BACKGROUND: The recent adoption of China's new national mental health law provides a good opportunity to obtain baseline information about community mental health literacy in the country.
AIM: Assess knowledge and attitudes about mental disorders among residents in Shanghai.
METHODS: A total of 1953 residents aged 15 or above selected from all 19 districts in Shanghai completed two self-report questionnaires - the Mental Health Knowledge Questionnaire (MHKQ) and the Case Assessment Questionnaire (CAQ). MHKQ total scores range from 0 to 20 (higher scores indicate better mental health literacy

INTRODUCTION: Patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) often experience cognitive deficits and require extensive and complex medical care. However, there is minimal literature investigating how SAH impacts health literacy and how this may affect care. Accordingly, we aim to leverage the NIH's All of Us Research Program to assess how SAH relates to health literacy among a large and diverse patient cohort.
METHODS: Using the NIH's All of Us Research Program, respondents with SAH were matched to those without SAH via nearest-neighbor propensity score matching. Only those with SAH prior to sur

Health literacy has a broad range of impacts, including whether and where a person seeks treatment and how well that patient interprets and applies clinical recommendations. Patients with headache may not seek treatment, may fail to disclose even severe pain to their physician, and may not understand or adhere to treatment. Universal precautions can be a helpful initial approach, and information styles can be modified as needed over time. Patients should be asked about headache and explanations about headache causes and treatment should be given in everyday language. The teach-back method can

PURPOSE: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is effective at reducing further cardiac events. However, dropout rates are high, and maintenance of behavioral change post-CR is challenging. Health literacy (HL) may influence self-management of cardiac risk, yet few studies have explored this association. This study aimed to describe HL among CR attendees; first to describe the HL profiles of people commencing CR and second to examine HL changes between program entry and completion.
METHODS: CR attendees in Melbourne, Australia, completed the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) at program admission and

BACKGROUND: The Internet has become a major source of health-related information. In order to provide better health services and health-care education to society, nurses should have acceptable electronic health (eHealth) literacy.
OBJECTIVE: The main aim was to measure eHealth-literacy skills among nursing students of Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital, Nepal.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 152 Bachelor of Science nursing students at the hospital. Data were collected using the self-administered eHealth Literacy Scale. This is an eight-item tool that is assessed

Patient health literacy is associated with self-care and management of chronic diseases, including diabetes. Interventions that address health literacy and aim to improve clinical outcomes have been focused mostly in primary care. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between patient health literacy and diabetic foot amputations in a retrospective cohort analysis in a large orthopaedic practice at an academic medical center. Using data extraction from clinical records, orthopaedic patients who had a diabetic foot amputation or re-amputation in the last 2 years were compared

Health science students will play an important role in helping their patients to assess health information and thus to examine their health literacy level is crucial. We aimed to assess the health literacy (HL) status and its potential association with health behaviours. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 381 students (mean age of 20.68 ± 3.89 years). The HL questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q47) and the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Behaviors (HPLP-II) were used. The overall mean HL score was 36.52 ± 7.73. About 30.2% of students have inadequate or problematic HL. The HPLP-II total score (β = 0.188, 9

INTRODUCTION: Health literacy (HL) can be regarded as a key element of non-pharmaceutical interventions used in emergency responses. The present study aimed to determine the associations of combinations of general HL and COVID-19-related HL with COVID-19 protective behaviors and healthy lifestyle behaviors.
METHODS: A questionnaire survey was conducted from December 2020 to January 2021 among residents in Japanese metropolitan areas. Valid responses were received from 1,443 residents. The levels of HL were categorized into four groups: low level in both HLs (reference), high level in general

BACKGROUND: A person's health literacy determines whether they are able to make appropriate health decisions and are able to follow treatment instructions. This is important because low health literacy is associated with mortality and extra costs to the healthcare system. Our aim was to describe the health literacy levels of British adults using a nationally representative population survey, and show how health literacy levels vary by population characteristics.
METHODS: A population based cross-sectional survey including questions from two domains from the Health Literacy Questionnaire™: 1)

Mental health literacy (MHL) is considered a key concept in dealing with mental illness. It encompasses knowledge about illnesses, risk factors, help-seeking behavior, and attitudes toward mental illness. Shame is also associated with these factors. In this study, a modified German version (MHLS-DE) was developed and tested on an online sample (N=533). The psychometric properties of the MHLS-DE and the role of shame as a mediator of MHL were investigated. The MHLS-DE achieved good reliability (Cronbach's χ=0.846) and structural validity. Gender-modulated mediation effects through shame experie

To promote a health literate K-12 population, this chapter focuses on intersections of Health Literacy (HL), Health Education (HE) and Health Communication (HC) and urges collaborations among professionals from these disciplines as well as with stakeholders who share their interests and concerns. Core definitions and evolutionary highlights of these disciplines are presented, as well as their intersection and promise of impact on student academic and health outcomes. The Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model is used as an example of a framework embraced by education and healt

Rheumatoid arthritis represents a significant and serious global public health burden, and its prevalence is continuously increasing. It is a chronic inflammatory joint disease based on autoimmune and autoinflammatory mechanisms, characterized by variable clinical manifestations and frequent systemic involvement. Due to its progression, comorbidities, and negative impact on quality of life, it poses a significant medical and societal challenge. Therapeutic advances in recent years – including conventional, biological, and targeted synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs – have signific

"Health literacy" refers to an individual's ability to read, understand, and use the information necessary to obtain adequate health care. Because so much health-related information is provided to patients in written form, some degree of health literacy is essential. A review of the international medical and education literature was conducted to identify research on health literacy. Limited health literacy is a widespread problem in both non-industrialized and industrialized nations, and it is mostly related to deficient reading skills. Deficient reading skills are most prevalent among those w

At a rural community health center, 183 adult patients were invited to participate in an unspecified study. In a closed-door session, interested invitees were told the study required taking the Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (TOFHLA). After the purpose of the study was privately disclosed, 70 patients agreed to enroll (38.25 percent acceptance rate). Approximately 15 percent demonstrated literacy/numeracy deficits, scoring in the Inadequate and Marginal Functional Health Literacy ranges. Student's t-test comparison of mean scores suggested patients with literacy/numeracy deficits

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND: Mental health literacy (MHL) is a key target of prevention efforts to help gatekeepers such as teachers and other professionals recognize and respond to mental health problems in young people. To evaluate such mental health prevention initiatives, instruments that capture the multiple components of MHL in a concise and practical way are crucial. However, existing measures often assess only selected aspects of the construct or have not been comprehensively validated. Building on the established conceptualization of MHL, a brief and multidimensional measure suitable for p
