BACKGROUND: As a result of improvements in cancer screening, treatment, and supportive care, nearly two-thirds of individuals diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC) live for 5 years after diagnosis. An ever-increasing population of CRC survivors creates a need for effective survivorship care to help manage and mitigate the impact of CRC and its treatment. Personal health records (PHRs) and survivorship care plans provide a means of supporting the long-term care of cancer survivors.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to characterize the usefulness of a CRC PHR and survivorship care plan a

BackgroundData science, rooted in computer science, statistics, and information science is advancing healthcare research by unlocking "insights" from big data to discover knowledge about patient experiences and answer previously unanswerable questions. The comparatively limited engagement of Canadian nurse researchers in this field, relative to counterparts in other jurisdictions (e.g., United States) served as a key impetus for initiating this data science study.PurposeTo investigate homecare electronic health records (EHRs) of "persons with ALS" (PALS) disease and identify care-related facto

CONTEXT/OBJECTIVE: Although personal health record (PHR) portals are designed for patients, healthcare providers are a key influence in how patients use their features and realize benefits from them. A few studies have examined provider attitudes toward PHR portals, but none have focused on those who care for individuals with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI/D). We characterize SCI/D provider perspectives of PHR portals, including perceived advantages and disadvantages of PHR portal use in SCI/D care.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional; semi-structured interviews.
SETTING: Spinal Cord Injury (SC

BACKGROUND: Carriers of BRCA1 and BRCA2 pathogenic variants are at elevated risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers. To mitigate ovarian cancer risk, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO) is commonly recommended for unaffected carriers and those with personal breast cancer history. Assessing BSO's long-term health outcomes in carriers with previous breast cancer history is essential. This study aims to examine the association between BSO and long-term health outcomes in individuals carrying pathogenic variants in BRCA1 and BRCA2 and with personal history of breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a novel preliminary prediction model (FALLPREDICT) that predicts the risk of falls in patients who have undergone a lower limb amputation (LLA) during the 12 months following their first definitive lower limb prosthesis (LLP) prescription. The model is designed for patients who have undergone an initial transtibial (TT) or transfemoral (TF) amputation due to sequelae of diabetes and/or peripheral artery disease. The overall goal of this research is to identify individuals at relatively increased risk of falls to help inform targeted fall prevention strategies.

BACKGROUND: Personal health record systems (PHRs) have been introduced to support patient empowerment by giving individuals direct access to their personal health information and other key health system resources. MyHealthNB is a province-wide PHR in New Brunswick, Canada, that allows residents to view laboratory results, medication lists, immunization records, imaging reports, and a range of digital health resources. As PHRs continue to expand, it is essential to understand how PHRs like MyHealthNB impact outcomes related to patient empowerment.
OBJECTIVE: This study uses MyHealthNB as a cas

BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction (MI) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although postsurgical cardiac interventions have improved survival rates, effective management during recovery remains challenging. Traditional informational support systems often provide generic guidance that does not account for individualized medical histories or psychosocial factors. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI)-based large language models (LLM) tools have emerged as promising interventions to deliver personalized health information to post-MI patients.
OBJECTIVE: We aim to explo

BACKGROUND: Depression is a heterogenous condition, with high societal and economic costs. Response to available treatments is varied, often trial-and-error, raising the need for personalization. Previous studies demonstrated success in predicting treatment outcomes for patients in psychiatric settings diagnosed with major depressive disorder, but have not done so in the general practice setting. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study analyzed electronic health records (EHRs) from the UK’s National Health Service, where depressive symptoms were recorded at two time points using the Patient Heal

BACKGROUND: Research into mobile health record apps has focused on narrow outcomes, such as medication adherence for persons experiencing chronic conditions. However, no review has examined their use in the context of social exclusion. Persons experiencing social exclusion (PESE) face complex health needs, limited healthcare access, and increased exposure to traumatic life experiences. It is imperative to consider a trauma-informed and integrated care approaches when developing an app for them, and they should be involved as key stakeholders to ensure equitable care. This review examined these

Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which is a common cause of death in Zambia. Data on hypertension prevalence in Zambia are scarce and limited to specific geographic areas and/or populations. We measured hypertension prevalence among persons living with HIV (PLHIV) in Zambia using a national electronic health record (EHR) system. We did a cross-sectional study of hypertension prevalence among PLHIV aged ≥18 years during 2021. Data were extracted from the SmartCare EHR, which covers ~90% of PLHIV on treatment in Zambia. PLHIV with ≥2 clinical visits in 2021 were in

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Electronic health record (EHR) tools are widely used to influence prescribing behaviors. However, the application of EHR tools to deprescribing in older adults, particularly persons living with dementia, is understudied, despite the potential to ameliorate cognitive decline by targeting medications like benzodiazepines and anticholinergics. We explored the design and implementation of EHR-based tools for deprescribing using a multi-phase mixed-methods approach.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of Gaucher disease (GD) allows for disease-specific treatment before significant symptoms arise, preventing/delaying onset of complications. Yet, many endure years-long diagnostic odysseys. We report the development of a machine learning algorithm to identify patients with GD from electronic health records.
METHODS: We utilized Optum's de-identified Integrated Claims-Clinical dataset (2007-2019) for feature engineering and algorithm training/testing, based on clinical characteristics of GD. Two algorithms were selected: one based on age of feature occurrence (age-b
