The vision of haptics tunes the somatosensory threshold.

The interaction between different sensory modalities represents a crucial issue in the neuroscience of consciousness: when the processing of one modality is deficient, the concomitant presentation of stimuli of other spared modalities may sustain the restoration of the damaged sensory functions. In this regard, visual enhancement of touch may represent a viable tool in rehabilitating tactile disorders, yet the specific visual features mostly modulating the somatosensory experience remain unsettled. In this study, healthy subjects underwent a tactile detection task during the observation of vid

Altered visual and haptic verticality perception in posterior cortical atrophy and Alzheimer's disease.

There is increasing theoretical and empirical support for the brain combining multisensory information to determine the direction of gravity and hence uprightness. A fundamental part of the process is the spatial transformation of sensory signals between reference frames: eye-centred, head-centred, body-centred, etc. The question 'Am I the right way up?' posed by a patient with posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) suggests disturbances in upright perception, subsequently investigated in PCA and typical Alzheimer's disease (tAD) based on what looks or feels upright. Participants repeatedly aligned

VibGrasp: Spatiotemporal Vibration Based Multimodal Haptic Rendering With a Lightweight Exo-Glove for 3D Shape Perception.

Haptic feedback has been employed to enhance shape perception during grasp interactions, improving immersion and task performance in extended reality (XR). Although wearable devices offer precise multi-phalangeal haptic feedback, their bulkiness and complexity often hinder practicality. In addition, fingertip-based tactile feedback often limits users' ability to perceive a continuous and sequential sensation across the finger surfaces during power grasp. We present VibGrasp, a haptic shape-rendering method and a supporting haptic glove that synchronizes spatiotemporal vibrotactile feedback acr

Haptic feedback in violin education as a case study of robotic exoskeleton-mediated motor learning.

This study explores the use of an upper-limb wearable exoskeleton for teaching violin technique to novices through haptic-assisted training. The educational potential of this technology was evaluated using a framework that integrated quantitative kinematic metrics and qualitative assessments, comparing a group receiving haptic feedback (N = 12) with a control group that did not (N = 12) in a mixed between-within-subjects design. Results from a double-blind expert panel indicated that participants trained with the exoskeleton outperformed the control group during recall measurements. In additio

[Interactive Virtual Simulation with Haptics for Neurosurgery].

We established a unique pre-surgical simulation method by applying interactive virtual simulation(IVS)using multi-fusion three-dimensional imaging data, presenting high-quality visualization of microsurgical anatomies. Our IVS provided a realistic environment for imitating surgical manipulations, such as dissecting bones, retracting brain tissues, and removing tumors, with tactile and kinesthetic sensations delivered through a specific haptic device. The great advantage of our IVS was in deciding the most appropriate craniotomy and bone resection to create the optimal surgical window and obtai

Guiding Breathing at the Resonance Frequency with Haptic Sensors Potentiates Cardiac Coherence.

Cardiac coherence is a state achieved when one controls their breathing rate during the so-called resonance frequency breathing. This maneuver allows respiratory-driven vagal modulations of the heart rate to superimpose with sympathetic modulations occurring at 0.1 Hz, thereby maximizing autonomous power in heart-to-brain connections. These stimulations have been shown to improve vagal regulations, which results in obvious benefits for both mental and organic health. Here, we present a device that is able to deliver visual and haptic cues, as well as HRV biofeedback information to guide the us

Modified Yamane technique with a 26-gauge needle: single corneal incision and simplified haptic insertion.

A modified Yamane technique with a 26-gauge needle for aphakia correction is described. Single corneal or corneoscleral incision is set at 12 o'clock. The 26-gauge needles are used to make 2 angled incisions parallel to the limbus to fix the haptics of a 3-piece intraocular lens. The modifications provide an easier and safer way of haptic insertion into the needle tip and decreases the possibility of bending or breaking the haptic.

Robot-mediated haptic feedback outperforms vision in violin duo coordination.

Joint actions among humans rely on the integration of multiple sensory modalities, most notably auditory and visual cues, which support explicit communication between partners. However, haptic feedback provides a direct, implicit channel for sensorimotor communication, and its contribution to fine motor coordination in joint actions remains largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that haptic communication, rendered through bidirectionally coupled wearable robots, outperforms traditional auditory-visual feedback in a complex and challenging real-life joint action: ensemble violin performance.

ThermalTexture: Temperature-Integrated Surface Rendering Using Thermal Referral Induced by Texture Slip-Feedback.

Thermal-vibration feedback has been reported to elicit the thermal referral phenomenon, offering new possibilities for enhancing user experience. Yet, little research has explored whether thermal referral occurs in the presence of texture-slip feedback. To address this, we developed a custom haptic device capable of delivering integrated thermal and slip feedback to the middle and distal phalanges of an index finger. We primarily estimated the thermal referral occurrence under passive and active touch conditions across two different perceptual experiments, while each further examined its impac

Recognizing emotions induced by wearable haptic vibration using noninvasive electroencephalogram.

