[Endoscopy-Assisted Suturectomy and Cranial Remodeling Orthosis for Craniosynostosis].

Craniosynostosis(CS)is now being diagnosed early as Japanese parents have become more conscious of the infants' skull shape. Endoscopy-assisted suturectomy(EAS)is a surgical treatment for early infants in combination with postoperative helmet cranial remodeling. Here we report our operative experiences with EAS for the treatment of CS. EAS is minimally invasive and has yielded good results when performed in combination with helmet therapy. However, transfusion for almost half of patients and additional surgery for syndromic patients were required. We will further develop the bone resection tec

Football Shoulder Pad Design and Its Effect on Head Kinematics in Shoulder-to-Helmet Impacts.

Shoulder-to-helmet (STH) impacts have been shown to cause approximately twenty percent of concussions in football yet little research has investigated shoulder pad design and STH impacts. This study aimed to characterize STH impacts and identify the effect of shoulder pad design on the struck head kinematics. Additional padding was added to a shoulder pad, and was then compared to an unmodified control shoulder pad. Participants performed a series of tests where they struck a helmeted Hybrid III dummy with both shoulder pad variations to compare struck head linear and rotational kinematics. Th

Puck impact response of ice hockey face masks.

A sample of new ice hockey face masks was struck over the nose or eye of a headform by pucks shot at velocities of 11-39 m/s (25-87 m.p.h.). Deformation of the masks was studied from high speed film. Acceleration pulses transmitted to the center of gravity of the headform were recorded. Peak accelerations never exceeded 86 G's and were well below reported concussion thresholds (200 G's). The film showed contact of the mask or puck with the face at puck velocities of 28 m/s (60 m.p.h.) and above. These results indicate a somewhat lower "safe" puck impact velocity (28 m/s) than that stated by th

Under the Helmet: Perioperative Concussion-Review of Current Literature and Targets for Research.

Patients with recent concussion experience disruption in neurocellular and neurometabolic function that may persist beyond symptom resolution. Patients may require anesthesia to facilitate diagnostic or surgical procedures following concussion; these procedures may or may not be related to the injury that caused the patient to sustain a concussion. As our knowledge about concussion continues to advance, it is imperative that anesthesiologists remain up to date with current principles. This Focused Review will update readers on the latest concussion literature, discuss the potential impact of c

Free-Floating Bikeshare and Helmet Use in Seattle, WA.

Wearing a helmet when bicycling prevents traumatic brain injury in the event of a crash. Most cyclists nationwide use helmets when riding. However, the growth of free-floating bike sharing systems, which offer short-term access to bicycles but not helmets, may erode helmet-wearing norms among cyclists. We counted cyclists over several hours at four locations in Seattle, WA. We categorized each rider according to whether he or she was wearing a helmet and to whether or not he or she was riding a bike share bike. Whereas 91% of riders of private bikes wore helmets, only 20% of bike share riders

Research on attention mechanism and loss function based on YOLOv5 to improve the detection method of underground personnel wearing safety helmets.

Detecting whether underground workers are wearing safety helmets has long been an essential yet challenging task in industrial safety monitoring. Due to dim lighting, occlusion, and complex backgrounds in mining environments, existing object detection models often fail to achieve satisfactory performance. To address these issues, this study proposes an improved helmet detection approach based on YOLOv5. The Squeeze-and-Excitation Network (SENet) is enhanced with a multi-scale average pooling mechanism and the smoother Swish activation function, forming a lightweight attention module named SENe

A YOLOv8 algorithm for safety helmet wearing detection in complex environment.

Helmets are the most common protective equipment on construction sites and can effectively reduce head injuries caused by falling objects. In actual helmet detection on construction sites, traditional target detection faces challenges such as complex environments and unclear target identification. To address this issue, we developed the URD-YOLOv8 helmet detection algorithm. The algorithm is based on an improvement of YOLOv8 and aims to enhance the performance of helmet detection. First, the upsampling module is integrated into the neck network of the model, which makes the model upsampling ab

Head first - Review of epilepsy head injury risk and protection.

