular attention to those whose i

Vibrohaptic Design for Simulating High-Five Interactions at Virtual Talent Fan Meetings.

As the market for virtual talents (e.g., VTubers) continues to expand, fan meetings have emerged as crucial events for strengthening the connection between talents and their fans. However, the limited interaction time per fan presents a challenge, making it difficult to create a highly satisfying experience through conversation alone. To enhance engagement, non-verbal interactions such as high-fives are considered effective in creating emotional impact and improving fan satisfaction. This paper presents a systematic evaluation of vibrohaptic feedback strategies for simulating a high-five inter

Decoding Cross-Modal Haptic Neural Coupling Through EEG-LSTM Spatiotemporal Modeling for Vibration-Roughness Interaction.

Haptic feedback is crucial for enhancing virtual immersion, but a neural coding mechanism that correlates the vibration frequency with surface roughness in haptic substitution remains unknown, which hinders the development of tribologically driven haptic interfaces. To address this limitation, this study models cross-modal neural coupling between mechanical vibrations and roughness systematically through double-blind experiments, event-related potential analysis, and electroencephalography (EEG) space-time modeling based on the long short-term memory (LSTM) method. By dynamically extracting th

A Flexible Vibrotactile Interface for Immersive Metaverse Interaction.

Flexible piezoelectric polymers, particularly poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), are highly promising for soft haptic actuators; however, their practical integration into wearable interfaces is severely limited by low output displacement and weak vibrational force due to significant mechanical damping from the encapsulation matrices. Herein, we report an innovative soft piezoelectric vibrotactile interface designed specifically for immersive experiences within metaverse. This interface features a unique internal chamber structure that significantly enhances vibrational displacement and vibratio

Sensorless Force Sensing for Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Robotic minimally invasive surgery (R-MIS) has achieved success in various procedures; however, the lack of haptic feedback is considered by some to be a limiting factor. The typical method to acquire tool-tissue reaction forces is attaching force sensors on surgical tools, but this complicates sterilization and makes the tool bulky. This paper explores the feasibility of using motor current to estimate tool-tissue forces and demonstrates acceptable results in terms of time delay and accuracy. This sensorless force estimation method sheds new light on the possibility of equipping existing robo

VibGrasp: Spatiotemporal Vibration Based Multimodal Haptic Rendering With a Lightweight Exo-Glove for 3D Shape Perception.

Haptic feedback has been employed to enhance shape perception during grasp interactions, improving immersion and task performance in extended reality (XR). Although wearable devices offer precise multi-phalangeal haptic feedback, their bulkiness and complexity often hinder practicality. In addition, fingertip-based tactile feedback often limits users' ability to perceive a continuous and sequential sensation across the finger surfaces during power grasp. We present VibGrasp, a haptic shape-rendering method and a supporting haptic glove that synchronizes spatiotemporal vibrotactile feedback acr

Multimodal Feedback for Handheld Tool Guidance: Combining Wrist-Based Haptics with Augmented Reality.

We investigate how vibrotactile wrist feedback can enhance spatial guidance for handheld tool movement in optical see-through augmented reality (AR). While AR overlays are widely used to support surgical tasks, visual occlusion, lighting conditions, and interface ambiguity can compromise precision and confidence. To address these challenges, we designed a multimodal system combining AR visuals with a custom wrist-worn haptic device delivering directional and state-based cues. A formative study with experienced surgeons and residents identified key tool maneuvers and preferences for reference m

Robot-mediated haptic feedback outperforms vision in violin duo coordination.

Joint actions among humans rely on the integration of multiple sensory modalities, most notably auditory and visual cues, which support explicit communication between partners. However, haptic feedback provides a direct, implicit channel for sensorimotor communication, and its contribution to fine motor coordination in joint actions remains largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that haptic communication, rendered through bidirectionally coupled wearable robots, outperforms traditional auditory-visual feedback in a complex and challenging real-life joint action: ensemble violin performance.