The integration of haptic technology into affective computing has led to a new field known as affective haptics. Nonetheless, the mechanism underlying the interaction between haptics and emotions remains unclear. In this paper, we proposed a novel haptic pattern with adaptive vibration intensity and rhythm according to the volume, and applied it into the emotional experiment paradigm. To verify its superiority, the proposed haptic pattern was compared with an existing haptic pattern by combining them with conventional visual-auditory stimuli to induce emotions (joy, sadness, fear, and neutral)

Feedback Type May Change the EMG Pattern and Kinematics During Robot Supported Upper Limb Reaching Task.

Haptic interfaces and virtual reality (VR) technology have been increasingly introduced in rehabilitation, facilitating the provision of various feedback and task conditions. However, correspondence between the feedback/task conditions and movement strategy during reaching tasks remains a question. To investigate movement strategy, we assessed velocity parameters and peak latency of electromyography. Ten neuromuscularly intact volunteers participated in the measurement using haptic interface and VR. Concurrent visual feedback and various terminal feedback (e.g., visual, haptic, visual and hapt

Lightweight Wearable Fingertip Haptic Device With 3-DOF Directional Force Feedback Based on Fingernail Stimulation.

Wearable haptic devices face a trade-off between providing rich feedback and preserving natural fingertip sensation. Current multi-DOF systems encumber the fingerpad, interfering with fingerpad sensory capabilities, while lightweight devices offer limited 1-DOF feedback. To address this, we present a 5.24 g, three-degree-of-freedom (3-DOF) haptic device that stimulates mechanoreceptors around the fingernail, leaving the fingerpad unobstructed. It uses two string-pulling motors for distal-proximal feedback and an arc-shaped pin motor for radial-ulnar stimulation to generate directional force ve

Wearable High-Resolution Haptic Display Using Suction Stimuli to Represent Cutaneous Contact Information on Finger Pad.

A high-resolution haptic display that reproduces tactile distribution information on the contact surface between a finger and an object realizes the presentation of the softness of the object and the magnitude and direction of the applied force. In this article, we developed a 32-channel suction haptic display that can reproduce tactile distribution on fingertips with high resolution. The device is wearable, compact, and lightweight, thanks to the absence of actuators on the finger. A FE analysis of the skin deformation confirmed that the suction stimulus interfered less with adjacent stimuli

A novel Yamane technique modification: Reverse intraocular lens implantation for simplifying trailing haptic insertion.

We described a modified Yamane technique for simplifying trailing haptic insertion in aphakia correction. In Yamane intrascleral intraocular lens (IOL) implantation technique, trailing haptic implantation is challenging for many surgeons. This modification provides an easier and safer way of trailing haptic insertion into the needle tip and decreases the possibility of bending or breaking the trailing haptic.

Towards functional robotic training: motor learning of dynamic tasks is enhanced by haptic rendering but hampered by arm weight support.

BACKGROUND: Current robot-aided training allows for high-intensity training but might hamper the transfer of learned skills to real daily tasks. Many of these tasks, e.g., carrying a cup of coffee, require manipulating objects with complex dynamics. Thus, the absence of somatosensory information regarding the interaction with virtual objects during robot-aided training might be limiting the potential benefits of robotic training on motor (re)learning. We hypothesize that providing somatosensory information through the haptic rendering of virtual environments might enhance motor learning and sk

Contact, agency, and haptic experience in sport: a conceptual analysis of embodied skill, interpersonal touch, and digital mediation.

Sport is often analyzed through visual, physiological, or cognitive models, yet athletes also act through pressure, flow, friction, rebound, thermal change, bodily guidance, proximity, and vibration. These phenomena are usually examined separately in research on perceptual skill, coaching and safeguarding, disability access, and haptic technology. This conceptual analysis develops the Contact-Agency Framework to compare how body-environment, body-other, and body-technology contact reorganize opportunities to perceive, interpret, calibrate, regulate, contest, and delegate action-relevant judgme

Diabetes Technology Accessibility in Deaf and Hard of Hearing People With Diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) populations face higher rates of diabetes and systemic barriers accessing diabetes technology. Effective use of diabetes technology relies on sensory (e.g., visual and audible) input and interpretation by the user. This study evaluates the accessibility of continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGMs) and insulin pumps for DHH individuals. METHODS: A 2-h focus group was conducted to comprehensively evaluate the accessibility of two CGM and six insulin pumps in a sample of DHH individuals during an interactive, hands-on session. Participants used an in

It Sounds Cool: Exploring Sonification of Mid-Air Haptic Textures Exploration on Texture Judgments, Body Perception, and Motor Behaviour.

Ultrasonic mid-air haptic technology allows for the perceptual rendering of textured surfaces onto the user's hand. Unlike real textured surfaces, however, mid-air haptic feedback lacks implicit multisensory cues needed to reliably infer a texture's attributes (e.g., its roughness). In this article, we combined mid-air haptic textures with congruent sound feedback to investigate how sonification could influence people's 1) explicit judgment of the texture attributes, 2) explicit sensations of their own hand, and 3) implicit motor behavior during haptic exploration. Our results showed that audi
