Oral health care for children attending a malnutrition clinic in South Africa.

UNLABELLED: Most health problems dealt with at a primary care level have an oral health impact, making it vital for oral health services to find means to integrate with other facility-based programmes at primary health care (PHC) centres. AIM: 1) To determine the oral status of the children attending a facility-based nutrition programme and the oral health knowledge, attitude and practices of their parents/caregivers; and 2) To develop a framework for an oral health component to complement this programme. METHOD: A descriptive study of children and their parents/caregivers attending a facili

Smoking behaviour, tobacco sales and tobacco advertising at 40 'Smoke Free Hospitals' in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable death globally. Vietnam's 2012 Law on Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms establishes all healthcare facilities as smoke-free environments. We aimed to evaluate the implementation of these policies within health facilities across Vietnam. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was undertaken at 40 central, provincial, district and commune healthcare facilities in four provinces of Vietnam. The presence of tobacco sales, smoke-free signage, evidence of recent tobacco use and smoking behaviours by patients and staff were observed over a

VOC exposures in California early childhood education environments.

Little information exists about exposures to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in early childhood education (ECE) environments. We measured 38 VOCs in single-day air samples collected in 2010-2011 from 34 ECE facilities serving California children and evaluated potential health risks. We also examined unknown peaks in the GC/MS chromatographs for indoor samples and identified 119 of these compounds using mass spectral libraries. VOCs found in cleaning and personal care products had the highest indoor concentrations (d-limonene and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane [D5] medians: 33.1 and 51.4 μg/m³,

Evaluating Environmental Ward Performance: Insights From Acoustic, Lighting, and Temperature Monitoring in a Palliative Care Unit.

The physical environment of inpatient wards plays a critical role in supporting rest and care delivery. In palliative care, environmental conditions such as sound, lighting, and temperature directly influence patient comfort, circadian rhythms, and staff performance. However, few studies have quantitatively assessed these factors in functioning palliative care units (PCUs).ObjectivesTo evaluate the spatial and environmental performance of an acute PCU through sensor-based monitoring of acoustic exposure, light levels, and temperature.MethodA postoccupancy evaluation approach was employed to as

Keeping Your Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Clean: The Hospital Environment as a Potential Source of Health Care-Associated Infections.

The patient's environment is an important (and often overlooked) source of pathogen exposure for patients in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) setting. Environmental surfaces in the NICU, including those frequently touched during the course of patient care, may be contaminated with potential pathogens. In this review, we highlight environmental reservoirs that lead to health care-associated infection risks in the NICU environment and provide examples from medical literature. Finally, we provide a few suggested interventions to mitigate these environmental risks in your NICU.

A comprehensive approach to LASIK.

Candidates for LASIK procedures should have a stable refraction for at least 12 months. The three main contraindications for LASIK include patients with keratoconus or autoimmune disease and active corneal or ocular disease. The proper laser room environment is critical for optimal laser performance. The temperature should be maintained between 18 degrees C and 24 degrees C, and the humidity should be kept below 50%.

Rapid Review of the Health Care Built Environment Support for Hospice/End-of-Life Patients, Families, and Interdisciplinary Care Teams.

The health care built environment directly impacts health outcomes and the care experience of the patient and family members. Elements of the built environment include the architectural design, spatial organization, and physical features of clinical spaces that shape workflow, communication, and safety. The physical care setting becomes especially significant in hospice, where the primary wishes of the patient shift from curative care to comfort and support. This rapid review explores the role of the health care built environment in shaping hospice care delivery and supporting patients, famili

Assessment of the Bacteriological Profile and Antibiotic Susceptibility Patterns of Wastewater in Health Facilities of Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobials used for the treatment and prevention of bacterial infections are mainly released nonmetabolized into the aquatic environment via wastewater. Sometimes, unused therapeutic drugs are released down the drains that could act as selective pressure for the development of resistance. The aim of this study was to assess the bacteriological profile of wastewater in health facilities and determine antibiotic susceptibility patterns of bacterial isolates. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from October 1 to December 26, 2020, in health facility wastewater. A total

