Four decades ago 204 men were selected as adolescents for an interdisciplinary study of health; since then they have been followed biennially. Of the 185 men who remained in the study and in good health until 1964 (age, 42 +/- 1 years), 100 men remained in excellent physical health over the next 11 years, 54 acquired minor problems, and 31 acquired serious chronic illness or died. Of 59 men with the best mental health, assessed from the age of 21 to 46 years, only two became chronically ill or died by the age of 53. Of the 48 men with the worst mental health from the age of 21 to 46, 18 became

Aims: To investigate whether adolescents and young adults with a history of child abuse had more physical health complaints compared to their unexposed peers. We also aimed to estimate associations between different child abuse types with physical health complaints and associations between the number of child abuse types and physical health complaints. Methods: This population-based telephone survey over two waves included 506 adolescents and young adults exposed to child abuse and 504 non-abused peers aged 16-33 years. We applied linear regression analyses to investigate associations between

BACKGROUND: Physical activity has emerged as a distinct area of public health practice. As this field evolved, the need for a professional organization for physical activity practitioners in public health became evident. A collaboration of several existing public health professional organizations formed to address this new area of public health practice. The collaboration laid the foundation to establish a professional organization. National Association of Physical Activity Practitioners in Public Health (NSPAPPH) was launched in April 2006. NSPAPPH accomplishments to date include convening a

INTRODUCTION: The Western lifestyle challenges national defence. Inactivity, obesity, high BP and elevated lipid and glucose levels as well as tobacco use all increase cardiometabolic risk. The present study was thus aimed at investigating the health and physical activity of employees in a military environment, concentrating on comparisons between soldiers and civilians.
METHODS AND DESIGN: A total of 260 employees from 6 brigades were included in the present study. Health status was evaluated with body composition, cardiometabolic risk markers from laboratory samples and a questionnaire conc

Physical literacy has received increased research attention over the last decade focusing on the unification of the definition, measurement, and application, including in school and health-based contexts. In 2019, Cairney et al. released a model positioning physical literacy holistically as a primary determinant of health and disease, mediated by physical activity (PA), the physiological and psychological adaptations associated with PA, and the individual and social/environmental/contextual factors or conditions that impact PA-related behaviour, which had a significant impact on physical liter

BACKGROUND: Adults with Down syndrome have an increased risk of aging-related physical and mental health conditions and experience them at an earlier age than the general population. There is a need to investigate modifiable lifestyle factors that may reduce risk for these conditions.
METHOD: The present study investigated the associations between physical activity (i.e., sedentary behavior and moderate-to-vigorous activity) assessed via accelerometer across 7 days and caregiver-reported physical and mental health of 66 non-demented middle-aged adults with Down Syndrome aged 25-55 years (52%

This research study assessed the extent to which non-physical violence is a risk factor for physical violence against workers in health care settings. More than 600 nursing staff, other clinical providers, and non-clinical staff in two health care settings completed a cross-sectional survey. For the preceding 12-month period, 72.8% of workers reported at least one incident of non-physical violence and 21.3% reported at least one incident of physical violence. Workers who had experienced non-physical violence were 7.17 times more likely to experience physical violence than those who had not. Bo

AIM: To review the evidence on nurses' health systematically.
BACKGROUND: Nurses are one of the most important resources of a health system. They are subjected to biological, socio-economic, cultural and health system factors that determine their health. Although mental and physical health problems seem to prevail among nurses, literature is often contradictory. The literature on health styles, health behaviours and self perceived health of nurses is also unclear.
DESIGN: Systematic review of experimental and observational studies on nurses' health.
METHODS: Forty-three databases searched.

Veterans who have been deployed to combat often have complex medical histories including some combination of traumatic brain injury (TBI); mental health problems; and other chronic, medically unexplained symptoms (i.e., chronic multisymptom illness [CMI] clusters). How these multiple pathologies relate to functional health is unclear. In the current study, 120 Veterans (across multiple combat cohorts) underwent comprehensive clinical evaluations and completed self-report assessments of mental health symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-2 [PHQ-2], PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version [PCL-C]) and

BACKGROUND: While a large body of literature has demonstrated an association between physical health problems and psychiatric ones, the extent to which one is causally linked to the other remains difficult to estimate. This quasi-experimental study seeks to (i) estimate causal effects of an acute negative health event (health shock) on mental health and (ii) examine the role of debt and disability as potential mediators.
METHODS: The study design employs exogenous injuries in bus accidents together with a matching procedure to simulate a random exposure to physical health shock. The study was

1. For caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease (AD), each day holds unexpected challenges and losses of personal control. Both physical and emotional health are at risk for caregivers of persons with AD. 2. Depression is a problem for caregivers, whether the spouse with AD remains in the home or has been transferred to a nursing home. 3. It is important for clinicians to advise caregivers that depression is a treatable disorder. When a caregiver complains of sleep problems, a red flag for depression should go up.

BACKGROUND: Personality traits are reported to be associated with a variety of medical comorbidities. Correlational studies report an association between 'bearing grudges' and medical conditions. We hypothesize persons reporting "bearing grudges for years" would be more likely to have medical comorbidities and test this hypothesis in an epidemiological sample.
METHODS: The National Comorbidity Survey Replication is a probability sample of the US population designed to constitute a nationally representative sample (N = 9,882). Associations were measured in odds ratios (95% CI) and adjusted usi

Research on promoting physical activity (PA) primarily revolves around two key concepts: physical fitness (PF), defined as a set of measurable physical capacities (strength, speed, endurance and coordination), and physical literacy (PL), a multidimensional construct encompassing physical, psychological, social and cognitive dimensions that support lifelong engagement in PA. While both contribute to health outcomes, they are grounded in distinct conceptual paradigms: PF is typically approached from a biophysical and outcome-oriented perspective, focusing on measurable capacities, whereas PL ado

With over 5 million attributed deaths per year, physical inactivity is a major global public health issue. Although the importance of physical activity is well recognized within the scope of obesity and cardiometabolic disease prevention and control, its broader benefits for the health of individuals and societies are yet to be fully harnessed. Furthermore, the role of active leisure, active transport and active labor-primary domains of physical activity-in supporting or hindering social and health equity has been largely overlooked. Here we (1) used a health equity lens to describe global dom

The interrelationships between physical illnesses and mental disorders are diverse and complex. People with severe mental illness, particularly those with psychotic and affective disorders as well as pronounced personality disorders (serious/severe mental illness, SMI), have an increased risk of mortality compared to the general population as well as a higher prevalence of numerous somatic comorbidities. In addition to disease-related factors, explanation approaches for this also relate to the healthcare system. In routine psychiatric and psychotherapeutic care it is very important to keep an

OBJECTIVES: Within current research, little is known about the long-term outcomes of craniosynostosis. A priority-setting exercise by UK charity Headlines Craniofacial Support identified 2 key questions in this area: (1) What are the long-term physical and psychological effects for individuals with syndromic and non-syndromic craniosynostosis? and (2) Are individuals with craniosynostosis likely to suffer from mental health difficulties, or are they more resilient? The aim of the current study was to conduct an initial investigation of these priority questions.
METHODS: A comprehensive UK-wid

To examine both mental and physical health profiles of children diagnosed as maltreated in the community, we studied diagnoses in the electronic health records (EHRs) of youth assigned maltreatment-related diagnoses (N = 406) and well-matched youth without a maltreatment-related diagnosis (N = 406) during a four-year period in a large healthcare system that covers eight hospitals and over 40 clinics. Data extracted automatically from the EHRs was supplemented by manual chart review. The odds of the maltreated group being assigned a code for mental illness was 2.69 times higher than the odds fo