INTRODUCTION: The causes of falls and resultant head injuries in people with epilepsy are complex and represent important clinical issues significantly impacting on safety, quality of life and long-term prognosis. A general solution for many years has been to provide helmets for head protection. There is poor understanding of the influencing risk factors and solutions to give person-centred clinical advice. METHODS: A focused narrative review was conducted to investigate the risk factors for seizure-related head injuries and evidence of current helmets to offer protection. Four databases were

Helmets for preventing head and facial injuries in bicyclists.

BACKGROUND: Each year, in the United states, approximately 900 persons die from injuries due to bicycle crashes and over 500,000 persons are treated in emergency departments. Head injury is by far the greatest risk posed to bicyclists, comprising one-third of emergency department visits, two-thirds of hospital admissions, and three-fourths of deaths. Facial injuries to cyclists occur at a rate nearly identical to that of head injuries. Although it makes inherent sense that helmets would be protective against head injury, establishing the real-world effectiveness of helmets is important. A numb

"Gearing up" for summer. Quick tips and biking essentials.

With any luck, at about the time this appears in print I'll be appearing on the street in my favorite part of my fitness program: bicycling. I don't claim to be an expert--my family thinks I'm Miguel Indurain because I can ride 20 miles at a time, and I think I'm Marco Pantani because I'm short, bald, and good on hills--but I've learned a fair amount in my last three years of riding. If you're an experienced rider you probably know at least as much as I do, but if you're a beginner--or beginning over after a long hiatus, as I did--then I have some suggestions for you.

The protective performance of bicyclists' helmets in accidents.

A study of the injuries sustained by 1,892 bicycle riders during accidents indicated that 432 of the bicyclists had been wearing a helmet and 64 of the latter group had sustained an impact to the helmet. The 64 helmets were evaluated in this project to relate the nature and severity of the impact they had sustained to the head injury experienced by the wearer. The protective performance of the helmet shells, impact absorbing liners, and retention systems were evaluated, and the severity of the impacts sustained by the helmets was simulated in the test laboratory. The simulation was performed b

Exploring the comfort of head personal protective equipment for Chinese firefighters: an interview study.

Head personal protective equipment (HPPE), such as helmets and masks, is protective equipment worn by firefighters to protect their head, neck and face when they are performing tasks. As a wearable device, HPPE significantly affects firefighters' occupational safety and health along with job performance. This study aims to explore the influential factors of HPPE comfort and collect corresponding functional requirements. A semi-structured interview was conducted among five focus groups comprising 31 Chinese firefighters. Through a qualitative analysis of the interview results, eight dimensions

Common cycling injuries. Management and prevention.

The increasing participation in the athletic forms of bicycling warrants expanded physician attention to the traumatic and overuse injuries experienced by cyclists. The modern bicycle consists of a frame with various components, including handlebars, brakes, wheels, pedals, and gears, in various configurations for the various modes of cycling. For high performance cycling the proper fit of the bicycle is critical. The most efficient method to provide an accurate fit is the Fitkit, but proper frame selection and adjustment can be made by following simple guidelines for frame size, seat height,

Design of motorcycle rider protection systems using numerical techniques.

The goal of this paper is the development of a design methodology, based on the use of finite elements numerical tools and dummies in order to study the damages and injuries that appear during a motorcyclist collision against a motorcyclist protection system (MPS). According to the existing regulation, a Hybrid III dummy FEM model has been used as a starting point and some modifications have been included. For instance a new finite element helmet model has been developed and later added to the dummy model. Moreover, some structural elements affecting the simulation results such as the connecti

Ocular findings in asymptomatic amateur boxers.

A group of 25 active, asymptomatic, amateur boxers were examined to evaluate the nature and incidence of ocular pathologic conditions in amateur boxing. An approximately age-matched group of 25 men who were not boxers was used as a control group. The number of fights varied from 1 to 220 (mean 39.4), and the number of spar rounds from 20 to 600 (mean 192.5). Visual acuity was 20/20 in all subjects of both groups, except for one boxer with keratoconus. Intraocular pressure was below 20 mmHg in all eyes. In 19 (76%) boxers, pathologic anatomic findings were attributed to contusion trauma. Lesion