A descriptive study of treatment provision for problem alcohol drinking in adult males in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Poor, Black African males are underrepresented as patients in facilities that treat problem drinking in Cape Town, South Africa. Reasons for this remain unclear, but factors such as the kinds of treatment provided, perceptions of treatment efficacy, social stigma and traditional treatment beliefs have been suggested as possible barriers to treatment seeking. This descriptive study examined the availability and nature of problem drinking treatment facilities in Khayelitsha, a largely poor township of Black, Xhosa-speaking Africans, on the outskirts of Cape Town. METHODS: Seven trea

Exploring women's childbirth experiences and perceptions of delivery care in peri-urban settings in Nairobi, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Kenya continues to have a high maternal mortality rate that is showing slow progress in improving. Peri-urban settings in Kenya have been reported to exhibit higher rates of maternal death during labor and childbirth as compared to the general Kenyan population. Although research indicates that women in Kenya have increased access to facility-based birth in recent years, a small percentage still give birth outside of the health facility due to access challenges and poor maternal health service quality. Most studies assessing facility-based births have focused on the sociodemographi

Health Care-Associated Infections in Older Adults: Epidemiology and Prevention.

Health care-associated infections (HAIs) are a global public health threat, which disproportionately impact older adults. Host factors including aging-related changes, comorbidities, and geriatric syndromes, such as dementia and frailty, predispose older individuals to infection. The HAI risks from medical interventions such as device use, antibiotic use, and lapses in infection control follow older adults as they transfer among a network of interrelated acute and long-term care facilities. Long-term care facilities are caring for patients with increasingly complex needs, and the home-like com

Association between intimate partner violence and utilization of facility delivery services in Nigeria: a propensity score matching analysis.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been shown to be associated with poor maternal healthcare utilisation and poor pregnancy outcomes. IPV can be seen both as the cause and result of low socioeconomic status and lack of maternal autonomy that can limit women's access to resources and motivation necessary for seeking healthcare during pregnancy. This paper aims to study the relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) and the utilisation of facility delivery services in Nigeria. METHODS: We applied propensity score matching (PSM) approach to examine the relationship between

Environmental health physics-50 years of progress.

Environmental health physics is an interdisciplinary field, involving study of the release, transport, and fate of radioactive material in the environment. Further, it addresses the interaction of humans with radioactive materials within the ambient (outdoor) environment and with the environments associated with modern technology and lifestyles. It also involves both naturally occurring and artificially produced radionuclides with the former generally being by far the highest source of exposure. In fact, doses from naturally occurring radionuclides are increasingly being used as a benchmark fo

Modeling Accessibility of Screening and Treatment Facilities for Older Adults using Transportation Networks.

Increased lifespans and population growth have resulted in an older U.S. society that must reckon with the complex oral health needs that arise as adults age. Understanding accessibility to screening and treatment facilities for older adults is necessary in order to provide them with preventive and restorative services. This study uses an agent-based model to examine the accessibility of screening and treatment facilities via transportation networks for older adults living in the neighborhoods of northern Manhattan, New York City. Older adults are simulated as socioeconomically distinct agents

A Rapid Review of Available Evidence to Inform Indicators for Routine Monitoring and Evaluation of Respectful Maternity Care.

BACKGROUND: Some opportunities to routinely capture and improve respectful maternity care (RMC) during facility-based childbirth include quality improvement (QI) initiatives, community-based monitoring efforts through community score cards (CSC), and performance-based financing (PBF) initiatives. But there is limited guidance on which types of RMC indicators are best suited for inclusion in these initiatives. We sought to provide practical evidence-based recommendations on indicators that may be used for routine measurement of RMC in programs. METHODS: We used a rapid review approach, which i
