Academic psychiatry : the journal of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training and the Association for Academic Psychiatry2014eng
There is a substantial unmet need for mental health and substance abuse services in the USA. In 2009, the Institute of Medicine recommended increased early identification and intervention for young people with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. With the expansion of integrated models in primary care settings, we now have the chance to improve outcomes for young people with mental health conditions, just as we have by improving the early identification and treatment of other preventable and/or treatable conditions such as obesity, asthma, or HIV. This is a moment of great opportunity

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) represent the leading cause of death and disability worldwide, and those NCDs contributing most burden - cardiometabolic illness, diabetes, cancer, chronic respiratory disease - can be largely prevented through improvements in health behaviours such as tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, exposure to environmental hazards, unhealthy dietary habits, and physical inactivity. Despite concerted efforts at all levels of health care provision and policy, population-level health behaviour change still presents an ongoing challenge to primary care clinicians, public he

Purpose: Growing evidence associates low oral health literacy (OHL) with poor oral health outcomes. While nearly half of United States adults have periodontal disease (PD), there are conflicting results on association between OHL and PD. The purpose of this pilot study was to explore the association between functional OHL and periodontal health as defined by the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) classification system. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a convenience sample of dental patients presenting for care at a Midwestern Federally Qualified Health Center. OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the health status of those who are newly homeless. We sought to describe the health status and health care use of new clients of homeless shelters and observe changes in these health indicators over the study period.
METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal study of 445 individuals from their entry into the homeless shelter system through the subsequent 18 months.
RESULTS: Disease was prevalent in the newly homeless. This population accessed health care services at high rates in the year before becoming homeless. Significant improvements in health status were se

BACKGROUND: Probability and nonprobability-based studies of US transgender persons identify different disparities in health and health care access.
OBJECTIVES: We used TransPop, the first US national probability survey of transgender persons, to describe and compare measures of health and health access among transgender, nonbinary, and cisgender participants. We directly compared the results with 2015 US Transgender Survey (USTS) data and with previously published analyses from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS).
METHODS: All participants were screened by Gallup Inc., whi

Four decades ago 204 men were selected as adolescents for an interdisciplinary study of health; since then they have been followed biennially. Of the 185 men who remained in the study and in good health until 1964 (age, 42 +/- 1 years), 100 men remained in excellent physical health over the next 11 years, 54 acquired minor problems, and 31 acquired serious chronic illness or died. Of 59 men with the best mental health, assessed from the age of 21 to 46 years, only two became chronically ill or died by the age of 53. Of the 48 men with the worst mental health from the age of 21 to 46, 18 became

IMPORTANCE: Social determinants of health (SDOH) influence child health. However, most previous studies have used individual, small-set, or cherry-picked SDOH variables without examining unbiased computed SDOH patterns from high-dimensional SDOH factors to investigate associations with child mental health, cognition, and physical health.
OBJECTIVE: To identify SDOH patterns and estimate their associations with children's mental, cognitive, and physical developmental outcomes.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study included children aged 9 to 10 years at baselin

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To examine nursing students' health habits. More specifically, the objectives were to determine whether there were any changes in their health habits during their course of study, and to understand whether the students' perceptions about good health conditions cohered with their health-related behaviour.
BACKGROUND: The transition from high school to university has an undesirable effect on students' health habits, and nursing students' unhealthy behaviours may prevent them from helping patients improve their poor health habits.
DESIGN: A longitudinal design was used. The

OBJECTIVE: State public health departments use federal funding to examine and address social determinants of health (SDOH) within their communities to improve health and advance health equity. Yet, most federal funding is categorical (ie, funding used for a specific program or narrow purpose), which can create barriers to addressing social and structural drivers of inequity. The Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant (PHHS Block Grant) is a flexible funding mechanism that provides health departments the latitude to identify and fund initiatives that address local public health needs

OBJECTIVE: To quantify and describe disability inclusion in community health assessments (CHAs) and community health improvement plans (CHIPs) at the local health department (LHD) level.
METHODS: This study uses a cross-sectional design of the 2019 NACCHO Profile and Public Health Accreditation Board-accredited LHD CHAs and CHIPs to quantify and describe disability inclusion.
RESULTS: Less than 25% of LHDs included a CHIP goal, objective, or activity that specifically includes people with disabilities. Having a disability partner as part of CHA and CHIP steering committees was associated wit

OBJECTIVES: Environmental intolerance (EI) can negatively impact well-being and daily life, and even lead to disability. Healthcare can detect EI early and conduct interventions. This study explored ways of identifying environmental exposure-related health worries and EI during occupational health (OH) check-ups, and their associations with unselected working-age employees' perceived work ability, stress and overall health.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A crosssectional survey was conducted among 355 employees attending OH check-ups at an occupational health services (OHS) unit in Southern Ostrobothn

Florida was the fastest growing state in the United States in 2024, and it has the third highest state population in 2026. We reviewed health challenges related to rapid population growth, insurance coverage gaps, underinvestment in public health, policy trends, and the high proportion of older adults to assess Florida's health and healthcare system in comparison with national benchmarks. We conducted a comparative analysis using data from the US Census Bureau, the FLHealth Community Health Assessment Resource Tool Set, America's Health Rankings, and the peer-reviewed literature. Key indicator

Healthcare leaders addressing homelessness and mental illness in Canada may find mental health laws challenging. This paper explores the limitations of the existing system, including insufficient hospital services, community resources and long-term housing solutions. It critiques proposals for forced treatment and confinement, arguing that they are costly, legally contentious and ineffective in providing sustainable care. Instead, it advocates for increased investment in community-based mental health services, stable housing and income support and coordinated care between hospitals and communi

The prevalence of obesity is rapidly increasing worldwide. Obesity should not be understood only as the accumulation of fat in the body, but instead as a phenomenon that exerts different effects on our health according to the place of fat deposition and its stability. Obesity is the starting point of most metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, sleep apnea, and eventually cardiovascular disease. There are different kinds of obesity, ranging from simple obesity to sarcopenic obesity. The main purpose of intervening to address obesity is to decrease the ultimate c

Psychobiological research is a systems approach that aims to integrate the biological, psychological and social systems that may influence health or pathology, particularly in chronic diseases and physical and/or psychiatric disorders. In this approach, we can expect to be able to deduce a 'biological signature' associated with particular symptom clusters. Similarly, psychosocial factors such as life events, health attitudes and behaviours, social support, psychological well-being, spirituality and personality are to be considered in terms of their influence on individual vulnerability to dise

PURPOSE: Although school health centers (SHCs) may improve access to reproductive health care services and contraception, published data on SHC service use and reproductive health impact are limited.
METHODS: Reproductive health indicators among students at four urban high schools in a single building with an SHC in 2009 were compared with students in a school without an SHC, using a quasi-experimental research design (N = 2,076 students, 1,365 from SHC and 711 from comparison school). The SHC provided comprehensive reproductive health education and services, including on-site provision of ho

Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are currently the main cause of premature death and disability in the world. Most of these NCDs are due to unhealthy lifestyle choices i.e. tobacco, unhealthy diet, lack of physical exercise and alcohol consumption. Studies have shown that health policy interventions aiming at improving diet and physical activity and reducing tobacco consumption are inexpensive, effective and cost saving. In this paper we address the political health policy interventions that have been shown to improve public health. We discuss some of the theories of behavioral economi
