INTRODUCTION: Mining is an industry with diverse, demanding occupational exposures. Understanding the prevalence of chronic health conditions in working miners is an area of active research. Of particular interest is how the health of miners compares to that of workers in other industry sectors with a high proportion of manual labor occupations. By comparing similar industries, we can learn what health conditions may be associated with manual labor and with individual industries. This study analyzes the prevalence of health conditions in miners compared to workers employed in other manual-labo

BACKGROUND: Research with physical therapists reveals high rates of work-related musculoskeletal injuries, especially low back pain, with early career onset. Less focus has been given to upper limb disorders (ULDs) in these professionals, who frequently perform repetitive arm/hand and precision finger motions during work.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to estimate prevalence of body-site-specific upper limb (UL) symptoms and diagnosed ULDs in Irish chartered physical therapists, physiotherapists, and athletic therapists, with adjustment for leisure time injury, and document first onset of speci

In recent decades, hand eczema has been seen more frequently in oral care practices. Hand eczema is a difficult problem, especially since the start of the current COVID-19-pandemic, and can lead to absence due to illness at work. The main trio in the development of eczema is predisposition (atopy), irritation and allergy. Irritative contact dermatitis is caused by damage to the skin barrier. In dentistry, this is often caused by frequent contact with water, soaps, disinfectants and the use of gloves. The cause of allergic contact dermatitis is related to the use of various materials in oral ca

AIMS: Classical guitarists may experience unique occupational health problems due to a constellation of biopsychosocial demands associated with the physical characteristics of the classical guitar, performance techniques, repertoire, and performance practices consistent with the classical music genre. Unfortunately, epidemiologic studies of classical guitarists are limited. The purpose of this study was to examine musculoskeletal and non-musculoskeletal problems in classical guitarists.
METHODS: A sample of 190 classical guitarists completed a web-based survey. The survey assessed demographic

This article aims to review the available literature regarding the link between occupational exposure to pesticides and respiratory symptoms or diseases. Identification of epidemiological studies was performed using PubMed. 41 articles were included, 36 regarding agricultural workers and five regarding industry workers. Among the 15 cross-sectional studies focusing on respiratory symptoms and agricultural pesticide exposure, 12 found significant associations with chronic cough, wheeze, dyspnoea, breathlessness or chest tightness. All four studies on asthma found a relationship with occupationa

Several recent reviews have reported that 'repetitive movements' constitute a risk factor for occupational musculoskeletal disorders in the neck, shoulder and arm regions. More variation in biomechanical exposure is often suggested as an effective intervention in such settings. Since increasing variation using extrinsic methods like job rotation may not always be possible in an industrial context, the intrinsic variability of the motor system may offer an alternative opportunity to increase variation. Motor variability refers to the natural variation in postures, movements and muscle activity

BACKGROUND: Available statistics provide relatively reliable information on the number of occupational injuries, their causes and mechanisms, but less is known about long-term health impact.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A group of workers, who had been referred to a specialist for medico-legal assessment after seeking compensation because of occupational injury, were asked to complete a questionnaire approximately three years (median) after the injury. Perceived health and function was assessed through the Short Form Questionnaire (SF-36) and a 100 mm visual analogue scale for physical and psycholog

The overload of the osteoarticular system resulting from standing and stooping position of the body is the main health problem of dentists. This may cause vertebral pain, symptoms of sciatica and foot valgo-planus. Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome are induced by repeated carpus movements. Frequent numbness associated with the peripheral nerves changes result from using drills by dentists. Menstruation disturbances observed in dental assistants could be related to the increased levels of mercury in serum and urine. Allergy is also a frequent medical problem, particularly allergy to latex. man

Comparable to the confusion encountered in the birth of the machine age is the perplexing reconfiguration of the United States' health care system. Paralleling the advances in medicine have been the divesting mergers and downsizing of industry, coupled with globalization, which have released millions of long-time workers. The labour contingent is changing, with the addition of great numbers of women and immigrant workers, and the manufacturing economy has become one of service and information. Serving the occupational health (OH) needs of such a force have been the professional societies of ph

During the past years in Czechoslovakia some 5000 occupational diseases, intoxications and other occupational health damage was recorded. Per year about one fifth of the affected people were health workers. The authors made an analysis of occupational diseases in the South Moravian region in 1975 to 1990. A total of 1726 occupational diseases of health professionals were recorded. In 91.8% contagious diseases were involved, in 7.4% dermatoses--where the most frequent condition was contact eczema. In 0.5% other occupational diseases were involved such as asthma bronchiale, damage to haematopoie

BACKGROUND: While general leadership competencies exist across the healthcare sector, the specific leadership required for occupational health (OH) has been under-researched to date. Given the current opportunity and challenge for OH to impact productivity in the UK by tackling known issues with work and health, strong and distinctive OH leadership is required.
AIMS: To identify the competencies required for effective leadership in OH and propose a conceptual leadership framework tailored to OH practice.
METHODS: A two-stage process comprising interviews with OH leaders and a consultation ex

BACKGROUND: The history of occupational health on the African continent is important but under-studied.
METHODS: We surveyed key resources related to medical history from the Ancient Egypt through the Ottoman Empire period. For the colonial era, we examined archival records, official reports, and historiographical studies, focusing on key cases from French North Africa, Belgian Congo, Italian East Africa, and British South Africa. To explore occupational health in Africa during the post-colonial period, we supplemented biomedical publications with data from governmental reports and policy doc

The history of occupational medicine has been characterized by ever-widening recognition of hazards, from fires in 1911 to asbestos in the 1960s, to job strain in the 1990s. In this essay, we argue for broadening the recognition further to include low wages. We first review possible mechanisms explaining the effects of wages on health or health behaviors. Mechanisms involve self-esteem, job satisfaction, deprivation, social rank, the "full" price of bad health, patience, and the ability to purchase health-producing goods and services. Second, we discuss empirical studies that rely on large, ty

Trucking has been classified as one of the highest-risk occupations in the United States. Occupational stress is even greater for long-haul truckers who are away from home, family, friends, and other support networks for several days or weeks at a time. Occupational stressors and the mental health of truckers was studied using data collected as part of a large multisite ethno-epidemiological study of trucker networks. Findings from the current study show that truckers face many occupational stressors including constant time pressures, social isolation, disrespectful treatment from others, driv

Occupational dermatosis are frequent among healthcare workers. Irritant hand dermatitis is more common than allergic contact dermatitis. It is enhanced by the exposure to irritants: water, detergents, disinfectants and a history of atopic dermatitis. Natural rubber latex contained in rubber gloves can induce contact urticaria or generalized immediate allergic reactions. Contact eczema can be induced by rubber accelerators such as thiurams, disinfectants (glutaraldehyde, dodecyldimethylammonium). Nurses can become sensitized to handled drugs (antibiotics, propacetamol...). These occupational al

Persons who are homeless with a mental illness constitute a significant portion of the homeless population. They have a myriad of occupational performance problems and are further compromised by systemic and political issues. There is growing evidence that occupational therapy can make a contribution to the health and quality of life of this marginalized, under served population. This paper describes the process and challenges providing occupational therapy services to persons who are homeless with mental health problems, addictions, and serious mental illnesses using the Canadian Model of Occ
