Behavioral Health Problems Presented to Integrated Pediatric Behavioral Health Clinics: Differences in Urban and Rural Patients.

Behavioral health diagnoses and service use may differ based on rurality. The purpose of this study was to examine the patterns of mental disorder diagnoses of urban, rural, and remote pediatric populations. This retrospective study used electronic medical records from integrated behavioral health clinics in Nebraska from 2012 to 2013. Bivariate and multivariable models were used to examine the differences in diagnoses. Adolescents with attention deficit and related disorders were more likely to be male, younger, have public insurance and rural/remote residents. Adjustment disorders were assoc

Role of grandparents in risky health behavior transmission: A study on smoking behavior in Norway.

Exploring the role of grandparents in the intergenerational transmission of risky health behaviors, specifically smoking, this study aims to examine the differential influence of maternal and paternal grandparents on their grandchildren's smoking behavior in adulthood. Utilizing the Tromsø Study's unique three-generational dataset from Tromsø, Norway, we employ a control function approach. The findings show a matrilateral bias, revealing that maternal grandparents' smoking behavior has a notable negative direct effect on the probability of their grandchildren's smoking. No such influence is ob

Behavior Change Techniques in Digital Health Interventions for Promoting Adolescent Health Behaviors: Systematic Umbrella Review.

BACKGROUND: Digital health interventions (DHIs) using behavior change techniques (BCTs) show promise in addressing adolescent health behaviors, but evidence of their effectiveness across health behavior domains remains fragmented and poorly summarized. OBJECTIVE: This systematic umbrella review synthesized evidence from existing systematic reviews on the effectiveness of BCTs within DHI targeting key adolescent health behavior domains: alcohol consumption, tobacco use, physical activity, dietary habits, and obesity management. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, PsycInfo, Embase, and

Influencing factors and mechanisms promoting proactive health behavior intention: an integration of the health belief model and the theory of planned behavior.

BACKGROUND: Promoting proactive health behaviors is an effective strategy for addressing public health challenges and advancing the "Healthy China" initiative. This study aims to explore the driving factors and mechanisms influencing proactive health behavior intention by integrating the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and the health belief model (HBM). METHODS: A cross-sectional survey design was employed. A structured questionnaire was developed based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and the health belief model (HBM), covering eight dimensions: health behavior attitude, subjective n

Aligning Health Promotion Principles With Health Behavior Practice: Experiences With Qualitative Tuberculosis Research.

Although health promotion scholars encourage researchers in the field to adopt a broad definition of health and a wide lens on the factors which shape it, critics have noted that health promotion research continues to be focused downstream on individual health behavior, downplaying the powerful role of structural determinants. We argue that increased use of qualitative approaches in health promotion could support the shift away from clinically defined disease and towards health promotion practices which advance community well-being and empowerment. We focus on three overlapping tensions, namel

COVID-19: Growing Health Disparity Gaps and an Opportunity for Health Behavior Discovery?

Recently, racial and ethnic disparities within the current coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic at the state level have received attention and notably highlight the ongoing issues surrounding health disparities within the United States. Among the discussions around health disparities lies a discussion on the role of psychosocial stress during this pandemic, especially with broadly applied social distancing and isolation recommendations. In nonpandemic times, psychosocial stressors have a significant association with physiological responses and behavioral responses. Within the current p

Health care provider advice for African American adults not meeting health behavior recommendations.

INTRODUCTION: Poor dietary habits and sedentary lifestyle contribute to excessive morbidity and mortality. Healthy People 2010 goals are for 85% of physicians to counsel their patients about physical activity and for 75% of physician office visits made by patients with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or dyslipidemia to include dietary counseling. The purpose of this study was to 1) determine the rate of participant-reported health care provider advice for healthy lifestyle changes among African Americans who do not meet recommendations for physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption,

The Changing Health Policy Environment and Behavioral Health Services Delivery.

Deinstitutionalization has left an inadequate supply of inpatient psychiatric beds. Simultaneous cuts to public funding and insurance coverage for outpatient mental health treatment have increased the frequency of acute psychiatric crises. The resulting lack of available options has shifted the burden of treatment to emergency departments and the criminal justice system. Recent legislation has improved insurance access, but rules are not always enforced and there are still few options for care. Discussion of mental health care delivery must acknowledge that many emergent behavioral health cris

Health-risk behaviors and health concerns among young adolescents.

This study examined the health concerns and behaviors of 563 adolescents (aged 11 through 14) from a variety of social, racial, and ethnic backgrounds. Behaviors associated with adolescent morbidity and mortality were examined, including sexual behavior, substance use, and injury-related behaviors. Although young adolescents are often viewed as unlikely participants in these risk behaviors, the results of this study suggest that greater attention should be paid to this younger group and their health-risk behaviors. A majority of the sample had tried alcohol and tobacco, and almost a third had

Health beliefs and behaviors of Saudi women.

This paper describes perceptions of familiarity with symptoms and beliefs about illnesses based on interviews with 50 Saudi women. The sample was young, with 82% under the age of 40, and not well educated by Western standards, with one-third being illiterate and 80% having no more than a primary school education. More than half lived in households of six or more. Although there was greater awareness of germs as causative factors in illness than previous studies in Saudi Arabia had demonstrated, beliefs in multiple causes, including religious beliefs about disease causation, persisted. There wa

Alcohol consumption: from biochemistry to behavior, health, and beyond.

Alcohol metabolism is a multi-step biochemical process driven primarily by hepatic oxidation of ethanol to acetaldehyde and then to acetate. Although this pathway protects the body from prolonged ethanol exposure, transient acetaldehyde accumulation generates substantial toxicity, and chronic alcohol intake activates auxiliary pathways that amplify oxidative stress, inflammation, and tissue injury. Both metabolic capacity and physiological response to alcohol vary widely between individuals, reflecting genetic and epigenetic variation in the alcohol- and aldehyde-dehydrogenase enzymes, the cyt

A neurobiological taxonomy of sedentary behavior for brain health.

Growing evidence documents that the influence of sedentary behaviors on brain health is not universally beneficial or detrimental but rather context-dependent and nuanced. More specifically, recent findings suggest that mentally active sedentary behavior, such as video gaming, may benefit brain health, whereas mentally passive sedentary behavior, such as television viewing, may not convey such benefits. However, traditional classification approaches do not fully recognize the importance of content relevance. In this opinion article, we propose a neurobiological, dual-axis framework combining m
